4-0 out of 5 stars A nice comprehensive travel aid
This is a reasonably comprehensive travel guide to Turkey. All regions of the country are well covered, with lots of good information on local sites and amenities. It is small enough for travel and is up-to-date. It also includes good basic maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lavishly Illustrated
DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides are perfect for your next vacation or they can be illustrated journeys into new worlds you wish you could visit. These guides help me to understand the world and the 1,200 photographs, illustrations and maps in the Eyewitness Turkey Guide are stunning in beauty. I loved the two page spread of the Library of Celsus (one of the most famous Roman sites in Turkey) that is still standing after an earthquake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious photo feast for your eyes, makes you want to go!
I'm a fan of DK publications in general, and their style is well suited for these 'big picture' Eyewitness travel guides. The maps, photos, illustrations and contexts excel at giving you the bird's eye view of what is outstanding in Turkey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bundle with Party London and Paris
What a great guide. Rick Steve's told me so many chill, off the beaten path things to do in London and then I picked up my Party London & Paris guidebook and hand the most fun and social days and nights. What a great combination of books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rick Knows London
Rick Steves has never directed me to a bad hotel or a bad meal.He protects his readers from overpriced tourist traps.A deep knowledge of the areas he visits and much time spent talking with the locals are what makes his books, in my opinion, among the best travel guides one can find.He knows where Londoners go when they want good food and where you can find a hotel that is quiet (by British standards), clean, and affordable (again, by British standards). His suggested museum tours and maps of the major London museums are another major point in his favor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I've been highly satisfied with the Eyewitness Travel Guide series, and this Egypt edition does not disappoint.Maps are clear and helpful, photos help to explain all of the rich history and culture of Egypt. We brought the Lonely Planet Egypt book with us as well, but we found the Eyewitness Travel Guide to be clearer and simpler to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice travel guide
One star off is because this book is a little bit thick for travel, some of contents can be removed to make a pefect travel guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why pay for a Tour Guide, Just Buy the Book
I used the 2005 edition for a New York trip in May 2005 and it was SOOOO helpful. We went everywhere with this book and it really broke down the significance and history of what we were looking at. Take it on the subway and by taxi and see New York on your own. I even learned the subway system with the book after two days of riding. I wish we had more time on the trip! I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sidekick
The NYC Eyewitness Travel Guide is easy to use.I wanted a book that wasn't too bulky but provided the essential info. & pictures of nyc and I found that this was the perfect book for me. It provides tons of pictures and highlights & history on each site.It also contains detailed maps and suggestions on where to stay and eat and the city's entertainment choices (plays, sports games, surrounding areas).I toted the book with me during my week stay in NYC and found myself constantly referencing it.I would recommend this book to anyone traveling to NYC. ... Editorial Review

Too bad the essence of Rome can't be bottled and exported to a corner store near you. If it could, you could pick up a weekend's worth of Rome along with your pint of milk and Snickers bar, and you'd probably never get to repainting the stairs, doing the laundry, or watching that new video release. Instead you'd be gawking at St. Peter's, ogling the Temple of Vesta, devouring saltimbocca in a trattoria, and sipping Sangiovese at a wine bar. You might not even Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent travel book
I recently visited Rome on a cultural trip with my school. This book really did an excellent job of letting me and my group know what to see and about as much information about the sites that we could have taken. While it gives a good overview of the sites, and gives a more in depth analysis of some of the bigger sites, it is not good for thorough study of the city. However, for 95% of the people purchasing such a book, this will not be a problem.I would really recommend this book to anyone who is going to Rome, or just wants to know a little bit more about the sites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well used and referenced!
We just returned from Rome and I can honestly say this book was worth every cent. The map in the back is very detailed, much more so than other books and hotel maps. The museum diagrams and photos were also very useful. The back flap of the cover works as a fantastic and useful bookmark. Good phrases and pronunciations, good symbols, metro and bus information was very helpful, and the photos were excellent. You see tourists of every corner of the world carrying this book. Only negative is that there wasn't information on how organized tours really aren't worth the money, unlike I found in a Rick Steves book after the fact. (By the way - if you are going to Rome, avoid almost every organized tour as they rush you through and you don't get to see everything - especially at the Vatican). I will buy from the same publisher next time I travel!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for visual kinda guys and gals.
Pro:I am a visual kind of guy and 3D cross section pictures and diagrams helps a lot.Nice colorful pictures and nice recommended neighborhood walks. At home, it also serves as a nice coffee table book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tries to do too much...
China is such a massive country with a rich culture that it is a formidable task to really explore it in one book, even if it is very thick! I used this during a 2 week trip to Eastern China and found that many of the sights that we really enjoyed and seemed to attract a fair amount of tourists were really shafted in this guide book. Maps of the subway system was useful to have, but the stations themselves are very well marked. Really didn't use this as much as I have used my LP books on trips in the past.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hope it's good!
Appears to be chuck full of info. However, won't know the accuracy until I use it next month.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I like this book fairly well. It's got all kinds of information in it, which actually may be hard to wade through if you know which island you're going to, and you have to pass over the other island sections.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...
If you buy this, don't bother buying Frommer's Hawaii From $80 A Day. Most of it is word for word.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is it current information?
I recently returned from Maui and used Frommer's 2005 along with another popular 2005 edition as a guide. Both provided current accurate information on lodging and activities and the other guide provided consistently accurate information on restaurants but I was surprised by the amount of either out of date or erroneous restaurant information in the Frommer's book.On one occasion we drove across the island for lunch at a recommended restaurant only to find out they are not open for lunch on any day.We went to another restaurant for dinner partly because of a dessert that Frommer's raved about. When we tried to order the dessert our waiter informed us they had not served that dessert in years. On another occasion we selected a restaurant based on a few specific dishes mentioned in Frommer's.When we arrived we did not find any of the items that interested us from the Frommer's guide on the menu.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Italy
This is the 3rd edition of Lonely Planet Italy that I've purchased in the past 6 years. They seem to get better with each new edition.I hightly recommend it for anyone traveling to this beautiful country!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.
Before embarking on a 2 month trip to Italy a friend let me borrow Rick Steve's guide and said that it was better. I was skeptical but took the book anyway figuring it might come in handy on such a long trip. She was right. Rick Steve's organizes information in a much clearer and more intuitive way. This comes in handy when you're standing in a busy square, you haven't eaten all day and everything you've tried so far has been a jip and you just want someone to tell you where you can find a good deal. Flipping through Lonely Planet you might think you've been handed a manual on how to overhaul an engine - overloaded with information poorly organized. Rick Steve's book on the other hand is a breath of fresh air or, to put it more tritely, a helping hand. Not to mention that his guides have a personal touch and some of Rick Steve's own character sewn into them. After some time you really get the sense that he's there with you, helping you along (- now isn't that sweet!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Experience from living in rome and using the book
I've been living in Rome for about a month and a half now and I would consider the LP book average relative to other books I've seen. Most of the places to sleep and eat are overly expensive. I don't know about the average traveler, but as a college student backpacking through Europe, I hoped to find meals that were maybe at max $25 (which you can totally find if you're smart about it).

1-0 out of 5 stars Not practical for serious travel
I bought this book before moving to India, hoping it would make traveling in the country easier. I was disappointed. There is no practical information in this book. Train times, bus fares, budget hotels, and more useful information is completely ignored. The only plus to the book is sometimes helpful information is given on art history and monument history, but overall I would only recommend the Lonely Planet guide for those looking to really see and experience India.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than Frommers, Lonely Planet, etc
A travel buddy recommended this for our upcoming trip to Japan this fall and I was very pleased with the content and layout. It's well worth the $16 investment ... lots of interesting cultural factoids and clear pictures ... plus the usual list of hotels, shops and restaurants. Will update this review when I get back from Tokyo.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start to plan your trip to Japan
My wife and I enjoy to travel and we have been to many places and we have used the DK Eyewitness Guides a number of times (see my homepage). We bought the Japan guide to start planning our trip to Japan in May 2005 and we found the guidebook useful (as usual). We used it to find out where to buy tickets for a sumo match in Tokyo, we used it to navigate around Tokyo, we used it when we came to a restaurant in Kyoto where the two old people behind the counter didn't speak any English etc. We also found it very useful when we went to the castle at Himeji and found out that there was no guided tours in English. The book has lots of pratical information in my opinion or maybe it is just me that are getting used to this style in guidebooks. I do find the DK Eyewitness guides to be far more interesting that e.g. Lonely Planet, Frommer's etc

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Guide to Japan
This is a great and fascinating guide to Japan. Every page is full of captivating illustrations and interesting information on arts, culture and history around Japan. However, although this is an excellent book to look through and read before going to Japan it is not advised to take this book and this book alone on a trip to Japan. The information on accomadation, restaurants and language is rather vague and sketchy therefore it is best to get a more detailed travel guide on such matters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a lucky book.
My friend said he has loaned this book to six people, all of whom have returned from Costa Rica, ecstatic and safe. This book is good luck... I said write to the author to tell him, and he said, "No, this is a really popular book, he gets hundreds of emails every week."I thought I'd try anyway.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated, sorely lacking, get Tico Times in-country
I bought this book for my Costa Rica trip (8 weeks w/ a class, 3 weeks w/o), and replaced it within the first week. Most of the hotels are priced above what is listed, if they even exist anymore. Same with the restaurants. Also, LP over-emphasized many extreme tourist hotspots without giving enough info about smaller towns (don't miss Cauhita!), lesser-known forests (check out the Children's Eternal Rainforest), getting around by bus, super-budget hotels or border crossings. My advice: wait until you get into Costa Rica, then get the Tico Times guidebook, updated EVERY YEAR, written by the local english newspaper. It's easy to find and so much more relevant, with maps of every town, bus schedules, local festivals (where and when), border information, updated hotel + restaurant info, and how to find the information you can't find anywhere else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Least helpful travel book I've ever used
I bought this book before a trip to Costa Rica, based on the "Lonely Planet" name alone.Lonely Planet usually publishes the best travel books, but not in this case.We found that the directions to many of the establishments were incorrect, as were the descriptions. Some of the locals even pointed out parts of the book that were blatantly incorrect, such as certain restaurants or bars that were in a different part of town than stated in the book. This particular book could have used a better fact-checker.I will not be taking it with me on my next trip to Costa Rica. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have"
The collaborative effort of travel experts Virginia Maxwell, Mary Fitzpatrick, Siona Jenkins, and Anthony Sattin, Egypt is now in its newly updated and expanded eighth edition as the author-researched, traveler-tested guide from Lonely Planet to experiencing the wonder of the Land of the Pharaohs, whether on a business or pleasure trip. Black-and-white and color maps and photographs illustrate this information-packed guide to key locations in Cairo, the Nile Valley, the Western Desert, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea Coast, and much more. History, hours and admission costs of landmarks, a handful of useful words, and a crash-course in adapting to unfamiliarities of Egyptian culture are among the many useful features that make the 8th edition of Egypt a "must-have".

Although my trip is still in the planning stages - leave in 2 months - this book has been a real help.I'm learning about Egyptian customs, how to travel in a Muslim nation without undue problems and how to take their beliefs and customs into account.Hopefully this will make me not only a better guest in their country, but a better ambassador for my country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the Trip a Good One
I have found Lonely Planet Egypt to be just what I wanted as I plan a long visit there next winter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Devoted fan of Rough Guides
I should begin by saying that I traveled around India with the fourth edition of the Rough Guide.Though I cannot comment on how updates and revisions may effect the utility of this particular version, I feel quite confident in recommending the Rough Guide over any other guidebook in the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anotherbeautiful, classy, picture journey!
This is another portable, soft cover, coffee-table book with the same high standards as the one on the the Greek islands! It is beautifully crafted, with exquisite pictures, maps and diagrams of ancient buildings and modern towns. The book takes you on a cultural journey through Greece and its history. If you haven't visited Greece, it's a motivator. If you have, it brings back wonderful memories. This book is a broad sweep, you will need supplemental information, but it is unique in providing a visual overview of a beautiful and enchanting land! It is particularly nice that with the exception of the cultural history part, this book is basically not redundant with the Island book, covering the mainland as the title indicates.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview, but you'll need a more detailed guide
The colorful photos and diagrams found in the DK travel books are a big plus for some and a major detraction for others. Personally I think this is a great book to use while making preliminary travel plans because it's very difficult to decide where to go if you can't see pictures of it first. Then once you narrow down your choices you'll want a more comprehensive travel guide, such as the Lonely Planet guides, which contain better maps, travel information, hotels, etc, but which have very few photos. I'm holding off on giving this book 5 stars because it lacks that kind of detail. However, I still pull it off my shelf frequently when I want to look up someplace on the Greek mainland I have not visited before.

2-0 out of 5 stars love the photos but it needs more maps
On a 10-day driving trip around mainland Greece this guide proved a disappointment. There aren't enough city maps so you need to buy a Lonely Planet guide as well.I love the DK guides to London and Paris where the neighborhoods and sights are so intricate that the DK diagrams and walking tours are immensely helpful. The restaurant recommendations turned out to be rather poor from the DK guide.Frommer's and Lonely Planet were a lot more reliable.
