4-0 out of 5 stars A Nature Tour of Puerto Rico
This is a strong guide for active, nature-loving travellers but also includes information on Internet cafes, bicycle rentals, and the bus system in San Juan.We especially appreciated the list of unusual accommodations. Our favorite was Casa Cubuy on the south side of El Yunque. We had a lovely and memorable stay at this guest house thanks to a friendly host, interesting guests, and stunning views of the rain forest.Other accommodations we enjoyed included Hotel Belgica in Ponce and Villa Cofresi, an affordable resort in Rincon. The book also includes detailed information on the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in San Juan, live music spots, and the Arecibo Observatory. The volume shortchanges the striking Rio Camuy Cave Park and lists Old San Juan attractions in a confusing order, but it has interesting extras, such as the blurb about the curious Boiling Nuclear Superheater in Rincon and an explanation of a local pirate, Roberto Cofresi. The concise road maps helped us navigate smaller highways while the hiking maps for the Guanica Forest Reserve and El Yunque helped us guestimate the time needed for an adequate visit. We were especially glad we didn't miss the Bahia Fosforescente (Phosphorescent Bay). The tabs along the edge of the book (south coast, etc.), made for particularly quick reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really a new edition
We were fairly disappointed with this book. True, although the information was a bit old (and some incorrect), it was satisfactory. But we had used Adventure Guide to Puerto Rico by Harry S. Pariser and this was supposed to be a new edition. However, much of the information that made the other book so enjoyable was missing. We did discover that Harry S. Pariser has a new guidebook, Explore Puerto Rico. We got this guide in time for our trip and used it as well. It was much more compact and had new information in it. It has much better maps and has more information than the previous editions. We found it to be the best guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and descriptive

5-0 out of 5 stars *The* book to bring
I recently rode my motorcycle up the Alaska Highway and space was pretty limited.I photocopied pages out of various other books, but brought this one along intact.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to The Alcan and Beyond.
While the Milepost will give you every pullout and scenic view on the highway, this book is great reading about what to do, and what to see on your way.The information is very accurate and intresting. In this book, when you look up a certain place you end up reading on and on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great travelling companion
I took this book with the AAA guidebook on my trip to Alaska, read the AAA intro on the plane there and read only this book for the rest of the trip. We traveled more than 2,000 miles on the Alaska Highway. This book has beena great companion and guide book wherever we go. I even did some morereading on the plane back home because the writing was interesting. It maybe partly because Alaska is such an interesting subject; but the book isdefinitely fun to read. ... Editorial Review

This easy-to-use book is packed with practical information andenticing facts that make it fun to read: "Sarasota owes itsdevelopment and artistic reputation to, ironically, the circus, whichwintered there beginning in the late 1800s. In contrast to circusraucousness, however, John Ringling was a man swayed by esthetics. Theart he loved had a bit of three-ring showiness to it, nonetheless, asshown by the baroque Italianate palace he built himself inSarasota." A clean, attractive layout makes it easy to find whatyou're looking for within each of the book's six sections, whether itbe suggestions for finding the best food, lodging, kayaking, fishing,or shopping; even driving directions are included. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely guide
Of the three Germany guidebooks I used, this one was the most useful and not only because it covers so many places that the others simply ignored. Although you never get 10% off for showing this book, it has enough sensible advice on how to shave unnecessary expenses off the budget without ever feeling or acting like a cheapskate.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guidebook with great coverage of the former East German regions
Great to see a guidebook on Germany in English by an author who realizes that Germany is more than Berlin, the Rhine, and Bavaria. Not that the well-known areas are neglected but I particularly enjoyed the wide coverage on the former East German regions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Guidebook
Grenada, St Vincent & the Grenadines Adventure Guide has been selected by the Caribbean Tourism Organization as "Best Guidebook to the Caribbean in 2004."

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good guide book
My wife and I took this book with us on a recent "Yankee Clipper" cruise from Windjammer. The book was quite useful with good descriptions (usually a paragraph or two) of the accomodations and restaurants on the islands we visited (Grenada, Mayreau, Bequia, Carricou, Tobago Cays). The authors were very up front about the experiences they DIDN'T like which helped us to avoid frustration. The book also had a nicely organized table of contents which helped navigate the book quickly.5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable and worthwhile guide
This guide is immediate and thorough; it give a host of places and activities that could fulfill even the most bored tourist's desires. The book is salted with the kind of personal experience that makes visiting these islands so special. They take us away from palm beaches, island vistas and rugged emerald mountains and put us in touch with the people who inhabit these beautiful places. From fishermen in Barrouallie to Rastas in the Port Elizabeth market and a botanist in St. George's, we get a sense of the lives that entwine to make up the fabric of these islands. Also, each section begins with a history of the place at hand, so important to understanding the southern Windwards. The authors have produced a journeyman labor, a product of discernment and enterprise tempered with warmth and humor. Those of us who have seen the southern Windwards as a special place for so long have reason to be thankful and relieved.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy Frommers or Fodors instead
I was very disappointed with this guide book.I've bought a lot of guidebooks and have never seen one as general as this one.The information contained in Fodors or Frommers big Carribean books give better coverage to St. Kitts which is what I was interested in learning about.

Editorial Review

Most Trinidad and Tobago guides (and there aren't many) assume you're there to sunbathe. A list of hotels, directions to the best beach, a brief mention of the bird sanctuaries in case you're into them, and that's that.O'Donnell and Pefkaros explore the adventurous side of the islands as well, with hiking and kayaking, mud volcanoes, water falls and swamps. They're beautiful, friendly islands and worth taking the time to get to know them well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor maps
Good information, but lousy, hand drawn maps.Maps were in black and white, minimal detail, pencil drawn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informal approach to travel in TNT
I've been to TNT once for two weeks and am returning again in a few months.I bought the book to refresh my memory and, more importantly, get me excited about my return trip. It's a great read, and as the back cover suggests, it really is written for the traveler who wants to experience more than just sunbathing. However, once you've been to Trindad and Tobago, you discover that they are not your generic Caribbean islands.Visiting Trindad and Tobago is more of a cultural vacation than an island getaway.Once you step foot off the plane at Piarco airport, you'll never want to leave, or you'll want to go back once every year. The two islands are full of charisma, and O'Donnell and Pefkaros do a good job of capturing this spirit in the book. You really cannot be intimidated by the cultures of TNT.From the street vendor corn soup, to crab and dumplings, "down de islands", Maracas, Pigeon Point, Speyside, fried flying fish, Caribs, lorries, maxis, wining, Trinidad's great bar/club scene, the Northern Range, etc. - this book virtually covers all Trinidad and Tobago vacation opportunities and experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with detailed information
Although definitely a part of the Caribbean, these two islands are unique, refusing to conform with the stock Caribbean image created by glossy brochures and travel agencies. They are both generous and Caribbean-spirited, but quite capable of going their own way.Read more
