Great Book but Outdated
Back in the late '90's & early 2000's this book was the best of its kind & rated 5 stars then. Our favorite restaurant of all time "A La Biche au Bois" & our 2nd favorite "Le Petit St. Benoit" were found here & both are still in business.But copyright 1998 (meaning the data was probably gathered in 1997) makes it oudated.What drives this home is that the menu prices are given in French francs.
it stinks
I didn't remember reading this book three years ago until my partner bought a copy.Naturally a restaurant book written several years ago will be somewhat out of date, but this one is laughably out of date.When I tried to find a restaurant in 2000, I was usually disappointed, because it wasn't there. Now even fewer can be found in Zagat's Survey. It was hard to locate them with the maps, because of numerous errors.Not only will you be horribly served by this book, you will waste a lot of time.

Personal recommendations
I've taken this book with me on 2 trips to Paris, & enjoyed every recommendation that we followed from the book. (Actually had to buy the book twice since first copy was lost by a friend on their trip to Paris). It gives you a pretty good description of the environment/background of the restaurant, selects several good dishes worth trying, & lets you know if there's a prix fixe menu. It may be time for an update, but if you want to stay in a budget, you won't find a better guide for eating in Paris unless you have friends that live there. ... Read more

Great Food & Adventure
We travelled to Budapest in July 2003.We only got to use the book 2 times but each was a wonderful experience.We never would have found the restaurants mentioned without the book.We didn't worry so much about the prices quoted, but they were reasonable and the food was wonderful with generous portions.Finding the restaurants and exploring the area was a wonderful adventure and unforgettable experience.It was well worth the money spent.

This book is already outdated.
This book was probably useful 5-6 years ago(1997 edition). Now, it is just too old to be useful.Don't waste your money.I would love to see those prices again, but it is in the past and even Eastern Europe is not that cheap any more.

There are no cheap eats in Waikiki
This book had some wonderful information about how to get cheap food in Hawaii.The only thing is that there is no such thing as "cheap food" in Waikiki.You have to drive out of Waikiki if you wanted cheap food.(Better yet, get a suite with a kitchen and cook your own dinner.)Breakfast is the cheapest meal in Waikiki.

This is the ONLY book you need to find great eats in Italy
Sandra Gustafson's book is absolutely essential if you are not interested in paying overpriced tourist food when you visit Rome, Florence and/or Venice.Like the title, this book covers restaurants in Florence, Rome and Venice.In each city, restaurants are further divided into several city zones.There are maps to each city zone with numbers corresonding restaurants indicated on the map.They are not the most detailed map but good starting point, nevertheless. I have noticed a few mistakes on the map such as the numbers are placed on the wrong side of the street or mistakenly placed on the next street over.It is best to cross reference this book's map either with your hotel or with a different map.Read more

Latest Edition
I wanted to buy this on Amazon and was surprised tosee that the edition is from 1998. I checked into Chronicle books, the publisher, and the most recent edition from March, 2004 is available for $14.95. Why isn't Amazon carrying this most recent edition???? It is an excellent book that I have relied on many times on my trips to Paris.

resting on its laurels
It's been six years since the last edition of this book. I used it in Paris recently and although one could get a sketchy idea of cheap accoms six years later (probably more like eight years given research and publishing lag), I would really like to see this guide updated more often. I love Sandra.No one has put in as much legwork as she in finding smaller spots, (perhaps that are marketed mainly to other Europeans) that are in the middle of everything and are reasonably priced.I have used this book twice, and (GASP) I gave it to my mother to use!Everything worked out splendid.If Sandra says a price and location in her book is as good as it gets, believe her.If some decry that her cheap sleeps are not so cheap anymore, this may have to do with the fact that Europe in general is reaching dollar parity with the U.S.Let the reader blame the tanking U.S. dollar for the fact he can't stay in Paris for 22$ a night anymore.I guess I have reached an age where I do not want glitz, or fashionable place anymore.What has become important is little of what the Irish call 'craic' and some measure of authenticity.When Sandra says the owner is delighful, or a quintessential Frenchman, she aint kidding.And believe me, you will remember the little things of your trip, such as what Sandra can lead you to, then the big things.Use her book without reservation! ... New Food Secrets of Rome

Going to Florence, Rome, or Venice? Like to eat well without breaking the bank? Buy this book. Went on my honeymoon to all three. Brought this book along, and we ate like kings, but paid like paupers. You can't go wrong with any of the restaurant,cafes, etc. suggested. Be aware, however, that the maps are hard to follow for Venice (probably because Venice is such a maze).

If you want a book for food places this is it !!!
My wife and I have used this book in Rome on two occasions and were extremely satisfied both times. I believe there is now a revision appropriately entitled "Great Eats in Italy".Both books cover Rome, Florence, and Venice. The book is fairly accurate about the menus so you know what to expect (where to go or not to go based on your preferences). The meals are not cheap. They are reasonable. I think the author does herself a diservice but using "cheap eats" in the title of the book. Cheap is not relevant with this book. These are very good places to eat at reasonble prices.You can a vacationjust sampling her recommendations. We let other people borrow this book from us when they go to Italy... I bought her other books for Paris, and Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville). She has another one for Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.Keep 'em coming!!! ... Read more

Definitely Worth Looking For!
This book was extremely helpful to my husband and I when we visited Italy in '99 and again in '00.(We also have used her guide to Paris).If you read enough of the profiles of the hotels, you get a better understanding of the author's tastes, preferences, and values, and you can better compare her comments to your own interests. Now a days you can find latest up to date information about hotel prices online rather than these kind of books... Sorry this book has no pictures either...

Buy it and buy it now
I used this book on a trip to Venice and Florence last year and it was invaluable. As the daughter of travel agents, I think I'm pretty travel savvy. But this book helped find some of the most charming hotels I'vestayed in. And true to its title they were cheap. My only complaint:Gustafson has only published a handful of books. I'm planning a trip toBarcelona this spring and without her advice I feel like I'm travelingblindly.

Great guide for the 1st time traveler to Italy
I loved everything about this book.It gave such great detail. Knowing which rooms had great views, closets for storage, and shower curtains were awesome for me and my travel partner to know.The book even goes as far as to say which room you could possibly get fresh flowers from the hotelgardens. We stayed at several of the hotels that were recommed and fell inlove with each one. We loved it, and itcertainly came in handy during ourtravels throughtout Italy. Must Have for any Traveler to Paris
This book is filled with vivid descriptions of many of Paris' less expensive hotels.Sandra includes some pricier gems as well for those who can afford to splurge.But she avoids the chain hotels that don't offerthe character of the smaller Parisian hotels. She describes theaccomodations accurately including furnishings, lighting and room size. Many times she recommends specific rooms along with their canopy beds orterrific views!She warns you when there may be street noise and includesthe nearest metro stops. Terrific resource

Don't buy this book!
This book consists of basically listings of every McDonald's in Florida.It is basically pulled from the phone book and not one bit informative.I expected a listing with descriptions of some cute out of the way places, well certainly not in this book!
