5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Travel Book
After looking at several other travel books, I kept going back to this one.It is full of color and interesting facts.Great ideas of places to stay and comprehensive information on currency and traveling tips. The book makes me more excited about my trip each time I read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great presentation, excellent for planning and reference
This is one of the best travel books I've read. Every page has well laid out and well labeled full color pictures to augment the text. Once you look at this it's hard to go back to a dry, sterile book that's all text with a handful of color pages in the middle. The information here is clear and easy to read. There is cross-referencing everywhere, for example a page that's describing a major attraction will tell you where to go in the book to find hotels in that area. There are listings and descriptions for hotels and restaurants in each area, and general travel tips. The introduction to each area of Italy also has an overview of the history and architecture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Try the recommendations in the book, they are spot on
My wife and I now have over 15 Eyewitness Travel Guides...obviously we like them. There are several reasons, and the Paris guide points these out quite well:
5-0 out of 5 stars A seeing eye
If you are a grown-up and want context for your travels, this series brings it.They figure, reasonably for me, that you already know how to shop and that club-hopping is not the be-all and end-all--and that, if it were, you would probably be able to suss all that out.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Planning
The Eyewitness guides are known for their full color photos which make them an interesting read for armchair travellers. However, they are also known for being a little light on travel information, and this holds true for the Paris edition as well. You get lots of great photos of the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and of the art treasures of the Louvre, so this guide is actually a good one to get in the early stages of planning your trip. The full-color photos will help you to decide which areas and sights you would like to see most. However, when you're ready for more serious information, you'll have to look elsewhere.Perhaps this book would be good for those who are travelling with a package tour, but those who are travelling independently will need to get another guidebook.Basically, if you can only afford one guidebook, then I recommend getting something else, but if you have the cash to buy two or three guidebooks, then you won't regret adding this one to your collection. ... We took a cruise that stopped at 5 islands listed in the book and found the information provided helpful to interpreting the cruise line's descriptions and deciding which land tours to take.We were able to by-pass several expensive tours yet see the major sites on our own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the DK travel guides!
The DK books are my favorite travel guides and even though I've never been to Greece (yet!) I still like to page though the book. The pictures and diagrams are gorgeous and I like how the authors always bring the culture and history of the area into the discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, classy, picture journey!
This is a portable, soft cover, coffee-table book!It is beautifully crafted, with exquisite pictures, maps and diagrams of ancient buildings and modern towns. The book takes you on a cultural journey through Greece and its history. If you haven't visited Greece, it's a motivator. If you have, it brings back wonderful memories. This book is a broad sweep, you will need supplemental information, but it is unique in providing a visual overview of a beautiful and enchanting land! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for a London vacation
I purchased this book 6 weeks before my trip to London - and it was money well spent! Before leaving, I planned my entire vacation using the D&K Travel guide (and tripadvisor dot com for reviews). The map section is excellent and accurate as I used it continually on walking tours as well as when on the buses and tube.I really loved the map section. The maps are broken down into sections of London with arrows at the edges of each map pointing to the page number that the map continues on (depending which direction you are following) - so no struggling with a huge unruly map. There is a handy tube (subway) guide at the back of the book. The book fit nicely into my purse, and this was very important to me as I wanted it with me at all times. Not only did I find the road maps terrific, but also the various overview maps of specific areas (i.e. Covent Garden, Russell Square, Westminster & Whitehall) which had recommended walking tours marked up.The individual attractions diagrams (i.e. Westminster Abbey, British Museum, National Gallery), were excellent too and right on the mark as I used them for planning exhibits to see in advance of the trip.Being a full color guide divided into locations, you'll find information easily and be able to organize a flowing itinerary. The tips section is excellent with bus, telephone, currency and many other important tidbits of info.As for the hotel/B&B selection, I found it limited, but the information accurate as to the accommodations listed. My vacation in London was fabulous and I truly think this book had a big part in my trips success.Almost all of the museums in London are free - enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The One Best Guide to London
The City of London is one of the most fascinating urban areas on the planet. Its remarkable history, from its founding by the Romans and its long years as the center of the British Empire to its vibrant present as a cultural and commercial center provide venues of interest for almost everyone.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and easy-to-use resource
After looking through many other travel guides, mostly copy-dense volumes with only a section or two of color photos, I admit to having been skeptical of the utility of this large, colorful, profusely-illustrated book. Would it really have the in-depth info I wanted? I shouldn't have worried. When my wife and I took a vacation to London this spring, this (along with one or two more specialized guides) was the book we ended up taking with us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro guide
I used two tour books to plan my trip to China: Eyewitness for the general details of the itinerary, and Lonely Planet for the logistical details. The Eyewitness guide has a massive amount of beautiful photographs and illustrations that help give the traveler an idea of the sights he or she can choose from, which is very important--unless you have a year or so to spare, planning a trip to China is as much about choosing what NOT to see as it is choosing what to see. I could also see this being the perfect guide for the more casual traveler; someone in a tour group or someone accompanying a designated "navigator."
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
We travel a lot and find some information books better than others. For China, we would recommend the Eyewitness Travel Guide. It is excellent. Very thorough; great photos; wonderful information and helpful, too!

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice comprehensive travel aid
This is a reasonably comprehensive travel guide to Turkey. All regions of the country are well covered, with lots of good information on local sites and amenities. It is small enough for travel and is up-to-date. It also includes good basic maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lavishly Illustrated
DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides are perfect for your next vacation or they can be illustrated journeys into new worlds you wish you could visit. These guides help me to understand the world and the 1,200 photographs, illustrations and maps in the Eyewitness Turkey Guide are stunning in beauty. I loved the two page spread of the Library of Celsus (one of the most famous Roman sites in Turkey) that is still standing after an earthquake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scrumptious photo feast for your eyes, makes you want to go!
I'm a fan of DK publications in general, and their style is well suited for these 'big picture' Eyewitness travel guides. The maps, photos, illustrations and contexts excel at giving you the bird's eye view of what is outstanding in Turkey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I've been highly satisfied with the Eyewitness Travel Guide series, and this Egypt edition does not disappoint.Maps are clear and helpful, photos help to explain all of the rich history and culture of Egypt. We brought the Lonely Planet Egypt book with us as well, but we found the Eyewitness Travel Guide to be clearer and simpler to use.

    Editorial Review

Too bad the essence of Rome can't be bottled and exported to a corner store near you. If it could, you could pick up a weekend's worth of Rome along with your pint of milk and Snickers bar, and you'd probably never get to repainting the stairs, doing the laundry, or watching that new video release. Instead you'd be gawking at St. Peter's, ogling the Temple of Vesta, devouring saltimbocca in a trattoria, and sipping Sangiovese at a wine bar. You might not even Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent travel book
I recently visited Rome on a cultural trip with my school. This book really did an excellent job of letting me and my group know what to see and about as much information about the sites that we could have taken. While it gives a good overview of the sites, and gives a more in depth analysis of some of the bigger sites, it is not good for thorough study of the city. However, for 95% of the people purchasing such a book, this will not be a problem.I would really recommend this book to anyone who is going to Rome, or just wants to know a little bit more about the sites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well used and referenced!
We just returned from Rome and I can honestly say this book was worth every cent. The map in the back is very detailed, much more so than other books and hotel maps. The museum diagrams and photos were also very useful. The back flap of the cover works as a fantastic and useful bookmark. Good phrases and pronunciations, good symbols, metro and bus information was very helpful, and the photos were excellent. You see tourists of every corner of the world carrying this book. Only negative is that there wasn't information on how organized tours really aren't worth the money, unlike I found in a Rick Steves book after the fact. (By the way - if you are going to Rome, avoid almost every organized tour as they rush you through and you don't get to see everything - especially at the Vatican). I will buy from the same publisher next time I travel!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for visual kinda guys and gals.
Pro:I am a visual kind of guy and 3D cross section pictures and diagrams helps a lot.Nice colorful pictures and nice recommended neighborhood walks. At home, it also serves as a nice coffee table book.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than Frommers, Lonely Planet, etc
A travel buddy recommended this for our upcoming trip to Japan this fall and I was very pleased with the content and layout. It's well worth the $16 investment ... lots of interesting cultural factoids and clear pictures ... plus the usual list of hotels, shops and restaurants. Will update this review when I get back from Tokyo.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start to plan your trip to Japan
My wife and I enjoy to travel and we have been to many places and we have used the DK Eyewitness Guides a number of times (see my homepage). We bought the Japan guide to start planning our trip to Japan in May 2005 and we found the guidebook useful (as usual). We used it to find out where to buy tickets for a sumo match in Tokyo, we used it to navigate around Tokyo, we used it when we came to a restaurant in Kyoto where the two old people behind the counter didn't speak any English etc. We also found it very useful when we went to the castle at Himeji and found out that there was no guided tours in English. The book has lots of pratical information in my opinion or maybe it is just me that are getting used to this style in guidebooks. I do find the DK Eyewitness guides to be far more interesting that e.g. Lonely Planet, Frommer's etc

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Guide to Japan
This is a great and fascinating guide to Japan. Every page is full of captivating illustrations and interesting information on arts, culture and history around Japan. However, although this is an excellent book to look through and read before going to Japan it is not advised to take this book and this book alone on a trip to Japan. The information on accomadation, restaurants and language is rather vague and sketchy therefore it is best to get a more detailed travel guide on such matters. ... Read more

One star off is because this book is a little bit thick for travel, some of contents can be removed to make a pefect travel guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why pay for a Tour Guide, Just Buy the Book
I used the 2005 edition for a New York trip in May 2005 and it was SOOOO helpful. We went everywhere with this book and it really broke down the significance and history of what we were looking at. Take it on the subway and by taxi and see New York on your own. I even learned the subway system with the book after two days of riding. I wish we had more time on the trip! I highly recommend this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not practical for serious travel
I bought this book before moving to India, hoping it would make traveling in the country easier. I was disappointed. There is no practical information in this book. Train times, bus fares, budget hotels, and more useful information is completely ignored. The only plus to the book is sometimes helpful information is given on art history and monument history, but overall I would only recommend the Lonely Planet guide for those looking to really see and experience India.

Before our family trip for 10 days throughout Germany, I purchased a few different travel guides. After having each of them in hand before leaving home, we didn't even put this one in our luggage.I reccommend Daytrips Germany, 6th Edition 1st and then Rick Steves' Germany and Austria 2006. Those 2 books were great for finding tourist sites, great restaurants and hotels that could accomodate 2adults and 2 kids (most hotels don't have rooms with 2 beds!)

As always the eyewitness travelguides are superb. This Germany travelguide meets the expectations i have placed into the exewitness series and is very up-to-date.

I love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for several reasons:color photos, background/history, maps/drawings of destinations, color coded sections, front and back flaps can be used as page markers (plus that's where they put the symbols for the descriptions).

5-0 out of 5 stars Anotherbeautiful, classy, picture journey!
This is another portable, soft cover, coffee-table book with the same high standards as the one on the the Greek islands! It is beautifully crafted, with exquisite pictures, maps and diagrams of ancient buildings and modern towns. The book takes you on a cultural journey through Greece and its history. If you haven't visited Greece, it's a motivator. If you have, it brings back wonderful memories. This book is a broad sweep, you will need supplemental information, but it is unique in providing a visual overview of a beautiful and enchanting land! It is particularly nice that with the exception of the cultural history part, this book is basically not redundant with the Island book, covering the mainland as the title indicates.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview, but you'll need a more detailed guide
The colorful photos and diagrams found in the DK travel books are a big plus for some and a major detraction for others. Personally I think this is a great book to use while making preliminary travel plans because it's very difficult to decide where to go if you can't see pictures of it first. Then once you narrow down your choices you'll want a more comprehensive travel guide, such as the Lonely Planet guides, which contain better maps, travel information, hotels, etc, but which have very few photos. I'm holding off on giving this book 5 stars because it lacks that kind of detail. However, I still pull it off my shelf frequently when I want to look up someplace on the Greek mainland I have not visited before.

2-0 out of 5 stars love the photos but it needs more maps
On a 10-day driving trip around mainland Greece this guide proved a disappointment. There aren't enough city maps so you need to buy a Lonely Planet guide as well.I love the DK guides to London and Paris where the neighborhoods and sights are so intricate that the DK diagrams and walking tours are immensely helpful. The restaurant recommendations turned out to be rather poor from the DK guide.Frommer's and Lonely Planet were a lot more reliable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spain. Eyewitness Travel.
Great book, lots of information of where to go, things to do and
4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EYEWITNESS GUIDES
I have used these guides for my travels in Ireland, London, Scotland, Rome, Florence, Venice, Switzerland, Germany and Amsterdam. These have to be some of the best guides ever.
5-0 out of 5 stars To plan your trip
Eyewitness Guides are beautiful, gorgeously illustrated books on glossy paper that are perfect for planning a trip but not so good for carrying along with you. But they don't need to be! I used the guide to Spain to plan my 5-city itinerary, including a stop in Ronda which I'd never heard of but ended up being one of the highlights of our travels. This guide gives you a general view of the sights to see, with many photos and maps. But especially in a country like Spain, the wise traveler makes his or her first stop the tourist office--there's one in every city and many towns. That's where you get your map, the info on walking tours, a schedule of museum openings and closings, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars These books can't be beat and are top choices for destination-oriented travelers
NEW ZEALAND achieves the same for that country, packing all into a pocket-sized tote which is just easy enough to take along, yet compromises nothing in the amount of detail offered. From driving and walking tours to cultural insights, these books can't be beat and are top choices for destination-oriented travelers wanting visual excitement paired with practical facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Presenting Prague
This is the best travel guide I have ever used.Prague is presented in a way that does justice to its beauty and storied past. The richness and detail of the (mostly) color images of the sites being discussed give the guide a usefulness that I have not found in other guides. It is one of the few travel guides that I will keep in my private library long after my recent trip to Prague and the Czech Republic has ended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for general-purpose tourism
I recently spent nine days in Prague, including a day and a half of a group tour, and about five full days of touring on my own.I found all of the information in the guide to be accurate and up-to-date, and to be at an appropriate level of depth and detail.I was able to prioritize and choose what I wanted to see, and get to everywhere. The information on public transit (metro and trams) was very helpful.I traveled to and through all the primary areas of interest without any additional maps or guidance.Because I went with a group, the hotel was pre-selected (and not one that was in the guide), so I cannot comment on that aspect of the guide.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best guide book you can get
I have traveled the world over, usually I use the lonely plant series. But now that I have used the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Prague I am hooked. This is a fantastic travel guide, you could not ask for anything better. There are clear maps with photos and drawings, so you can find everything. Then for each item it goes into details. For example the charles bridge has a four page spread where is has a drawing of the bridge and then a description about each statue. It is so EASY TO USE, and it has everything you will need. I had this and small map and that was it for a four day trip in Prague. I didn't really need the map as the book has all the maps you need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a trip to Florence
This book was exactly what we needed to help plan our days while in Florence. The map/photos and information is great and really helps to know where stuff is and what to do there. We used it in conjunction with the rain-proof Rough Map to Florence/Sienna. It was a perfect combination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide - ausgezeichnet!
I used this book as my guide travelling around Munich and I can strongly recommended it to others. The layout of the book is clear and logical which makes choosing destinations and getting there easy. The maps in the book are all in full colour, as always in this series, showing roads as well as public transport routes. Countless illustrations enrich the reading - each carefully drawn so as to say more than a thousand words found in other guides. The choice of restaurants, hotels etc were all great picks. I managed to find a couple of real gems of restaurants in the recommended list here. I can assure that speaking from personal experience: you can use this book with complete confidence!
5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide on Munich
If you're planning on spending just a few days in Munich, then this compact little guide will be indispensible in locating the famous beerhalls and tourist sights. The maps are more than adequate and the walking descriptions to each locale are precise and accurate. There is also corresponding material on how to use the U-Bahn in the city and which station to take for each particular site. There is a separate chapter on the beerhalls of the city with a brief ranking system for the nosiest places, the friendliest, the cheapest beer, etc.5-0 out of 5 stars As a resident...
...I can affirm the genuine worth of this book. The maps are convenient, easy to use, and marvelously clear.Furthermore, the organization of the guide is wonderfully helpful in assisting the traveler (or resident, as the case may be) in finding cultural destinations, culinary spots, that may have otherwise been missed.Read more

Liked it alot. The chapter about how they built Venice was very interesting. A must have book if you are going to Venice or the Veneto.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Travel Book
I could not be more happier with the Eyewitness Travel Guide books. Last year my mother and I went to Prague and had the Prague book of the series with us. We relied on this book to guide us through the entire city, and it did. These books are absolutely wonderful. They are so helpful in finding you anything you need! They have detailed plans and maps of the cities, and provide you with information on just about everything! We just recieved the Venice & the veneto and florence & tuscany books. They have so much information about these cities amidst beautiful photographs and maps. You will not be dissappointed if you buy this book, or any other from the series. They are a lifesaver, and a tour guide in writing!
