4-0 out of 5 stars Paradise Found on a Grand canyon Tour
The Grand Canyon Handbook: an Insider's Guide to the Park, was quite helpful.I searched all over the internet for grand canyon tour information, and i must say paradisefoundtours.com was by far the best.I signed up for a grand canyon tour and a hoover dam tour with them. The book and the website went hand in hand.We had a great time!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just a big hole in the ground
The way the books of this series work is that they took a guide for new rangers in Yosemite with the 100 or so most frequently asked questions, and wrote their own answers for each park.So in each book the questions are very similar but the answers might be very different.5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just a big hole in the ground

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sedona Overview
A quick and easy to follow introduction to everything Sedona. The quality of Sedona guidebooks is poor in general. This one stands out. Well worth the money.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sedona Book Review
Fine job, a comprehensive run down of the area highlights. The author did not make it clear that a Golden Eagle National Parks Pass can be used in place of a Red Rocks Pass.I unnecessarily purchased both.

5-0 out of 5 stars help on I75
This is the most fantastic publication I ever came across. Since I bought a 5th wheel trailer along with a Diesel truck, this book helped me tremendeously. Milage can be pin-pointed to truck service centers. Since my truck has only 250 miles between fuel stops. With a 37 ft trailer you cannot visit regular small fuel stations. With I 75 book I can map to truck centers listed in the truckstops of America

About I-75?I assure you I've traveled this route many times and the last time I happened upon this book first. How wonderful! 5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you want (and don't want) to know about I-75
I thought Dave Hunter was nuts when he announced all those years ago he was going to do a book about the Eastern United States' busiest north-south artery:Interstate 75.But he was really onto something. This book gets better year after year, and justifiably more popular as well.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Companion for our recent Visit!!
My husband and I just returned from our trip to Baltimore, and might I say, I don't know what we would have done without this book!We went to attractions recommended by the book, and we were not disappointed.I love the way that the book gives you the kind of information that you need and leaves out the subsidiary parts. The book also had an invaluable map that showed the main streets that we wanted. We chose restaurants based not only on price, and neighborhood, but also the "vibe," that was very well described by the authors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book On The Baltimore Area
THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO BALTIMORE is a great book, even if some of the radio station info is outdated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aunt Wendy is going to move to Baltimore

5-0 out of 5 stars a MUST BUY for Prague travel
This book is dead on.We were in Prague for four days, and this book was an indispensible tool. The bar/club descriptions were honest, straight-forward and written as if by a friend who had been living there for six years.Beyond merely naming a bar, giving an address and some surface description, they go in depth, including what nights to visit which place. The restaurant descriptions were fantastic, and lead us to some of the best (and best priced) meals we had on the trip. The mapping system makes navigation remarkably easy.Get this book, go to Prague, and rest assured you will have a good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars a GREAT Guide
I must say that I'm VERY impressed with this guide for Prague. I've been a frequent visitor to the city for the past couple of years, and am FINALLY moving there this summer. This guidebook is great because it provides inside information for visitors like me-- people who don't want to look like tourists and want to take in the best of local culture and nightlife-- people who would rather try and speak even a little of the local language czech than flock to English speaking tourist traps.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely invaluable and the best by far of any guide we used
We have just returned from a trip to Prague and Vienna. This guide to Prague was absolutely invaluable and the best by far of any guide we used. Visiting Vienna afterwards, we sorely wished that they had written one on that city, too; the other travel resources we used were not nearly as complete or informative as your guide had been for Prague. We look forward to the publication of additional Avant guides in the future! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars slight pause before purchase
i've got a sister who's lived in LA for more than 6 years.i'm looking for a guide to help heighten her appreciation for the place and help her uncover some yet undiscovered treasures.this book appealed on the surface and many of the reviews were positive.sad to say, upon reading some excerpts, i found the book to be crass, bawdy and distasteful, given the prospective recipient.
5-0 out of 5 stars ...BEST LA TRAVELOGUE I'VE EVER READ!
Okay, first off, I'm from Texas (urban, not rural, ahem), and have had this incredibly entertaining book sitting in my "library" (i.e. bathroom magazine rack) for years - a great read. Well, I'm finally in LA, and all I can say is that the recommended trip to the otherworldly Lynchian (as in David) Clifton's Cafeteria in scenic downtown LA is worth 3 times the price of this book - what an amazingly freakish time warp! And the food was actually edible (surprise, surprise); well, mine anyway, my girlfriend bypassed the roast beef and just ate the mashed potatoes - smart gal. I also bought all the standard LA guide books before my trip, and they're okay, and recommended (you know, the old reliables), but for those true retro-urban adventurer types, this is the one to buy...I only wish they had a new updated edition, as I'm sure these hard-core La-La-Landers have unearthed some new treasures since 1997 (the only place I would skip though, is "Trader Vics" in Beverly Hills, a place I had wanted to visit for years, a massive disappointment - rude, rude, rude management - go to "The Tiki Ti" instead...but watch those drinks, to say they're strong is a VAST understatement - Hoo-Ha!) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (even if you never plan on going to Los Angeles...really, it's that entertaining)!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very hard to read!
I bought this book from Amazon and wound up returning it for a credit because it was totally unreadable. The very tiny, bold-faced type is, on most of the pages, set against garish green and pink blotches of color, making it a migraine-inducing read. It's probably not a bad book, but the way it is laid out makes it more of a headache than it's worth. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, but flawed
I too purchased the original 'Movie Lover's Guide to Hollywood' (and 'New York') and thumbed through them until the bindings gave way. Never before or since have so many locations been compiled into one good book. The writing style makes you feel as if you're with a good friend on your own private tour, and without a doubt it's the most comprehensive guide around. I was thrilled to see an updated version was released.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Updated Version Of One Of My Favorites
In the late '80's, I went into Dutton's in Manhattan and found this book as well as its companion piece: New York: The Movie Lover's Guide. Both books got quite a workout on my travels to both coasts and showed a lot of wear including crayon marks from the kids. I often wished I had extra copies of both to pass on to my movie crazy friends. Fast forward 20 years. The kids are out of the house and a new and improved version of both books are available at the bookstore. What makes this book particularly endearing is that it doesn't focus on a particular era of film making/celebrity......it covers it all! Whether you are interested in knowing where Laurel and Hardy filmed THE MUSIC BOX or where Howard Hughes maintained his LA offices, it's all here. This is a great book for the merely curious or the die hard movie fanatic and definitely a must-have for the armchair traveler. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good as an accessory, but not main guide
As someone who had never visited Pittsburgh, I needed a comprehensive get-around guide that I could carry with me. Unfortunately, this was the only one I could find in my bookstore at short notice, and it wasn't very helpful for my (student) needs.
5-0 out of 5 stars information you don't find elsewhere
With summer travel in full swing, I found this guidebook pointed out several things about Pittsburgh I hadn't known -- namely, the great architecture and kids-oriented activities (amusement parks, science center, museums just to name a few).I'd once read an article in an airline magazine by one of the authors, and it piqued my curiosity to take a closer look at Pittsburgh.Glad I did. Also, I had no idea there were so many golf courses in Western Pa.I know people who will use that chapter more than myself, but still....lots of new facts learned about a city that has progressed over many decades.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Useful
I used this book to plan a recent trip to Pittsburgh and was generally pleased.I especially liked the information on local restaurants-- it was very detailed, and they took care to point out restaurants with vegetarian options, which I found helpful. However, some of the other recommendations were way off.The authors fall all over themselves praising Pittsburgh's Strip District, which is mildly interesting but also dirty (and it gives off a faintly creepy vibe)-- trust me, we found much better shopping/dining areas on our own. More maps would also help a lot! However, given that there are very few Pittsburgh travel guides on the market, I would recommend this book over the others that I glanced through (CitySmart, etc.)It also seems like it might be useful to people who are moving to Pittsburgh-- it has lots of information on childcare, healthcare, real estate, etc. which is basically useless to the common traveler but would probably help the new Pittsburgh resident. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre guidebook.Better than nothing, but poorly done.
My family just got back from South Dakota, where we used this book.I can't begin to tell you how far this book falls short.Want info. on hiking the Badlands? Forget it.Want to know about activities and food in Rapid City? You're pretty much out of luck.5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A COMPANION!
This book was absolutely amazing! Everything we wanted to do and everything we didn't know we wanted to do was EASY TO FIND. I spent a bit of time marking the attractions we wanted to see and the routes we wanted to take and NOT ONCE did we get lost. I recommend the trip. However, I recommend it more with this book as a travel companion. For our next trip we plan on touring the South East, don't think I haven't looked to the Insiders' Guide books to help. Have a great time!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book for vacation planning!
We bought this book only because the Moon Handbook was unavailable. We hoped to use this as a vacation planner. The book appears to have lots of information, but for us, interested in tent camping and hiking, with some in-town activities, the information was largely irrelevant.Things worth dwelling on--such as Spearfish Canyon--are mentioned with much less emphasis than the exhaustive coverage of shopping facilities, for example. The text is incessantly cheery and reads like a school newsletter. We would have preferred the intelligent critical evaluation that makes the Moon books such great reading--and such great resources. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I love Monterey
There are only a handful of guidebooks about the Monterey Penninsula, and this is the best one. It is reliable, well-organized, and well-written. I have spent a while living in Monterey, and reference it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that will serve many readers
This is an excellent book, not only for tourists and visitors to the Monterey Peninsula, but also for those considering relocating there (like me).I wanted a book about the region that describes the neighborhoods andtowns in order to get a general feel for the area (information pertinent tothose contemplating a move), and this book does just that.It is amazinghow much information the authors have managed to jam into each page, andthey have included a good deal of local history. The book is written in awitty, engaging, almost conversational style.Unlike many books of thisgenre, the blurbs about restaurants, inns, and everything else are writtendescriptively, rather than subjectively or from the authors' personalpoints of view (which may differ from the reader). In short, this is avery well-written book from two people who clearly love the peninsula onwhich they live!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Bad To Say About This Book At All
In a nice pleasant format this guide delivers what it promises, describes what's to be seen, where to go, what to expect, and helps you get around in Portland. Should be a memorable trip. Can't wait.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO PORTLAND is a wonderful guide to the Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA area. It describes where the best neighborhoods are, where to find the healthiest foods, and what TV and radio options there are. There are also great recommendations for day trips found here. It would be even better if it described the different shopping malls in more detail, but despite this ommission, it's a wonderful book.
