5-0 out of 5 stars Rich visual guide to Croatia's cultural, natural, and historic heritage
I took three guides on a three week trip to Croatia in 2006: Lonely Planet, Bradt's, and this one. I used the first two to learn about where to stay and eat. I used the Knopf guide to truly learn about Croatia's amazing natural and cultural offerings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent map
I went to New York for the first time for two weeks. This map is great. It's small, easy to carry, and easy to read. You won't feel so obvious if you have to pull it out on the street corner or on the subway. It was so much better than the full size map that I got from the hotel.Beware, it only covers Manhattan. So if you have to travel to the outer boroughs (Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Queens) you'll need a different map. However, since all the siteseeing, shopping, and eating I wanted to do was located in Manhattan, it was the only map I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knopf Mapguides are the best!
I have bought several editions of this handy little guide over the years and am now giving one to all the guests at my daughter's New York wedding. It is very easy to use and has great suggestions for dining, sight-seeing etc. with very simple sections for each area of the city. I call it my New York bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I bought this inexpensive mapguide at the last minute before I left for a short trip to NYC.I'm so glad that I did!The helpful fold-out maps made Metro and foot travel much easier, plus the guide suggested several great places to see in NYC.I would have been lost without it!By the end of the weekend, other travelers were asking me for directions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it...
My husband and I used this mapguide in Paris in December of 2005 and absolutely LOVED it.It is extremely detailed without being cumbersome and is also very inconspicuous. We even used it several times to design our own walking tours of the City of Lights. We lost it at a patisserie on our last day and actually went back to look for it, because we didn't want to leave it behind.A must-buy for a trip to Paris. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it, read it, leave it at home (or in your hotel room)
If you're going on a cruise or tour and have one day in Venice, forget it - don't bother with this book. But if you have any time to spend, this guide will provide you with some context for everything you're going to see.And if you don't want context, don't want to understand the city, why not just go to the casino in Las Vegas? The gondola ride will be WAY cheaper.5-0 out of 5 stars Best City of Venice guide
On my first trip to Italy, I spent 8 nights in Venice with this book and was not disappointed with any aspect of the descriptions, histories, and cultural commentary of the book, however, this was my first time booking a 'recommended' hotel and got burned bad. This is why in all the Knopf books I have reviewed, I consistently state that unless you are talking about a world class place, like the Cipriani, you must use another resource to get your hotel and restaraunt picks. While I love the Knopf guidebooks for Cities, Venice is a little 'tough'; compared to Rome, Paris, London, Dublin, or Munich and NewYork(Cities I have been to or live in). Therefore I offer the following caveat to the traveler beyond recommending this book unconditionally.Venice is tough, and really is a theme park. What I mean by this is the following:Venice lost half its native population from like 1920 to 1980.It then lost half of what remained of its native population from 1980 to 2000.Venice, (the main islands), has no industry, employees, or even citizens left not completely relegated to tourism. And the tourists do come. There were so many Americans in Venice that it felt like a mall on Long Island. The result is that every Venetian you meet is, shall we say, a little edgy having to deal with hoardes of foreigners from 7 am till 2 am, 7 days a week!I saw more locals being abused by tourists in Venice than anywhere else, so the locals get back at you with scams, charging for every little thing, and otherwise looking to shave am extra buck off of you at every turn. Most of the time I do not mind this, because frankly you couldn't pay me enough to do their jobs, but the only time I have every really been fleeced was in Venice. No Cote D'Azure, or Miami, or New York, clip joint could compare to Venice5-0 out of 5 stars The Best In-Depth Guide to Venice
The Knopf Guide Venice provides a colorful picture-packed in-depth guide to Venice and the surrounding attractions of the Venice Lagoon. Like all the Knopf guides there is an extensive introduction giving the historical background to Venice. The individual tourist attractions are described in great detail with copious illustration. I wish more photographs were used rather than drawings. This minor fault is common to all the Knopf guides. There are good sections describing Murano, Burano, Lido and San Michele (the Cemetery Island) as well as the obligatory tourist attractions. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars for virtual and actual travelers
India has long been on my must-visit list, and after reading this gorgeous book, another in a lovely series that Knopf publishes, my appetite has been re-whetted.But even if you're strictly an armchair traveler, this book will satisfy as an informative if idealized picture of Rajasthan, the most romantic state of India.I hope Knopf produces more books on the rest of India soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, and Birkali is a great place!!
By reading this book, i realised how great the city of Birkali really is, and I was impressed by all of the great innovations and technological advancements that have come about from that great city.I truely reccomend this book, and i feel you should also look at the autobiography:"Devi Singh: The life of a true innovator." Go Blue!

5-0 out of 5 stars Knopf Guide India : Rajasthan : Jaipur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer,
Knopf has compiled a typically excellent guide that will be as useful and interesting to read after the trip as it is during. If anything, the guidebook is better as a post-trip reference manual than a guide becuase itis so packed with information, photographs and drawings. The informationis accurate and detailed.Because it is not a typical guide (does not listattractions in a bullet-point sort of way), should be purchased if you aredeciding to go to India or in addition to a more by-the-numbersguide.Read more

Great illustrations, to help you picture a place, or have an idea what it looks like so you'll find it when you are near it.I find the knopf guides to be good for places I haven't been to yet, so I can imagine how the whole city is laid out and looks.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book and the Metro Map is all you need
It's the most handy guidebook I ever used.It tells you all the attractions in Manhattan and it doesn't flood you wth words. It organized into sections, so you don't have to fold the map over and over to find where you want to go.If you love to travel by yourself and you don't want to carry a big book around and look like a tourist, you should get this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Throw your maps away!
If you are traveling to NYC, and spending your time in Manhattan, this is the only map book you will need. It's compact, and will fit in your pocket, and is easy to use and to read.5-0 out of 5 stars new york with ease...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book
I love this book. Lots of wonderful pictures, history, and explanations of the Maya, their culture, the ruins, etc. Even if you don't plan a trip to the area, it is a beautiful book to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!
I used this guide in 1998 while touring the Yucatan and its fantastic pyramids. While preparing for a spring trip to Guatemala, I re-discovered this guide and will use it throughout the Maya Highland areas of Guatemala. In addition, I use portions of this guide to teach my freshman-level anthropology students about Maya Traje. If you are a traveler and not a tourist, this is the guide for you!Of all of the guides I have used for Southern Mexico and Guatemala, this is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best comprehensive Rome travel book
As I stated in the review to the Paris Knopf guide, this set of books, for cities, is the best. This book has good maps of the Forums, and the Coliseum areas, and incredible amounts of historical information about almost every nook and cranny of the City.As I stated for this book-set before.2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty and interesting, but not particularly useful
On a recent trip to Italy, we used four Knopf books (Italy, Venice, Rome and Florence). Each was lovely and beautifully illustrated. While they contained wonderful historic information they were pretty much useless for our travels. They contained little in the way of useful and practical information.I'll try Fodor's or others for future travels.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book, but Choose Wisely
This book is an excellent SUPPLEMENTAL guidebook to Roma.I've been twice now, and I'm about to go back again (this time with my wife!).The first time I went I took a Let's Go guidebook, the second time both LG & theKnopf guide. The Knopf guide is far superior in terms of background andrelevance for the sites you will see, but if you're making reservationsyourself you'll need another resource.I suggest Lonely Planet.(ThatLet's Go attitude only works so long - I've become disenchanted with theentire series, and have jumped ship to Lonely Planet - they're much moreadult in presentation and style.I would not recommend Let's Go to anyone, even college students.) ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Glitzy illustrations NOT enough
Yes, the pictures are nice. But as a useful resource on a trip, this book was amazingly deficient.Major destinations are inadequately covered, while more minor ones are discussed in detail. The Lonely Planet guide was infinitely more useful and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference source for all sorts of info on Egypt
An insightful and complete reference work that includes information about all aspects of Egypt, from ancient times to today. This book makes understanding Egypt's long, varied, and sometimes complicated history easier. I lead groups to Egypt each year and this is my number one recommendation for them. The illustrations of the temples and tombs are the easiest way to gain an understanding as to their original grandeuer and how they really looked back then. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful guide-book to discover the Loire Valley
This is a digest. Knopf is Gallimard correspondant in USA. Gallimard published various guides-books in french about Loire Valley. This area is so much filled with castles and magnificient landscapes that one book wasnot enough. Knopf US edition for this digest is quite a good choice forthose who want to get more than the plain Michelin Green Guide. Castlesdrawings are just extraordinary. They built Gallimard reputation forguide-books. Don't forget to buy Arthur Frommer's, Lonely Planet orMichelin Red Guide if you don't know yet where to stay. Knopf guide to theLoire Valley will not be very useful in that matter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic map!
As a first time European visitor with a 13 year old daughter towingme about, I decided to purchase no less than 8 travel books prior to going.Doing most of our travel on foot, bus, or via "the tube," I found that my "light weight is better" tourist transformation completed with us carrying only this book, the "Travelling around Your Tube and bus map" (tfl.gov.uk) and the little guide book from the folks at "The London Pass."Being middle aged and of little brain, and lesser eyesight, this book has easy to read, has larger than normal print on the maps, and The Tube guide handily in the back.On top of it all, it is small, weighs only 4.9 oz (138 g - sweat soaked) and contains an index with such entries as "Westminster Abbey."The only thing that could have made it better would be to make the Tube map in one piece. This minor inconvenience was easily overlooked once the Pimms had set in.

2-0 out of 5 stars Give this one a pass
It seems like there are more guides to London than a person could count, but that means there are some substandard ones among them. This is one that offers very little. The main problem is that it lacks detail, and gives only a cursory explanation of the limited number of subjects that it covers. The maps are good, but that's really all this book has going for it. And since you can get good maps from other places, there's no need to buy this book just to have a map. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great compact maps to the city
We've just returned from Barcelona, having brought several pocket guides with us -- this one was the lightest to carry and had the best maps. The city is divided into six sections, each with short descriptions of several attractions and restaurants, and each with a fol-out map to that section. These maps were included metro stops, street names and the places listed, and were augmented by small color photographs.Attraction and restaurant listings include hours, prices and telephone numbers/The front and back covers fold-out also and give general and metro information and some hotel listings. We found this little guide to be fairly useful, but particularly liked the maps. ...
