5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent map and current
I bought this map before taking a driving trip in the Yucatan in April 2006. It is an excellent road map and has current road information which is important because older maps are missing roads. Signage in the Yucatan can be very poor. I highly advise buying a road map if you're driving around the Yucatan at all! It saved us a few times from long backtracks after we missed turnoffs due to poor signage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read if you are an artist...
I can tell that this was a really interesting book. After reading it, I now have a new outlook on his work, as I finally understand it thanks to this book, as well as complete respect for Edward. An amazing individual Edward Weston was with a fascinating life, with all who he encountered.A must read if you are an artist, photographer or not!

5-0 out of 5 stars Daybooks of Edward Weston
Second time reading Weston's Day Books over thirty years.First time I was young and only looking for technical hints. This time I'm much more interested in relationships, family, and Weston's struggle with his art, money and lifeA must read for all artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Weston experience- an introspective look
A fascinating introspective look into the mind of one of the great American photographers of the beginning of the 20th century, Edward Weston. With his intricate, yet simple, and sometimes abstract images, Weston created a world of his own together with his "one true love," his camera. By evidently pouring his soul into every entry of his daybooks, Weston makes the reader gain a greater understanding of his technique and extraordinary eye for beauty. The chronological organization of entries takes the reader from Weston's days in Mexico through his days in California.Read more

Editorial Review

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years, and as a result has experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A difficult country to write a guide for
Cuba is a fascinating country with a socio-political system all its own. Things also change rapidly, especially in the big urban centres such as Havana so it must be a difficult place to write a guidebook for.
1-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy this one ...
... the following letter was sent by us to LP after using the (then) fresh off the press LP Cuba in July 2004.We still did not hear from them.
2-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the next edition.
This particular edition of LP Cuba will do you little good in the year 2005 and it's not necessarily all LP's fault as Cuba undergoes a metamorphosis every other day or so.So, go with another guide for more up to date information on currency and prices in general as well as legal casas.

Editorial Review

In the mid-1980s, Tony Cohan and his artist wife, Masako, decided they had had enough of the hectic pace and inherent insecurities of life in Los Angeles and made tracks for the historic town of San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico. At first they rented rooms in a hotel. Then, when the hotel became less appealing, they graduated to renting an apartment. Almost inevitably, they eventually found themselves buying a 250-year-old hacienda on the verge of collapse, with wonderfully elegant Spanish colonial architecture and a garden brimming with papayas, avocados, and custard apples. 5-0 out of 5 stars enjoy Mexico vicariously!
This author has a wonderful style that made me feel like I was there with him, experiencing his zen-like transformation from fast-lane city dweller to truly connected human being. His luxurious use of prose and vivid descriptions, combined with his sincere love for Mexico, made reading this book a most enjoyable vicarious adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars ¡A mí me gusta!
I think he nails it.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Seinfeld Book of Living in Mexico
How is this book similar to the sitcom "Seinfeld"?Well, it's a book about nothing.Absolutely nothing. There is no action event of relevance. This book just describes a couple of Americans visiting Mexico, San Miguel de Allende more specifically, falling gradually in love with the laid back lifestyle, and never coming back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content - lousy binding
though the content of this guide is excellent, the binding is absolutely apalling! i have had this book for one week and it is already falling apart! entire pages are falling out! i can only imagine what it's going to look like, once i have read the entire book.....
4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a well-researched, well written and reliable guide.
In the competitive world of Argentia travel guides this guide is one of the most authoritative, up-to-date and practical guides out. Rough Guide's direct competition is Lonely Planet (see my review) and, between the two, well it's almost a toss up - both have strengths and irritations, but the nod goes to Rough Guide.
3-0 out of 5 stars Argentina Rough Guide not as a great as other Rough Guides
I've been a rough guide user since the company started, and have gone through 6 or7 7 rough guides. When this one arrived in the mail, I was very excited to get my hands all over it.While it had plenty of information, and the usual casual but informative style, we found that information in it wasn't always reliable.Prices tended to be off, which may reflect more upon Argentina's economy than the rough guides. But there just seemed to something off withthe organization of the information, some of the locations on maps were incorrectly placed, and busing information was poorly documented.Because I'm partial to the rough guide style, I would probably buy this book again...after all nobody's perfect. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Guide Intro
This booklet was offered as a bundle with another book I purchased. The booklet itself is well done, but not very extensive re: the wildlife of Costa Rica.It seemed to be a bit pricey to me, even at a discounted rate, for what I received.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice laminated quick guide to common animals/birds
These are great for families, casual wildlife fans. For die-hard bird fans, you'll need the BIG Birds of Costa Rica book.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD ENOUGH FOR A FIRST TIME VISIT TO COSTA RICA
Although this pocket field guide is extremely limited - only listed three species of butterflies - it did enable us to identify the difference between Howler, Spider and Capuchin monkeys. It sufficed as a guide for my week long (and first visit) to Costa Rica. However, if you are spending more time in the rainforest, I would recommend a more detailed guide for your area(s) of interest. Enjoy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take this book on your next trip to Riviera Maya!
Mr. Hinsdale has penned an excellent travel guide for the Riviera Maya (The Carribean coast line of Mexico), the heart and soul of which is Playa Del Carmen, at least for those looking for something more laid back than the high rises and high octane lifestyle of Cancun. In spite of the rapid growth along this coastline, Playa has managed to retain much of its sleepy, beach bum charm with a very international flavor. The guide is packed full of usefull information for the travler along with an extensive listing of dining and lodging options to fit most every budget. Included are plenty of pictures that give an idea of what to expect when you get there. The guide also gives the traveler plenty of ideas for adventure and fun, from touring ancient ruin sites to cenote diving with good descriptions of each of these adventures (you'll run out of money or time before you run out of things to do!).All the needed contact information is included. The guide books side boxes also make for fun reading. These are gray colored boxes located on almost every page that are full of interesting information and or fascinating facts about the area.I had fun just paging through the book and reading these side bars.If I had to find one fault in the book is that its coverage of the ruins sites, while adequate, does not give much depth; so if you are planning any extensive visits to the ruin sites I would pick up a guide covering those sites. For the casual traveler this book will be sufficient.I would Highly recommend this guide to anyone headed to Riviera Maya. The authors love of this place is evident along with the joy he gets from sharing it with others!(And if you are looking for a fun beach read check out my thriller novel "A Tourist in the Yucatan!") ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't go to Mexico without it!
My wife and I went to Mexico to get married and we are not Spanish speakers. This handy book is first class and here are the reasons why:-
3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably good Mexican Spanish, TERRIBLE pronunciation guide
This handy new phrasebook is MUCH closer to the Mexican Spanish being spoken today than any other I have found. It's actually pretty good, BUT the pronunciation guide is very, very bad for anyone from the central/western US or western Canada. If you're from those areas and don't already have some idea of correct Spanish pronunciation, avoid this phrasebook.
5-0 out of 5 stars We want more!
I just want to say how pleased I am I have bought this phrasebook. I have used it on my recent visit to Mexico. It was a 'perfect companion'. The book is extremely well organised, covers what a visitor needs like food, shopping, etc. It also goes beyond what most phrasebooks have to offer. It has an unusual linguistic awareness of the language and its regional dialects. This is a taste of what could be developed into a course book on the Mexican language and its dialects. That would be most welcome. We want more! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars THOUGHTS AFTER THE CRUISE
FROMMERS WAS RIGHT ON THE MARK ON MOST INFORMATION. I WOULD RECOMMEND WATCHING THE DINNER PRICES AS THOSE LISTED FOR ENTEES INCLUDE JUST THAT- ALMOST ALL PLACES ARE ALA CARTE AND A $15 ENTREE ENDS UP COSTING $30 FOR THE MEAL.LIQUOR PRICES (U.S.) ARE OUTRAGEOUS. A SHOT OF J.D. FOR $14?? DRINK LOCAL WINES AND BEER IN BOTH COUNTRIES. GOOD VALUE AND PRODUCT OUT OF THE TOURIST PLACES.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excels as a restaurant guide.
I took this guide, along with Footprint and Rough Guide, on a two month tour of Argentina, Uruguay & Chile. Though this guide's title doesn't say it, the guide also covers two important locations in Uruguay (Montevideo and Puente del Este), a very nice plus. 5-0 out of 5 stars A guidebook full of insight
This is a very nice book. I live in the South of Chile and I got it on a recent visit to the Central part of the country. I find the suggestions on places to visit and especially to eat very good and I must say that all the restaurants recommended in and around Santiago in which I ate, were excellent. Also one day we were to make a reservation for a table for lunch and we tried the phone number that showed on the 2002 edition of a local guidebook. It was disconnected. Than we tried the number indicated on the Frommer's and it worked!!!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the independent ttraveller
This book was excellent for our needs. We rented a car and drove around the Yucatan, not the Cancun strip but other less travelled areas. One good thing is that the book was recently updated, the area has changed so fast that you need a current guidebook to keep up with the rapid development. The maps were good inside the book and also the history and description was readable not boring like in some of the books. One oddity though was that the author ignored Akumal, where we spent six pleasant days at a modestly priced resort that wasn't even mentioned in the book. Don't know why the entire town was basically ignored when it is a signficant destination and other guidebooks cover it. However overall the book was quite useful to me. I also bought the Rough Guide road map which was also very helpful because the signage is often poor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don' tleav home with out it!
I agree with the previous reviewer. This book covers all the bases, plus has plenty of sidelights to out of the way places to keep your trip interesting. It was evident that the author has done her homework! She will lead you to some great places to eat!I also recomemend you Check out the thriller "A Tourist in the Yucatan" a great beach read set in the Yucatan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended-- a big help.
I don't usually bother to do this, but I just wanted to post here that this guidebook is great: full of interesting ideas, and very trustworthy. All the basics are covered, but it also includes funny and reliable tips on cool places the average tourist might not go to, like Punta Allen and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.I really liked the fact that when the book covers the crucial tourist areas, it also includes a range options for making your experience even more enjoyable and varied, like mentioning spots that the locals actually go to.You can tell that whoever wrote this book did a lot of exploring to find interesting places.

2-0 out of 5 stars A nice thought but completely impractical
As we flipped through the Rough Guide to Guatemala 2002 edition about a month ago, we were really impressed with the layout and the backdoor feel that the Rough Guide had as opposed to the more conventional guide books. Our only hesitation was that the practical information like hotels and transportation schedules might be out of date because it was published so long ago. We found out that a new version of the Rough Guide to Guatemala was going to come out right before we left for our trip so we decided to hold out until it was published. We were so excited when it arrived and couldn't wait to get to Guatemala. When we arrived, however, it became immediately apparent that Rough Guides had not bothered to live up to their claim of reliability. The information in the guide was completely outdated. We ran into logistical problems at every turn. I understand that Guatemala is one of the countries that is in a state of constant flux but some of the hotel recommendations in the book had disappeared years ago. On the whole, the book was good for the ideas of what to see and do and the history of the country but logistically speaking, it left much to be desired. We ended up forgetting the book completely for logistical planning and asked the locals instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars New edition on the way
It looks like the third edition ("Rough Guide to Guatemala 3") will be released January 30, 2006. Unless you're leaving real soon, I would wait for that to be released.

2-0 out of 5 stars buy the newest guide you can find, this one is too old.
I just returned from 2 months in Guatemala.

3-0 out of 5 stars Many errors in LP Brazil
Lonely Planet is usually the best travel guide out there.Unfortunately, there Brazilian version is full of errors.A friend of mine purchased LP for our trip to Brazil in May 2005 while I got Let's Go Brazil.Like another review stated, there are several errors in Sao Paolo alone. We were search for a Italian restaurant that is suppose to have the "best pizza in Brazil".When we got to the restaurant, we were told by the owner that the restaurant has never sold pizza.I was told by one travel agent/guide in Sao Paolo that the person that did the section on Sao Paolo was only there for 1-2 days and there was no way he could have accurately gotten all the information that he needed in that short time span.We also had a problem finding out hostel in Rio using the map in LP.For a book that was release in Jan. 2005, it is missing much information.I would purchase Let's Go just to have another reference guide book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet should be ashamed
After trying to use Lonely Planet with my first Brazilian stop, Sao Paulo, I would definitely NOT recommend this travel guide.I read criticism of the prior edition on Amazon but assumed that Lonely Planet would have corrected the errors in this updated edition.I assumed wrong.Errors on the map still persist. The first day I wasted a good amount of time looking for accommodations that were incorrectly indicated.Once I did find them, I found that Lonely Planet was way off with the price information.Granted the Real has increased recently, but the prices were more than 3 times higher than Lonely Planet's estimate, so the information is plain wrong, not because of currency fluctuations.Another day I wasted time trying to find a bookstore that wasn't even close to the map's dot. Assuming the stated address was correct, I was told to take a cab from the spot where the map indicated it should be because it was so far away.
4-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't have done Brazil without it
My husband and I spent 3 weeks traveling around Brazil.Macei, Salvador, Rio, Blumeneau, and Foz de Iguau (Iguazu Falls). We used a travel agent who was from Brazil to book our hotels and flights in advance, but as far as local travel (and in one case, arriving in an airport an hour from our destination city, Blumeneau), we found this book indispensable. For example, it clearly explains how the bus systems work and why you should take them.It also have info in Rio about an airport bus that saved us at least $25, if I remember correctly, in not taking a cab.Recapped the cost of the book right there. Most often, and in spite of my being able to converse in Portuguese, the book was more helpful even than the hotel staff of the hotels where we stayed.

I have just finished driving 8,500 mile, through six countries (Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina & Chile), and I had with me this guide and 'Footprint - South America'.

3-0 out of 5 stars they could've done better
I've used rough guides before for cities, and they were very good, so I didn't even think to get a different book for Mexico. However, Mexico was just too much for this book.It got me where I needed to go for the most part, but the maps are really small and had mistakes more than several times. Often hotel and restaurant prices are also not labeled correctly. My worst experience with this book was when I got to Mexico City and discovered that there are no street names on the city map.Yeah, that was an interesting trip to find the tourist booth for another map.Basically, this book is okay, but you will have to do a lot more work than you'll want to when you get to Mexico.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best - Roughly Speaking
Rough guides are ideal for a certain kind of holiday. If you are planning to go to an all inclusive resort in Cancun and only venture out for arranged excursions then this book will never leave the shelf. Rough guides are for those who want to explore the real thing. That is why I won't visit any country without a copy.1-0 out of 5 stars It's called the "Rough Guide" because it's rough.
This book was a disappointment. It's information was incomplete and uninformative (and I'm talking about the recent FIFTH Edition -- published in 2002).Even in the touristy beachy destinations, I did not find the information helpful. Many of the budget hotels listed were closed, and there were no similar alternatives provided.Very little historical background for the sites I saw.Not much value added.I spent time on the Pacific Coast (not Baja) and in the Central Highlands. For Nahrit, Jalisco, the Bajio, and Michoacan states, it's practically worthless. Some of the worst maps in the business (Lonely Planet has excellent maps, so even if its information is lacking, at least you have reliable orientation).I would be VERY CAREFUL about buying another Rough Guide. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book on a Pleasant Country
First a disclaimer, I lived in Panama, went to high school and college in the old Canal Zone.I have nothing but pleasant memories. In part because I left before Noriega came to power. His dictatorship was a horrible period for both countries. This well-written, up to date book points out what so many Zonians knew for generations: Panama is a lovely place to live.It has beaches, hot steamy rain forests, cool valley's, historical sites and even very chilly coffee producing mountains. Its two large major cities at both ends of the canal are very cosmopolitan. They are modern, have good medical facilities, etc.A tourist mecca for sure.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Before I moved to Panama I read all of the books on the subject. Despite having some good info. this book really turned me off.
5-0 out of 5 stars Choose Panama, I liked it!
My wife and I are going to retire in Altos del Maria, Panama in the next few years.I bought this book to add to the library and see what the author had to say.It is a great first book or an add-on to a collection. With nearly four years of research and visits to Panama, I found few things I would disagree with and a few new items which I didn't know. The hotel and resturants section is nice although guessing prices is a moving target. At times, the author seems to become a cheerleader and promoter, but, that may be because the subject is truly exciting.I would recommend this purchase to anyone for pre-visit/dreaming of retirement fare.Pay attention to the social and cultural sections; they are right on.And, IN CAPITAL LETTERS, take his advice on getting a lawyer for any official business regarding property purchase or obtaining a Visa. ...
