4-0 out of 5 stars Machu Picchu
Purchased this book after just getting back from our first trip to Peru and Machu Picchu. Wonderful photographs. Pablo Neruda's poem, "Heights of Machu Picchu", helped to bring even more meaning to our Machu Picchu's memories. This text is a wonderful way to enhance your experience of actually being at Machu Picchu. It also makes a great coffee table item.

4-0 out of 5 stars splendid photography
Barry Brukoff has done a truly fine job of capturing the essence of Machu Picchu. I've told many that you cannot convey the feeling of this place in photos, but Brukoff proves that you can.His photos made me feel as though I was back there, discovering the majesty of the site and indulging in a leisurely and personal exploration of the details that delighted me during my visit, details that those on quick tourist jaunts usually miss.Visually, this book is five stars.Neruda's poetry, however, missed the mark for me. An earlier reviewer picked out the best of it and included those lines in his review (see below).I only wish it all worked that well.Personally, I would have preferred excerpts from Neruda's work and excerpts from the writings of Hiram Bingham (Bingham was the man who discovered the site in 1911).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Moving Spiritual Connection to the Incas
Whether or not you ever visit, or think you might want to visit Machu Picchu, I highly recommend this gorgeous book to you.The combination of its poetry, photography, and design wonderfully connect us to a distant and mysterious culture which we understand little about today.

3-0 out of 5 stars This guide needs some serious work.
Lonely Planet guides are known for their no-nonsense, off-the-beaten-path advise, and their reliable hotel and restaurant recommendations. However, this guide does come up to the quality level of the dozen or more Lonely Planet guides that I havereviewed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid LP material
This book is nicely revised for the modern age as it quickly helps you make up your mind where to go in Bolivia by using photo highlights and sample itineraries. The advice on activities I found to be solid and reliable. Alas, the book suffers from several imperfections, such as listing places to stay and eat that no longer reflect the description and overly enthusiastic highlights and recommendations (the biggest bummer for me was the promise that Salar de Uyuni reflects the sky with "any amount of water in it" - not true, I paid for extra trip to see the Salar before and after a rain because of LP and then learned from my experience and the locals that the Salar fills up only in Jan/Feb during the height of the rainy season, but most of the year when it rains the place is just gray and gloomy...) You can address those imperfections by ignoring accommodation recommendations (just walk the street where you want to stay and ask to see the room before you check in - there are plenty of better and cheaper places to stay in Bolivia than the book mentions) and don't expect to see "Lonely Planet moments" anywhere you go (you will see some, if you have luck and good weather, but the sun does not shine every day even in Bolivia). Anyway, Bolivia is a great country to visit and the book was useful on my trip. Too bad it got stolen at an internet place in La Paz :(

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy guide when travel to see tourist areas
Lonely planet does provide an easy guide to new places. what to se what to do and what to expect in prices. The guide could need more maps and broken the country into certain areas. I am satisifed with the information it gives me ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars guatemala map
great map. Since I purchased it for a collage project, I just wished it were all on one side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Map
This map was very helpful in getting me throughout Belize (northern Belize is cut off on the map because of the map key), Guatemala, and part of Honduras (it covers the northern part from Copan to the coast). The map was very accurate when it came to the roads and showing whether the road was paved or unpaved. The only problem I had was finding a hot springs in southern Belize that was listed as a point on interest on the map. When I got there it was a really nasty pond that wasn't taken care of.Other than that the map was excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Guatemala country map available
We travel to Guatemala several times a year, and this map is my constant companion. I've looked at everything else which is available, and the ITMB map of Guatemala is head and shoulders above any other country map I've seen. It embodies the goal of cartographers to include lots of information and yet remain easy to read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great graphics, spectacular misinformation
As a US-based correspondent for a Mexican magazine who travels to Mexico often and has written for other publications there, I keep my bookcase well stocked with tour books that serve as reference guides. When I want accurate information, I open my trusty Rough Guide. I open the "Eyewitness" guide when I want to see some photos or pictures to illustrate the information in more reliable but text-heavy volumes. But under no circumstances would I ever rely on the information in this one. I've caught too many flaming mistakes that go beyond any possible realm of simple human error and into that of stuff that's just plain made up. My favorite is perhaps the translation of the name of the archaeological site Cacaxtla, which INAH (the Mexican government's National Institute of Anthropology and History) says means "the merchant's pack"...and yet somehow this, shall we say, *imaginative* guide tells us the word means "the place where the rain comes to die." And that's hardly an isolated occurrence in this book. Give it full marks for being a very good looking book with lots of pretty pictures and nicely executed street maps, both of which can be useful to have on hand. Just don't actually *read* it, except to cause much mirth and eye-rolling among your Mexican friends. Even if you know nothing about Mexico, you'll come away from this text more ignorant of the country and its culture than you were before you cracked it open.

3-0 out of 5 stars Take it, if you are going for history and museums
This guide is a great book for daydreaming about going to all these amazing places or reminding yourself of them. It's not the most practical "on the road" traveller's companion though. There's too few hotel and restaurant recommendations and information on transportation options. Yet the illuminating pictures of historical sites and maps make it an adorably nice looking guide. If these are the things you mainly want from a guidebook, add one star to the rating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the one who Travels
I have trusted Eye Witness Travel Guides for many years and they never let me down.My one complaint about this particular guide is its heavy Protestant bias.Mexico is a country of predominately Catholic influence and practice, but the authors chose to down-play that aspect of the deeply beautiful Mexican culture. However, this book gets 4 stars because it shows you the big places and can lead you into the lesser-known treasures of the country.Great for the traveller and the tourist (there is a difference). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for intermediate learners!
This book is perfect for my skill level right now.The stories are interesting and fairly easy to read. They really help me pin point my weakness and introduce new vocabulary. The reason for only 4 stars is that I feel this is not really an appropriate book for the beginner or advanced learner.I think someone with more advanced Spanish would be incredibly bored and I think a beginner would struggle too much and rely on the facing page translations. For me it is really perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for improving Spanish reading skills
Stories from Mexico/Historias de Mexico is a wonderful book for improving Spanish reading skills. In fact, the other two books in the series, Stories From Spain and Stories From Latin America are equally great. Each book makes wide and varied use of vocabulary so that each one of the books teaches new words. The translations are usually extremely faithful, which is important when the point is to build vocabulary knowledge and not literary beauty. These books are even great for teaching English to Spanish speaking ESL students. While spending my summer in Costa Rica I used Historias de Mexico with one of my English students and she loved it.The stories are short, so one does not become frustrated and they are very entertaining.Buy this book!I would LOVE to see a professional recording come out on this series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Spanish Starter
This soft-covered book of 140 pages contains 16 Mexican legends spanning >1500 years. These are easy, enjoyable stories to read, especially appropriate for the early Spanish learner. Having side-by-side English translation is immensely helpful [though in the back of the book there is an additional appropriate dictionary]. Few of the complicated Spanish verb forms, viz., subjunctive, are found which is a minor point. All the legends are popular Mexican legends, appropriate for young and old. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for self-study
This book is highly recommended. It is used as part of our Intermediate level Conversational Spanish Classes at Spanish Black Belt in Washington DC. It contains many short readings writen in both English and Spanish which helps students better administer their transition to the advanced levels. The topics of these readings are highly interesting and well represent much of the culture and traditions of many different Spanish-speaking countries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories from Latin America
Stories from Latin America is one of the most valuable books a Spanish student can own.It contains 16 short and entertaining stories in both Spanish and English.Reading this book is the perfect way to review your Spanish reading skills if you haven't taken a course in a while, or if you are simply looking to improve your reading speed. The book is geared toward intermediate Spanish students (equivalent to Spanish 3 or AP Spanish in high school). If you're new to Spanish, then the book will probably be pretty difficult. If you're intermediate or better in Spanish, then I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful stories, excellent language-learning tool
I've been trying to learn Spanish on my own with limited success over the past 2 years, but I think I'll make alot of progress using bilingual books. Repeated exposure to proper Spanish grammar, verb tenses, and vocabulary is far more beneficial to me than rote memorization from a textbook, and sometimes the stories are so interesting that you forget that you're reading a different language. The folklore of Latin America is brought to life by the stories, which cover many scenarios and countries. My biggest criticsm is that the dictionary in the back should include more words, and the translation could be more literal, if possible. Sometimes, although rarely, words are used that aren't translated and aren't in the dictionary. Nevertheless, I felt my Spanish comprehension and vocabulary improving with each story I read, and I'm looking forward to moving on to Historias de Mexico. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Questions about it - buy the book!
If you are going to spend any time in the country and want to tool around, you'd be a fool not to get a copy of this book for your backpack.I just got home and gave my friend a hug for grabbing this book out the the bargain bin at Borders for me.In several cities I was able to pick it up and quickly flip through to find a map and make my way through the town.Or simply discover something interesting within or nearby my location. It's an absolute must for anybody going into the country.Well put together and concise - 5 stars for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars as good as you'll find -- but they need to update it
This is really the only comprehensive guidebook to El Salvador that is widely available. The Lonely Planet and Let's Go and other books have chapters on El Sal in their books on Central America, but none of them go into real detail. In fact, I've noticed that most of the guidebooks don't recommend going to El Salvador, or skipping it if you're short on time.4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Help for a Native Absent for 20 Years
I found this book quite helpful. I'm a native from El Salvador who had been out of the country for 20 years.I found it a good supplement to other sources of information (e.g., local phone books in El Salvador, people and friends).Although some of the directory information may be dated, most of the facts and directions still hold. It's best to cross-reference the book with a local phone book for more accuracy.Yet, the book is a great trip planning tool.It allows you to pick and chose places and things to do at a pace that not even locals can keep up.It's clear that a lot of good work went into making the book. The level of detail is beyond what any local can know all by himself (e.g., bus routes, mores, festivals, local rituals, etc.).I found the hand-drawn maps most helpful and the history/background informaiton information least helpful.Advisories should apply to all locations outside the central city or popular foreign tourist attractions. Also, the book does not address which locations are most ideal to visit depending on the small universe weather conditions, e.g., heavy rains or dry, hot to extremely hot temperatures.I recommend this book.I've found no other books as helpful as this one but feel that the book and its contents could be much improved, e.g., day-trips, sports events, local festivity schedules, shopping information, entertainment options, ground and non-ground recreational activities, specific coverage and related-activities regarding aviation, boatin, sailing, surfing, fishing, golf, lakes, rivers and bodies of water, etc. (perhaps on future editions, beyond the 2nd). I currently own both of the first two editions. They're both pretty much worn out and it's because they go with me and take me places each time I visit there.I just wish the book were more expansive and provide material for all the other sites that one encounters while going from place to place, yet this would make it too thick and heavy. Also, if you ever go to El Teleferico, please say Hi to Mr. Moon (a local cartoonist) there for me! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Yucatan Guidebook
I bought the Moon Cancun & Cozumel for a family trip to Cancun, and got this one for traveling on my own later. I loved the Cancun book, and was equally impressed with this one. The depth is amazing - the authors seemed to go everywhere (including Chiapas, which isn't really part of the Yucatan but still fascinating). I had planned to get the Lonely Planet guide, but it's puny compared to this one and is three years old (but it costs the same!). The Moon book covers all budgets - I mostly stay at mid-range places, but talked to backpackers and high-end using the same book and they seemed equally happy. I also liked the authors' writing, unlike the cookie-cutter books you sometimes get. The background/informational sections were detailed and well-written, and they throw in enough humor thoughout to keep it interesting.Moon isn't well-known, but this is really a top-notch book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall guide, But
This is a good overall guide with decent maps. But I think it misses some great little out of the way places.I recommend you read through the reviewes of several guide books and choose at least 2 and probably three to take on your trip, as all will likely lack in some aspect.Oh! and do check out the thriller "Tourist in the Yucatan" for a thrilling beach read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and accurate
Took three books with us on our trip to the Yucatan; the Moon Handbook was the best by far. The maps are excellent. This book covered everything thoroughly including the states of Chiapas and Tabasco. The other books spent too much time on Cancun. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Practical & helpful, but flawed
I've used Lonely Planet (LP) guides in several nations now, and each time the LP guide has proven highly readable and practical, but never flawless. This Venezuela guide seems to have a few more flaws and omissions than expected.True, the book has that wealth of practical information on budget hotels, restuarants, night life, busses, the metro, travel tips, etc., plus some decent maps, and it captures the nation's lively character. But a couple city maps omit vital parts of town, prices are occasionally off mark, and the book omits words on dangers to pedestrians from speeding drivers or the congestion in Caracas. The author's exalted view of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas left me puzzled, and travelers should understand that at this writing free speech seems questionable under the rule of left-leaning President Hugo Chavez.
4-0 out of 5 stars Take Venezuela w/ a grain of salt
We took two guides with us to Venezuela during our July 2006 trip. One was Fodor's, one was Lonely Planet. Both were valueable for their insights into culture and customs, but only Lonely Planet offered practical information such as names and phone numbers for hotels and attractions. That said, much of the information was outdated or deceptive. For instance, food and taxi service in Venezuela is very expensive! (not the $5 a meal lonely planet represents).Caracas is not set up for tourists and many of the areas are unsafe to travel without a local guide. Also, finding an offical place to change money can be challenging, I recommend using taxi drivers who are readily available.Good luck! You may need it.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a joke!
We normally swear by Lonely Planet guides (to southern Africa, Central America, SE Asia), but this one to Venezuela is far and away the most inadequate: Sometimes I wondered if the author had even set foot in the country, or if he just called up his buddies who in turn passed along 2nd-hand information. For starters, many of his write-ups are meant for people traveling in private cars; this is by no means a "back-packer's" guide.Sometimes, for example, we'd be interested in a particular place the author described, only to be disappointed that the place was accessible only by private vehicle or you could walk to it but had to cross 6-lane highways (quite common in Caracas).Furthermore, this guidebook provides nothing that other guidebooks on the country provide: in sum, Lonely Planet Venezuela rides on the otherwise strong LP reputation; it's of no merit and could actually be the source of a lot of headaches.I hope for the upcoming edition the author actually visits Venezuela!LP should know better... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Guatemala in Pictures
I'm very careful about the books I buy for my 6th grade classroom, since the money comes from a fund donated by parents and grandparents of my current and former students. I chose this book because it was recommended by the Barahona Center for Studies of Books in Spanish. Although the book is in English, I think it was a very good investment. The publisher could improve the pictures but the text of this updated edition is clear, well-written, and very carefully documented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vey useful classroom tool
I really like this series and the Guatemala title is an excellent addition. I am a junior-high teacher and am always scrambling for reliable books on Latin American countries and their histories. There just aren't enough out there!

1-0 out of 5 stars Few pictures, way over-priced
Ordered this "picture" book for a friend from Guatelmala. It was nearly $30 and I was very unhappy upon receipt. The book does have a lot of small pictures, but few that actually capture the beauty of Guatemala. The book has more writing than pictures, despite the title "Guatemala in Pictures".The book is the size of some children's books and at this cost, I would save the money. It is being returned to Amazon the same day received. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unpretentious and Comprehensive
This is an unpretentious travel book but fairly thick almost 600 pages long. I say unpretentious because unlike many other travel books it features mainly black and white photographs that give it a certain aura like an old black and white movie that seems to suit the Baja. The book is very detailed like a Michelin guide with page after page of details and information on all aspects of the Baja peninsula including roads, maps, beaches, entertainment, restaurants, hotels, etc. It is an excellent guide and makes a nice souvenir.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cummings Covers the Waterfront...And the Backroads
You couldn't ask for a better travel book on Baja. I found myself reading it repeatedly on my trip, not just for hotel and restaurant info, but like a novel--for the sheer pleasure of it. The sidebars and thumbnail histories are so well-researched and expertly delivered that I rank it not just among the best travel books on Mexico, but among the best books of any kind. The concise discussion of the ejido system and of the changing rules for foreign real estate purchases are just two small examples.Cummings touches on every aspect of Mexican society and its interaction with the people to the north, in addition to giving the essentials on gas stations and bus schedules and airports and resorts-all in the delightfully understated style that has become his hallmark.
4-0 out of 5 stars We used it, but we swore at it a few times
This book was our primary guide through the 2,000 mile odyssey of driving the Baja pennisula. It did cover every place we saw BUT it was missing information or out of date which surprised me since it was just revised October 2004. It definately does not cover Cabo well, but that is not its focus, so I did not mind that weakness as much as the others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing rought about this guide!
If you're planning a trip to Chile (or wish you were) this is the book to get you ready. Dealing with everything from money exchange to lodgings to transportation, it has invaluable information to carry you from "tourist" to "traveler." The content is divided by geographical sections (much as the country itself is) to make it easier to plan a trip or get the specific information you need on a trip already planned. If you're interested in getting away from the escorted "back on the bus in five minutes" type of trip, this guide will get you there. There are wonderful descriptions of each region and its attractions, plus names, phone numbers and prices for food, lodging, transportation...even the location of the cambios de change for changing money, ATMs, and tourist informtion centers in each town.3-0 out of 5 stars very detailed information - but no enthusiasm
The Rough Guide is full of useful, accurate information ( a little out of date) - but the writers lack a certain enthusiasm for this country. An enthusiasm that can be found in other books such as the Open Road guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful
having spent a couple of months travelling through chile, i got to know my rough guide well, and had chance to compare to many of the other guide books out there, there are speciality books which cover other areas better and in more detail, some only available in chile. but of the mainstream guides this is definately the best. the cultural information is where the rough guides stand out, in fact a couple of our favorite places in Chile didnt even warrant a mention in one of the better known guide book series. the section on accomodation was the most lacking although occasionaly useful, as none of the guide books seem to have discovered the backpackers hostels which cover chile. but aside from this if you want a guide to chile, this is one of the best. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
This is by far the best guidebook to Cancun and surrounding area out there. The depth is incredible; the authors mention somewhere that they stayed in Cancun for two months, and it shows. It's not just Cancun either - the coverage of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, the Mayan ruins, and all up and down the coast is excellent. The problem with some guides (Lonely Planet, Frommers, etc) is they "take sides" - they're either too cynical about "gringos on vacation" or totally ignore anything that's not sold in a package. The Moon book really showed both sides: from beaches and nightclubs and five-star restaurants, to museums and Mayan ruins and street food. (Real culture in Cancun - who knew??) There's also good suggestions for people traveling with kids, another complaint of mine about some guides. We got all the R&R we wanted, plus a few things I didn't expect. Moon isn't a well-known name, but this book is worth getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used to be a loyal lonely planet buyer, until I got my hands on this book. The maps, detail, and recommendations were spot on, from the restaurants to the accomdations to the activities. The only time that we had anything other than an excellent meal in Cozumel was when we went to a place recomended by someone in the hotel, as opposed to what was recommended in this book. The detail on each location is very informative.I took three guidebooks with me to Cozumel (fine, I admit it, I am guidebook obsessed), and next time I would take nothing other than this one. In fact, based on this trip, I would pick a Moon guide every time I travel. The section on the Mayan ruins was especially informative.I took the book's recomendation to travel to Coba instead of Tulum, and I was not disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Armchair Traveller
I've always wanted to visit Peru and see for myself not only the ancient places and the beautiful landscape but also the cities, villages, markets, and Peruvians of today. And now too many years have gone by when I had neither the money nor the time. Time is abundant now, but health not any longer. So I just bought the Insight Guides book on Peru and what an excellent purchase this has been: The interesting articles on Peru's geography, history, culture, economics, traditions, and politics accompanied by a multitude of beautiful fotos and, last not least, good tips for the traveller as to what to do and take along, and where to go, and when to be careful, really make possible a personalized guided tour at your own leisure even while you comfortably sit in your armchair and, perhaps, have some CDs on with Peruvian folk music as a background. It is true that the book - because of the paper used to make the colourful fotos look their best - is a bit heavy to take along. But it certainly provides for an excellent preparation for those who are lucky enough to make the trip.

4-0 out of 5 stars heavy
The upside is that this book has a lot of really teriffic color photos. However, the upside is also its downside...since the pages are all the heavy glossy material, it makes for a disproportionately heavy book considering its small size.Good for reading before your trip, but might become too heavy to lug around while trekking through the country.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Guide, specially for specific interests
Insight Guide Peruhas one noticiable strenght by its side: This is probablythe best source of deep background on specific destinations and activities. As a tour operator in Latin AmericaI always recommend this particular guide when, for instance, travelers are deeply interested in bird watching in, say , the Manu Reserve in the peruvian amazon jungle, a less well known destination when comparing to Macchu Pichu, the Nazca Lines or Senor de Sipan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Peru Reader: The best Peru travelers companion
I took this book to Peru on a trip to see the great archeological sites. I was blown awqy by the information I got from this book. Not only was I informed on so many topics but introduced to several brilliant Peruvian authors. The book was so strong I wept deeply over the history of the native peoples, I was amazed at the strength to survive under the most difficult political and cultural situations. The book was so well written that all the history and politics, not my usual reading, soaked in painlesssly, actually joyfully. I wish there were such a great book to take on every trip I go on, it enhanced my trip a million times over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hefty, in-depth anthology
Perhaps this book's overwhelming for a newcomer. But, if you have a basic knowledge of Peru already, this over 500-page collection of stories, chapters from academic books, poems, folktales, political reportage, popular journalism and interviews, and historical and anthropological coverage satisfies the need in English for a comprehensive starter for further research and reading on many topics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easily Readable But Lacking Correct Information
My wife and me chose this LP guide for our recent trip to Baja Norte. I actually enjoyed Palmerlee's writing style and his side commentaries on the Baja music scene and other topics of interest. However, there were just too many cases of inaccurate information. For example, Palmerlee says a taxi from Ensenada to La Bufadora is about $12 when actually the round trip cost given to us by numerous taxi drivers was $40. He then says (correctly) that you can save money by taking a $1 bus to the town of Maneadora. But from there, he says, you must hitchhike to La Bufadora. The truth is, as we discovered by talking to the locals, you can easily catch another $1 bus from Maneadero to La Bufadora. Thus avoiding the hitchhiking which many people, incluing my wife, would not want to try.
5-0 out of 5 stars compact and user friendly
the moon book is like reading a code many times, difficult to obtain the info you desire. the costs of rooms and cafes are in layers, $ $$ $$$ or over $25, $25-50 etc, and you never really know if it costs $25 or $50, same with meals, and it has no easy to find color map, requiring one to search thru the different sections to find a black & white map covering a large area, and then you have to try and find the area of interest.
