1-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!The "Plan 9 From Outer Space" oftravel books
This "travel book" is one of those rare items that crosses the line.It is so wretchedly bad, its really quite funny.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bizarre is an understatement
After reading some of the following reviews, let me first state the following. I am not a part of any coordinated conspiracy against the author, nor do I know the author. I do not live in Belize, have no business interests there, and have only visited once. (in 2003 for a training seminar.)
5-0 out of 5 stars The One Star Reviews Are Utterly Bogus
I own land and a house in Belize and have been involved in Belize related business for many, many years. I also have many friends all over the country, including a close friend and business partner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Helpful
I got some good tips from the book. It helped me get familar with the layout of the area. In short, the top things I learned from the book were:
4-0 out of 5 stars Frommer's Portable Puerto Vallarta
I enjoyed this guide book. It's not super comprehensive, but then it's not meant to be.The small size enabled me to slip into my pocket and carry it with me.It had enough information to guide me around Puerto Vallarta, and we tried several of the restaurants that it recommended with good results - the La Palapa restaurant was superb!I loved that place - slightly expensive, but worth it.A very romantic beach front restaurant.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tour is as Good as the Book!
I found this guide to be just what I needed to prepare for the move to Costa Rica. However, the most valuable part of the book was the information about the relocation-retirement tours the author offers. I took the tour and it change my life and convinced me to move to Costa Rica. It enabled me to make valuable contacts, meet others who had moved to Costa Ricaand provided me with information to supplement the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars All the Right Answers in Just One Book
With an eye to retirement in a tropical country, we begged, borrowed and bought a half-dozen books about relocating to the country that appeared to be the perfect choice for Americans -- Costa Rica.
5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave for Costa Rica without it!
This is the best book that I have read regarding retirement and living in this beautiful country named Costa Rica. The fact that it is updated yearly, by someone who lives in Costa Rica full time, keeps me up to date and helps me avoid potential costly mistakes. It's almost like having Christopher Howard, who wrote this fantastic guide, as a personal friend and advisor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully well-written story.
"My Father's Island" captures the sense of adventure, wonder, and fear of pioneer life on the Galapagos. The story is both humorous and tragic, and the book is compelling enough to read in one sitting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful biography and travelogue.
"My Father's Island" is absolutely delightful. The book includes a very amusing view of cultural differences as seen by young Johanna; first between America and Quito, Ecuador and then between civilized Quito and the rugged pioneer lifestyle required just a few decades ago in the Galapagos.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars kept the magic of Chile alive...
I disagree with the other reviewer's comments who felt he had to slog through the book waiting for it to payoff.I thoroughly enjoyed Sara Wheeler's writing on Chile and reccomend this book to anyone who has traveled to Chile or is contemplating a trip.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to superficial guide, depending on your interests
Having visited the Galpagos and planning my return, I can say this introductory booklet (140 pages) is a reliable for people who want an overall idea of the ecology and want to identify some of the most prominent wildlife they are likely to encounter - it is easy to understand, has good information, decent photos of the main players and illustations of the commonest landing sites. For you, this booklet rates three stars for clarity, comprehension level and lightness in your backpack, but it fails next to Andy Swash and Rob Still's more comprehensive and better illustrated "Birds, Mammals and Reptiles of the Galpagos Island". 5-0 out of 5 stars Galapagos Wildlife
I just came back from the Galapagos and found David Horwell's book indispensable. It is a very readable and concise introduction to the flora and fauna of the Galapagos islands. Beautiful photographs. Very informative. Easy to carry around and refer to. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the Galapagos islands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Travel size Galapagos
This relatively small book on the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands is packed with information and pictures. The author has gone to a great deal of trouble to condense a vast amount of data into a handbook for thetraveller, without sacrificing essential information, clarity or accuracy. Not only does it cover the wildlife that the visitor is most likely toencounter, it also gives a succinct history of the islands. Working in theGalapagos Travel Industry, and having considered many similar books forpre-trip briefing and ready reference while in the islands, this is thebook I would recommend. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money and time: Incredibly out of date
I found this book a total waste of money, starting from totally useless route descriptions with incorrect altitudes of the camps and non-existing penitentes fields featured in them and finishing with an awfully bad and old photos. Basically, one will gain more by doing search for your planned route on Google.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro, not enough about routes
This book is a good intro to Aconcagua (history, geography, etc), it helps plan a trip with good tips on preparation and local arrangements. However, it does not spend enough time describing the trails and the difficulties of each route.Even the normal route, the most popular one, is not described in depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Secor's guide. I read it before climbing Aconcagua and when I was on the mountain I felt as if I had already been there because of the accurate description in the book. The book has also good general advice on equipment, guides, weather, and acclimatization. Definitely a good companion for a wonderful adventure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful Guide
As one of the editors of Travelers' Tales 30 Days in the South Pacific, I found David Stanley's Moon Handbook, South Pacific to bean indispensible guide during a recent trip through the South Pacific
5-0 out of 5 stars Moon Handbooks South Pacific
A great value to anyone planning a trip to the South Pacific! Detailed, informative, educational...what more could anyone want.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide
Brilliant. Over the last couple of years I have become a huge fan of David Stanley guides to the South Pacific. His books have been travelling companions to Fiji and the Cook Islands and this latest edition is informative, entertaining, affectionate and honest. David has an uncanny eye for detail as well as doing 'the hard yards' for in-depth research. I lived in Vanuatu for several years and I even found that section enlightening. I plan to travel to Samoa shortly and know that I will enjoy the in-flight reading because, on my essentials to pack list, the Moon Handbook South Pacific is up there with 'toothbrush' and 'sunscreen'. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good start
Looking to find a book on "highlights" of the Yucatan? Then this is the book. When researching the next place to travel, I look for books with photos and highlights so I can see what lies ahead. This is a good book for just that ... and that only! It gave me "ideas" to further research but that is about all it is good for... a starting point.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable reference but lacking in depth!
This is quite a convenient guide fits perfectly in a pocket and easy to carry around. The book highlights the Yucatan region by listing the top 10 sights of all touristic cities in Yucatan. Besides it also lists the top 10 hotels, diving/snorkeling places, restauraunt etc. at the end. What it offers in convenience; but it lacks in depth. There is not much detail on any city; if prior reservations are not made or traveling on budget; it is best to stay away from this book. ...
