5-0 out of 5 stars A review from the Northwest Borough of Alaska
This is a must-read for anyone planning to spend time in Alaska.Jans captures the norms, customs and ways of the people in the Northwest Arctic region. This was one of my very first books when contemplating moving to Alaska. And I recently re-read the books and realized exactly how much I had missed the first time through. It has been almost two years since returning to the Arctic and I cannot believe the everyday life he captures!Read this for all it is worth and extract all you can from his words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Like Most Sequels........
My extremely low ranking is not for this book as a stand alone, its in comparison to his first, 'Last Light Breaking', which was a masterpiece.I would equate these two books with Tarantinos two films, 'Pulp Fiction' & 'Jackie Brown', the first also being a masterpiece, but the second leaving you wanting. Not that 'Jackie Brown' or 'A Place Beyond' are wastes of time, its just that compared to what came before, and the fact that they are basically the same subject matter, you expect that level of art and when you dont get it youre dissapointed as I was with this book.5-0 out of 5 stars After reading The Last Light Breaking, I was hungry for more.
A Place Beyond didn't disappoint.Jans writing style isbeautiful, simple, and eloquent. There are few authors who can weavethe reader into the story.Through all of Jans adventures, I was right there with him riding shotgun. The most underated and under publicized book(s) about Alaska.A must read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Frozen Coast
Very well written.Read from cover to cover without stopping. A tribute to the vision, research and sheer determination to succeed and overcome awesome conditions at times.Very philosophical in attitude to overcome daunting prevailing circumstances.

3-0 out of 5 stars Chilling Out
One day New Zealander Graham Charles realizes that no one else has kayaked the Artarctic Peninsula, and so he rounds up two similarly experienced Kiwi paddle pals to join him on a 528-mile voyage that is so well-planned it's almost dusty. (The fourth author, Sarah Moodie, is a journalist involved only in the writing end.) The three men write a little about each other and a little more about the trip per se (this is not a text-heavy production), each taking for himself one section of the journey. All in all there's more hard work than drama here, at least partly because their planning (exemplified by an excellent chapter on equipment) precluded the endless death-defying adventures, mishaps and show-off machismo that are all too commonly the stock of books of the into-the-void variety. In short there are some thrills--but no <cheap> thrills. The gang's greatest drama, in fact, comes when they're in someone else's hands, being ferried back to Argentina.
5-0 out of 5 stars Antarctic adventure journal with spellbinding photos
The trio of authors are New Zealanders, with Charles the photographer. With the journalist Moodie, they do a journal of their incredible kayak trip around the Antarctic Peninsula jutting out toward South America. Charles's dramatic photos shift back and forth between shots of the kayaking and camping, and the forbidding, rugged, yet entrancing Antarctic landscape. The journal records the hardships and satisfactions on the challenging trip. The section "Equipment" following the text and photos lists the varied gear and supplies needed for the trip--which list in itself testifies to the uniqueness of the physical challenge and the hardships the kayakers had to overcome by careful preparation, ingenuity, and determination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Antarctica I've read
I've been fascinated with Antarctica for some time now, and I recently acquired several books on the continent after seeing the Boston Museum of Science Omni Show, "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure." Of those books, this is clearly the best. It provides information on the geography and topography of Antarctica, a history of South Pole explorations, and information on the wildlife that populates the coasts. The pictures are far superior to any other book I've read. The writing is concise and easy to understand. It is a truly amazing book--the pictures alone are worth the cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome.
When I needed reference material on Antarctica for fact-checking my next suspense novel, I turned to this National Geographic classic. I expected the usual fare: extraordinary photography and a few pertinent bits of data. My expectations were exceeded.5-0 out of 5 stars Antarctica - The World Splendors

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Good Story Telling
Today you can look at what's going on at the South Pole by simply pointing your browser at: www.phys.unsw.edu.au/southpolediaries/webcam.html. It's hard to imagine that in 1908 Shackleton went through so much trouble trying to get there and not making it. I look at the pictures of him using pony's to pull sledges. And his boat, the Nimrod, with her sails set; you almost want to say, "are you kidding."
5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Telling of a Magnificent Expedition
Everyone has heard about Ernest Shackleton's remarkable Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, when his ship Endurance was crushed in the ice and Shackleton made his epic open-boat journey to South Georgia to help rescue his men. What most people don't know was that the first expedition Shackleton led to the Antarctic was every bit as full of derring-do and death-defying moments as his later one. Moreover, historically it was much more significant than his other ventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this one, too.
This book must be added to your collection if you are a true student of the Shackleton story. It combines the best of all the books (picture books, biographies, and personal accounts) out there with beautiful photographs in the tradition of National Geographic and the color shots truly enliven the original black and whites from the expedition. The maps are outstanding and there are reproductions of pages fromShackleton's and Hurley'sdiaries.
5-0 out of 5 stars A maxum for True Leadership: dedication with heart.
The major events of the ill-fated voyage of Sir Ernest Shakelton's attempt to cross Antarctica are well known. However, what most do not know or understand is the depth and breadth of this extraordinary man. Shackleton was not only a bonified explorer, more importantly he was a noble leader. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars After I read this book...
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Antarctica? The author lived there for four months. She wrote a book about her life in Antarctica called Antarctic Journal: Four Months at the Bottom of the World. In Antarctica she saw many animals like penguins, ice fish, whales, and elephant seals. Ice fish have special blood that won't freeze because they live in very cold water. She lived at Palmer Station on Anvers Island. While she was there she drew a lot of pictures of the animals and landscape. I learned many interesting things about Antarctica. For example; there are one hundred million penguins. No humans live there. It is five and a quarter million square miles. It's bigger than Europe. In Antarctica the sun is always shining. I think you should read this book because it has a lot of interesting information about Antarctica and a lot of pictures of animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars clever, well written, interesting
Jennifer Owings Dewey spent four months in Antarctic sketching and photographing wildlife, and writing this wonderful book about the “last great wilderness on earth.”The trip was made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation. The book jacket claims that it is appropriate for age 7 and up… well perhaps for a precocious child.I think that () has it right.Age 9 to 12 seems more appropriate.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Cook, first man to the North Pole
Excellent book and excellent adventure book.I especially enjoyed the updates provided in the book which is a reprint by the Cook Society.I am only vaguely aware of the controversy because of a friend who is invloved in high arctic camping. No matter what, Dr. Cook and his Inuit friends are cut of exceptional cloth to have endured so much, almost casually. However, I will say that Dr. Cook appears to be a more pleasant person than Admiral Peary.

5-0 out of 5 stars I believe he made it !
Although the Cook/Peary North Pole controversy still rages after over 90 years, I believe that this republication of Frederick A. Cook's My Attainment of the Pole should help immeasurably in eliminating all doubt about Cook's accomplishment.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusual blend of autobiography and adventure
This survey of the American women's expedition to Antarctica from 1992-93 is intended for teens and middle school readers but will reach into adult levels as well, providing an unusual blend of autobiography and adventure as author Bancroft and 3 others journeyed to Antarctic. Based on their journals, Four To The Pole is a fine account of their adventures and discoveries. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars England's lost colony in the Arctic.
This is an OK read about the Arctic. There are actually two stories here. The first revolves around English explorer and pirateMartin Forbisher and the second about an American Charles Francis Hall.Forbisher was searching for the northwest passage to China and found what he thought was a passage way and a black stone.Assayers felt the stone could yield a fortune in gold. The passage Forbisher found was a bay and the stone contained little in the way of precious metals.Hall searched for the survivors of an earlier Artic expedition of Franklin. He was disappointed too. What he found were the traces of Forbisher's expedition. Both explorers searched for something that was not there.
4-0 out of 5 stars Frobisher Bay: Cold War Relic YFB
I was very interested in Frobisher Air Base now Iqaluit Airport. My interest centered around the part it played in the US nuclear war plans, early warning, communications and strategic location during the 80s and 90s. First I needed to learn about the history of the area and exploration. Unknown Shore provided that first glimpse of early life and exploration. The cast of characters and the way their names became geographic locations are explained to a lesser degree though. If you like reading about remote and harsh areas of the world you will like this book. It could use a few more maps and pictures but I say that for every book I read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An unfortunately rare example of an eminently readable work of history.Ruby does an outstanding job of setting his story in the context of the times with a modern historian's insight into social and cultural history. This is far more than just another in a series of the latest vogue in Arctic exploration narratives. Through skillful use of his sources, the author brings both his European and Inuit protagonists to life. The reader is left with the haunting image of fragments of a remote Arctic island studding the landscape of a prosaic London suburb as testimony to both the folly and awe-inspiring tenacity of the sixteenth-century explorers. This is fascinating complementary reading for students of the colonization of other areas of the world. ... Read more
