2-0 out of 5 stars Strange story, but interesting...
I'm not really sure how to summarize this book. I had to read it for my intro to creative writing class, since my professor went to grad school with the author. It's about a guy named Iple, who lost his hearing and decides to go to Antarctica with a bunch of researchers. It's also about a shortstop in Brazil. And a dinosaur named Isabella who remembers everything that ever happened in the past. I don't think I would have ever picked this up on my own time, but the style was interesting to look at.
4-0 out of 5 stars good read
Fattaruso is my brother's English professor at DU, so it was through him that I heard of this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A mentally stimulating whirlwind journey
Travel In The Mouth Of The Wolf is a wryly written novel that blends elements of mysticism and even science fiction into a life-affirming journey. When a freak accident renders an easygoing young man deaf, he decides to take control of his life by traveling to Antarctica. On the way he encounters a bevy of unusual individuals. Twin little girl psychics seek to wrest control of the future of humanity's destiny, while the hidden secrets of a frozen dinosaur carcass may yet contain clues to make scientists dream. Part fable, part creation myth, always engaging and lyrical, Travel In The Mouth Of The Wolf is a mentally stimulating whirlwind journey from first page to last.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Journey
This is an excellent book for those that enjoy realistic adventure stories. It's very hard to put this book down once you start reading it.You will be both impressed and dumbfounded by the author's bravery and disregard for the dangers he faced. All in all a very compelling tale of man vs. the elements of nature.Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Amazing Adventure
I highly recommend this book for those who love true adventure stories. This is a rare and unique one. While I would not rate this book a 5-star simply on the basis of the writing, as sometimes I find descriptive language to linger too long, I must give it an overall 5 stars due to its amazing content and intriguing story of a woman who dared to follow her dreams into one of the last wildernesses remaining on Earth.Jean Aspen went where few dare to go, and she did it as a college-aged young woman. The reader is amazed at the matter-of-factness of her descriptions of pushing off of the bank into the mighty Yukon River, alone with a boyfriend and a puppy in an unweildy overladen canoe.Have they packed all the necessities to live a year alone in the Alaskan bush? Will they really be able to find a site and build a cabin before winter? Will they survive despite Aspen's own admission that there odds at making it through the winter are perhaps 50/50?And obviously, though you know they make it somehow, you constantly want to know HOW?What was it like to live through a dark deathly-cold winter on the edge of the Arctic Circle, under the Brooks Range in a cabin built by two with no outside help? What does Alaska's bush really look like? What does it FEEL like to be out there alone? What are they going to eat?How will they stay warm?Don't read ahead! This is truly an adventure few have ever lived to tell about.Descriptions of the sights, sounds and emotions are beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME true stoy!
This is an incredible adventure story written in in a very descriptive manner. It's unbelievable what we can endure if we put our minds to it.This is a MUST READ!

5-0 out of 5 stars A ture wilderness journey into the unknown
I was at a friends house when I first picked up Arctic Daughter by JeanAspen.I sat down and started to read the first few pages, two hours laterit was time to go home and I was still reading this book.My friends werekind enough to let me borrow the book and I finished it the next day.Ireturned the book to my friends and went directly to the book store andordered it.I was told it was out of print and I was very upset.I thenspent about two weeks searching to find a copy of Arctic Daughter and I waslucky enough to find a new copy.I gave it to my wife and she also read itin one day. This book takes the reader to a place that many people willnever see.The courage and spirit of true adventure in Jean Aspen prevailsin this book and it is a shame it is out of print.I would encourage anyperson who has the dream of "chucking" it all away in order tolive a life more simple to pick up a copy of this book.It is the realdeal and puts the adventurers' life in a new perspective.A must read! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Heroism in the Artic
As noted in other reviews, this is a terrific true story of adventure and survival in the far north, during the late nineteenth century.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Survival Story
I first read 'Hell on Ice' when I was a senior in high school(1954-55). I was not a very good reader and often didn't finish the assigned reading. When I started 'Hell on Ice', I could not put it down. I completed it over a week end. The story turned me on to the pleasures of a good story. After 'Hell on Ice', I read any adventure story I could get my hands on.
5-0 out of 5 stars A true exploit
I read this book about 18 years ago, so I'm going on memory. As I recall when I read it, it seemed to me the most grueling adventure (to use the word adventure is putting it mildly) that I'd ever heard of, and it still is.I've read a few books and know a few stories. This story should be in the dictionary under "survival" because, in my opinion, it epitomizes every conceivable aspect of survival. All other stories of true life adventures pale compared to this, and why Spielberg hasn't made a movie of it is probably because he hasn't heard about it and read about it.I recommend it not only as a wonderous book of adventure but also as a testament to the spirit of mankind's tenacity to overcome all obstacles and win through to the end.You won't be disappointed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Two Extraordinary Voyages In One!
"Antarctica. And along with it a desire as commanding as any sexual compulsion that Antarctica was what I wanted, and therefore I had to have it." So writes Jenny Diski in her strange, humorous and often painful memoir cum travelogue to the bottom of the world. "The Arctic would have been easier, but I had no desire to head north. I wanted white and ice for as far as the eye could see and I wanted it in the one place in the world that was uninhabited."3-0 out of 5 stars Not your stereotypical memoir
In the only 250 pages of Skating to Antarctica, Jenny Diski manages to captivate her audience with stunning anecdotes and descriptions that send the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions until the last page where it ends; plain and simple, just like it began.Behind the guise of memoir she repeatedly lectures to the reader on the value of truth and its many bastardized forms. When all is said and done, this narrative leaves you wanting more, yet glad to close the back cover.4-0 out of 5 stars White Oblivion

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at the flora/fauna of Antarctica
Very interesting reading for those with limited knowledge of what kinds of life exist in this hostile locale.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not About Antarctica
This was a disappointing read, mainly because it isn't about Antarctica, but about King George Island.Like writing a book about North America from research conducted on Cuba.Yes, Cuba is part of North America, but...If you want information on Antarctica, look elsewhere. Why he named it "Crystal Desert" is beyond me because there is NOTHING on the ice cap.Secondly, Campbell, who may or may not be a competent biologist, spends far to much time grinding his environmental axe.For some reason, he thinks he and other academicians are the only people with the right to go to Antarctica, making numerous disparaging comments about tourism throughout the text. Moreover, he seems to have a major problem with males - be they human, sperm whale, or elephant seal, espousing traits such as "machismo" and other derogatory human emotions to these animals simply because they are larger than the females. And finally, he spends the entire final third of the book expounding on the horrors of the seal and whale hunts that decimated the populations of these magnificant animals.Unfortunate, definately. But the book is supposed to be about Antarctica - not a treatise on over-sealing and over-whaling by people from another period in time.It does have some good descriptions of Admiralty Bay on King George Island - mainly from a biological perspective, but overall, it was a waste of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but the author isn't big on introspection
Since I've visited Antarctica, and enjoyed its haunting, indifferent beauty as well as the spectacular wildlife, I was interested in reading an account of someone who had lived, studied, and conducted research there.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a profounding disappointing read
Perhaps I have just been spoiled by reading truly extraordinary survival accounts like: Adrift by Stephen Callahan, Touching The Void by Joe Simspon, Into Thin Air by John Krakauer and Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing -- but this book just SUCKED. I bought it after reading the reviews and comments of other readers here at Amazon, and picked it up to read during vacation. I made it to around page 100 and started wondering when the book was going to really start hitting its stride. It never did. About 30 pages later I simply began skimming and spot reading until finally I reached the last page -- whereupon I literally pitched it in the trash.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter's Ghosts
Peter Hillary with two companions tried to replicate Robert Scott's journey to the South Pole and back, manhauling (pulling by themselves) hundreds of pounds of equipment on sleds. They almost succeeded in matching not only Scott's route but Scott's tragedy - they barely made it to the Pole and had to be airlifted out.
5-0 out of 5 stars I will never complain about being cold again!
For those of you who gave it one star, all I can say is:your little minds just didn't get it, or you really didn't read the entire book.
