5-0 out of 5 stars Good Arctic Study
This is a really good book.I think the author's ability to describe the Arctic environment and its inhabitants in glorious detail. Each chapter is devoted entirely to an Arctic creature or an environmental characteristic or to some historical context. My favorite chapter by far is "Ice and Light".In this chapter we get, I think, the most detailed description to be found on the colors of icebergs, flora, fauna, sea, and general landscape of the Arctic. In addition to that, we get an added bonus (especially for you astro-geeks out there).Lopez delves into the atmospheric phenomena that occur in and around the Arctic.I found this section to be truly amazing. The occurrence of these atmospheric effects resulted in some unique sightings by early explorers only to be later attributed to these phenomena. All in all, this is a really good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites...
My favorite book, since I was in high school, has been Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire. I never thought any book I ever read could trump the drama and emotion of that book, but Arctic Dreams is its equal, if not its superior. I do admit I am biased. This book is like a life story of a person I have been in love with for my entire life.I've read a ton of books on the Arctic, and this is one of the best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive account on wildlife too....
I especially liked his account of polar bears, harp seals and whales and their intermingling relationships. His description of how he perceived his surroundings made me feel as if I was there! In fact, it made me book a 10-day trip to Alaska in order to escape the stresses of city-living for a while! I was somewhat surprised by the chapter on Eskimos and a thorough discussion of their origin since I had expected this book to be a travelogue at best. Of course, it is much more. The chapter on Ice and Light, for instance, is outstanding and has probably the best description I have read on the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis)!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Pictorial Account of the 'Endurance'
This mammoth book is the definitive pictorial account of the voyage of Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the 'Endurance', on their death defying journey to Antarctica between 1914 and 1917 as told through the camera lens of master photographer Frank Hurley. The book is approximately twelve inches square, and can easily be mistaken for a (very large and heavy) coffee table book from afar. Once it is opened, though, it is obvious that this in no trifling work. It contains background and narrative on Shackleton and the expedition and all of the surviving Hurley photographs (almost 500 of them total) and in scope is the most complete and amazing account of the expedition I have ever seen. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was fortunate that I could follow Shakelton on T.V. while reading and viewing these excellent pictures. This book is outstanding and I would urge anyone interested in either Shakelton or photography to get it.I could not help but think that every member of this expedition had story to tell. We have heard only a few.Amazing the limits of human endurance and to think that they had a photographer with them who realized what he was filming, and did so for all of us to see.To Hurley was far ahead of his time, and I am inclined to think that Ansel Adams had probably learned from Mr. Hurley.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real treasure
This is the most defenitive retelling of Shackletons adventure in pictures. Frank Hurley was an exceptional photographer who just happened to take pictures of a journey that without them would be simply unbelievable. AnyHurleys picture of the Endurance expedition is a treasure, and in this book are all of them! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Comments on The North Pole Was Here: Puzzles and Perils at the Top of the World
While intended for a young audience this serves as a very basic introduction to Arctic exploration and scientific study. Scientific and political issues mentioned could have been a good springboard for young adults to understand that scientific methods can serve as a process to follow when trying to answer difficult questions. Additionally, it is unfortunate that Mr. Revkin did not include even a passing mention of Dr. John Rae (Fatal Passage). This is a good book to provoke discussion and does little to answer the "big" questions.Mr. Revkin also might consider using a paradigm from Paracelsus that all substances are toxic - its the dose that differentiates the poison. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing memoir
I can count on one hand the number of books that have truly and wholly transported me to another time and place. The Last Gentleman Adventurer easily joins the work of Jack London and Herman Melville in this regard, with the happy and astonishing distinction of being a true account rather than fiction. The author, Edward Maurice writes with a rare kind of insight, humane and honest. His adventures are at once breathtaking and sobering. My only regret is that this was his only book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Dawn of His Life but the Twilight of an Era
Edward Beauclerk Maurice, in his waning years, looked back on his first job, a job so distant in time and space that it might as well have been hundreds of years ago:In the 1930s, Maurice was recruited as a teenager to run one of the last fur-trading outposts in Arctic Canada operated by the Hudson Bay Company.Dropped off in a tiny Inuit village with a year's worth of trading supplies, he is meant by the Company to be both purveyor and parent to the local people.Of course, as an unexperienced teenager he had no skills for either role, and it is only through the benevolence of the villagers that he is able to cope.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age in the Arctic
"The Last Gentleman Adventurer" is a delightful, even beautiful account by Edward Maurice of his time as a young clerk for the Hudson's Bay Company in the Canadian Arctic of the 1930's.Maurice was working literally at the intersection of the Inuit and European worlds. We are most fortunate as readers that the author was unjaded, exceptionally observant, and open to the possibilities of life in that time and place.

Jon Waterman is a writer who belongs between the hardcovers. His explorations and introspection make for compelling reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Articulate Adventurer
Who was it who said, "less is more"? That's one truth that stands out in Jonathan Waterman's "Artic Crossing" - a epical solo trip of the Northwest Passage done without fanfare, without oodles of sponsorship dough. I liked the author's cool, understated writing style, the wry observations about his sufferings and about the Inuits. No hyperbole, none of self-inflation that is so common in adventure writing, this book is truly believable. A wonderful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story!
The Final Frontiersman is a fascinating story of one man's personal journey from a difficult background in Wisconsin to the freedom and challenges of life in the most remote region in the U.S.The man, Heimo Korth, unexpectedly finds romance and a life partner - and establishes a close knit family while living outside the margins of what some call "civil society."A clear and wonderfully told story which unapologetically describes how Heimo and his native spouse, Edna, live a subsistence lifestyle - primarily on freshly killed, free-ranging caribou and moose. It also describes how swiftly tragedy can strike.
5-0 out of 5 stars To the Korths
I just finished reading "The Final Frontiersman" and would recommend it to anyone. It's well-written, entertaining, and truly educational, not only about the hardships and joys of life in the Arctic bush but about the politics of Alaskan wilderness "preservation."
5-0 out of 5 stars Final Frontiersman
Most people do not understand what it is like to live in the bush, they are city people who just stay indoors most of their lives, they believe that people should not hunt or kill animals for their fur or for their meat, they read a book but dont like it becuase someone killed an animal in it, boo hoo. They are simpleminded people who dont know any better, natives and residents in Alaska do this everyday, and it most likely will no be changed for a long time, since they grew up around such things and live to do it every day. This book shows what it is really like in the Alaskan bush and if you dont like it, does it look like we care? ... Read more

This book should get an 11 and be read by every adventurer intheuniverse. It is the inspirational story of Freuchens life adventuring in and around Greenland at the turn of the century.....an amazing life, a remarkable man, a fantastic book. If you plan to read only one book in your life forget about Dosteovsky, Proust, and Shakespeare, and read this. I liked it

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great adventurers and story tellers.
Unlike many European adventurers who forced their vision upon the natives, Peter Freuchen adopted their ways.He was quite a remarkable individual. His life jumped from one life changing adventure to another. This book covers his life in the Artic, which was remarkable.Later in his life, he wrote a book which covers this material and other adventures (including Alaska, the Soviet Union) called 'Vagrant Viking'. I highly recommend that book too.5-0 out of 5 stars Arctic Adventures

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Honest
I read this book when we were in the process of finding a boat to cruise on with our 2 toddlers. I found this book to be very enlightening on the crusing lifestyle. I found it humerously written in parts when the Martins made a plan for every obstacle they faced. I laughed, I cried and I laughed and cried at the same time. I've read a lot of books catered to women out cruising and as a woman and mother I found this book to be the most interesting as it really delved into family life on board. It is the only cruising book my husband wanted to hear about - in fact I'd read to him at night and we enjoyed it together. Jaja has a positive attitude that is infectious. You find yourself almost connected to the Martin family. Other books leave you feeling depressed your not out there yet but this book leaves you feeling inspired. A very happy read and I've recommended it to a lot of people. My only regret is I loaned it to my father-in-law and, now that I'm out cruising, I'd love to read it again but I can't get it back from him!
4-0 out of 5 stars A big dose of adventure with afew drops of sanctimony.
We all love adventure books:the power and challenge of wild, the beauty of nature, the personal tests of hardship, and the strength of the human spirit. All of this and more can be found in the Marin's saga.It makes for great reading. But pervading all of this adventure and beauty is a philosophy. For some, it appears, this philosophy is enlightening, uplifting and "enriching", speaking to our desires to be free from the pathos of our modern world. For me, this philosophy of rejection by the Martins comes across a little heavy-handed, with inverted narcissism (hey, look at us, look how simple and humbly we can live), a touch of hypocrisy (ooh, let's keep our children out those American schools in North Carolina, but wow, wouldn't it be culturally uplifting to enroll them in an Icelandic and a Norwegian school), and an air of superiority.OK, OK, I'm being overly critical. We all at times seek a simpler life and I too envy the Martin's freedom, spirit and sense of adventure and this really is an enjoyable book. But hey, let's not take ourselves too seriously here.I give Into the Light 4 stars: 4 or 5 for the great adventure, and 2 or 3 for the overdose of "Martinism".

2-0 out of 5 stars Sailor"s review of this book
Being a sailor myself I bought this book with great expectation of entertainment in reading about an adventurous sailing journey.I was very disappointed. There was very little data given about the boat, its gear, and sailing tactics. The book was about what they did when they got there. The author would go on and on about people and places in Iceland and Scandanavia that you could not pronounce; yet, I still don't know what brand of Diesel engine the vessel had, its displacement or horse power.Sail plan, displacement, keel type, etc., are still a mystery. No pictures or data charts.Did a vessel really exist?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure in the Arctic
If you like an exciting adventure that you don't want to end and if you enjoy the style of writing that makes you feel you're actually there experiencing what the writer is going through you'll enjoy this book. To gain an understanding of some of the native peoples of the frozen Arctic wilderness and this unique place on earth read this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Unbridled narcissism in an arctic setting. ?Spiritual?
I could not agree more with every word of Isha Beharim's review. My first impression at the beginning of the book was of the author's extreme self absorbtion, and the impression never left me, and the self absorbtion never left the author either, despite whatever "spiritual" experience he may have had. The book, by the way, never comes within a country mile of anything even remotely spiritual, and I think perhaps the word was used in the sub-title only to improve sales, although, who knows, maybe sadly this sort of stuff passes for spirituality for this guy.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's more like a 10-star book
because it has all the things great books are supposed to have. It's exciting, honest, moving, educational, thoughtful, humorous, philosophical. You'll be different after you read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, honest narrative about life experiences
I was truly sad to finish this book.Jill is very honest about her adventures and about the frustrating and life changing times she has had in the wilderness.Even if the reader is not an outdoorsperson, he or she will enjoy the vivid descriptions of the arctic communities, the relationship between Jill and husband Doug, the struggles Jill faces in life including her mother's battle with cancer and much more.Thank you Jill for writing such a beautiful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Adventurous, Real
I just finished reading this book.I stopped part way through, because it was so good, I didn't want to finish it yet. Now, I'm going to name it as the book of the month when I host my book club next. This book is so fresh, so in-your-marrow real, so insightful, adventurous, and breathtakingly descriptive, it defies easy categorization.Ms. Fredston is a fantastic writer, and after hearing her words for the last 286 pages in my head, I sincerely would consider it a tremendous privilege and honor to meet her in person. She has sent me on a search for the woman in me who is so wise, so calm in the face of crisis, so adaptable, so loving, and so passionate about life and living it.I know I have emerged from this reading with a sincere desire to make my life what it is I desire, instead of waiting for "someday".I am thrilled to have her voice added to the voices of other women, so few, who lead us boldly into our dreams, fears, and wildest adventures. You must read this book, and if you have a daughter in high school or college, give her one as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great read
When a non-fiction book reads like a fiction book, I know I'm in for a great treat. That is, I find myself looking for little breaks during the day when I natch a page or two to read this book, I know that I have a winner. This is also written by a women who has learned a little bit about life in her winter job as a avalanche expert in Alaska, and she brings this understanding to her passion of rowing in the polar regions. It is Jill's descriptions that are a delight to the mind because they are so well written.Although, I have never seen as ice berg or an ice field, I feel that I have some greater appreciation of the beauty and harm (yes, harm) that they are capable of doing in a split second.I remember the words of some great sage, that said that getting there is what travel is all about, versus vacation when you take a jet and lay in a lounger by the pool. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It Makes You Want to Go
Alex Hall has translated his knowledge of and love for Canada's Thelon River in this excellent book.It is not a "how to" book, as the adventures he takes are not of that sort.On their own very few people could cobble together the support and equipment, and then find a survivable route given the scant mapping available.Alex's years in the North have given him the skills and connections to pull off successful trips.Alex writes an account of how he puts it all together and travels the river with groups of visitors. His love for the Barrens, the Thelon, and the North shine through and make the reader appreciate his adventures. It also makes you want to go on one with him.

3-0 out of 5 stars a passionate plea for wilderness preservation of the ANWR
The book jacket states the book is a passionate and vivid account of her trips into the ANWR, and it certainly is that.Having been in many of the same places, and even flown with some of the same people, I can make an immediate connection with her book. This book is a first person account, not a naturalist documentation. Some of her trials and tribulations make for very interesting reading, and makes one glad sometimes that they did not have to trek in some of the places. Her account of some of her hiking in the rugged Romanzof mountains sent chills up my spine.A weakness perhaps is after almost each description, she states what is at risk by allowing drilling.Sometimes that gets in the way of the journey. However, the last section of the book outlines the history of the preservation attempts, and the very real dangers of oil development to such an unspoiled wilderness. This book is a personal account and not a detail as to the intricate inter-relationships among the flora and fauna, and it was not meant to be.I enjoyed the book for what it is, and that is a personal story.I wished she had described in a bit more detail her time in the arctic when the colors started to appear as fall approached.Having been along the Jago River in the 1002 lands at the height of the fall colors, it is something that cannot be imagined in advance. One can never believe such a landscape of apparent green can take on so many colors.A perfect companion book to this would be that of E. C. Pielou, A Naturalists Guide to the Arctic. With Pielou's book, one can gain a fuller understanding of the tricks of light in the arctic, and the interdependency of the animals with the plantlife.Oil company executives will not like this book. Most others will enjoy reading her accounts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Journey into ANWR
I love Debbie Miller's book Midnight Wilderness about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Her journal writings, with detailed land references, eloquently paint a portrait of this pristine area and how unique and beautiful this remote land is. I enjoyed reading about all the animals and birds that live and migrate there every year, and about the people who depend on this area. This book educates us on the oil development controversy and why it is vital we continue to fight in protecting this special land for now and future generations. This book is truly the ultimate reference book for the Arctic Refuge and I highly recommend it to all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Account of Wilderness Adventure
Debbie Miller draws from her journal and from her heart as she recounts her explorations of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the last great wilderness area left in the United States.Few people have actually stepped foot on this northeast corner of Alaska, but by reading the words of Miller, one can be transported to this rare and magical place. The book, written primarily during the 1980s and updated in the current edition, is informative and inspiring. She effectively intersperses relevant historical and scientific facts with her own personal observations and love for the region. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A scholarly work
Historian David Yelverton takes a long overdue look at Scott's Discovery expedition, the first significant attempt to probe the interior of that great southern continent. He pays great attention to Scott's difficulties in securing funds, crew, supplies and so forth. And, of course, Yelverton writes at length on the Discovery herself, an leaky craft that would have never made it south were it not for the constant struggle at the pumps. There is also a good deal on the cooperative effort with the Germans (!) on making often difficult magnetic observations, one of the principal reasons for the expedition in the first place.4-0 out of 5 stars A less negative look at Scott's first expedition
Recent writings on Antarctic exploration have not been kind to Scott's leadership. If you're interested in a different look at the man (to some degree) and the first (Discovery) expedition try this book. The author gives one a sense of life on the expedition and takes one along through daily life on the ship, over the winter and on the sledging journies. Heavy on detail and a bit too focused on 'righting the wrongs' of Huntford, etc., the result seems an extremely well-researched view of the scientific goals and results of the expedition. (And, perhaps the author can be forgiven for the emphasis on righting wrongs--previous works have certainly emphasized contrary views.)I've long felt that viewing the turn-of-the-century expeditions through today's 'lens' is problematic. Scott and the others were English men of their time and subject to those values, just as we are products of our time.I recommend the work to those interested in a detailed view of that first expedition, how its course affected the Terra Nova expedition, and a different view of the explorers and the expedition--placed in their time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Alaska by an Alaskan
Many of the best-known books about Alaska, its people and wilderness, have been written from an outsider's perspective (John McPhee, for example, or Joe McGinniss), with an outsider's sense of detachment and strangeness, as though what they were commenting on were just slightly odd on some level.5-0 out of 5 stars "My sense of wilderness is personal" - Margaret E. Murie
Mardy Murie is often referred to as "The Grandmother of American Conservation" and "The Grand Dame of the American Conservation movement, but somehow after reading her story, these titles barely seem adequate to describe such an incredible and personal woman. While we may liken Murie to women like Rachel Carson or Anna Botsford Comstock, Murie's journey is singular. We follow her from her childhood in Wyoming to graduation at the University of Alaska, through love, into the far reaches of the Alaskan North. 5-0 out of 5 stars "And I see them dancing....."
I, first, heard of Mardy Murie and her husband, Olaus, while watching John Denver's The Wildlife Concert. He wrote A Song For All Lovers for their deep and abiding love for each other and for the state of Alaska. The song's beauty gave rise to my curiousity. And, recently, while watching a documentary of Mardy's life, I became determined to read this book about her life.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read...
God this book was amazing. It took me months to read because it was so dense with information and I kept gaping at the pictures, but it was worth it. The best thing about Frozen in Time was that the anthropologists that excavated the bodies were so emotional about it. The whole book, despite being a scientific account, is so incredibly creepy. One of the creepiest books I have ever read. The contents of this book completely permeated my brain, even after I finished reading the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping and Insightful
I got this book for my birthday this past year and I couldn't put it down once I started reading it.It is a well written account not only of the fate of the Franklin Expedition, but also of the difficulties and many hardships faced by many of the Arctic Explorers of the time.It details the many problems that faced the various crews prior to Franklin's fated expedition and those of the many crews that searched for those 128 men.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent research team and analysis
Having had the luxury of actually communicating with Dr. Beattie and his team of their work, I can attest that they carried out their project professionally and with dignity. This is in contrast to many who tried or will try to answer the fate of the 129 (this field of research is ripe with many egos fighting for turf over which theory of their demise is correct, and the "glory" of finding that "holy grail" -- either Franklin's grave or his log books).
