Editorial Review

Prepare to have some of your greatest fears laid bare in this collection of riveting, and often terrifying, "cautionary tales from the limits of human endurance." Based on interviews with accident survivors and the medical specialists who treat them, veteran outdoor writer Peter Stark offers mostly fictitious accounts (there is one based on a true historical incident) of people caught in life-threatening situations. 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing work
This book is one of the best I've read in a long time.To the first reviewer, he clearly didn't understand this book, as is shown by the following reviews.5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Non-Fiction
I first read a chapter of this book in paddler magazine and the way Peter Stark described the drowning of a kayaker (Chapter 2: A River of One's Own)in detail right down to the amounts of oxygen remaining in his lungs at various periods of time. The entire book is written as en ewcellent blend of fact and fiction and while the scenarios are not true they are composites of true stories, and some of Stark's imagination, which gives them a realism that pure fiction can't match. The facts Stark gives are sound, he obviously did his homework and he even gives a bibliography so you can check out some of his sources.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get outside. ... If you think of your pet as a family member, it only follows that Fluffy should come along on family vacations. 4-0 out of 5 stars Reliable guide for pet-friendly lodging
Just put this newly purchased guide to the test during a trip through parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas with our 60-pound dog.The hotel and motel listings are very accurate and up-to-date, so we had few surprises when calling to book rooms or arriving at properties. The only improvements I would suggest are more recommendations for outdoor dog play places (especially those that are leash-free) and for restaurants with outdoor dining areas that permit dogs.We had fairly good success improvising leash-free play zones in national forest areas off the highways and were able to find some eating places with patios or decks that permitted dogs...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage for pet friendly places
We are on our 3rd annual Traveling With Your Pet (8th ED.). We do quite a bit of traveling with our Miniature Austrailian Shepherd. This book is the best resource we have found for traveling with pets. The book has the usual AAA ratings for places, along with details of pet policies for each place. We have tested our book against several online sites, and although you may occasionally find a different place online which is not in this book, overall the book is the most thorough of all resources we have seen.
2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but limited selection
Over the past several years, I've use the AAA guide, but found that since it only lists AAA motels, I miss a lot of good places to stay.I now prefer The Pet Travel and Fun Authority, since it has twice as many listings and also entire chapters on things to do with your pet when traveling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
"The Global Citizen" is a MUST READ for anyone seeking to establish an international lifestyle. I especially liked the sections that allowed real people who've moved abroad the opportunity to write about their experiences. These "journal entries" gave me a lot of inspiration. The book is loaded with program information for study, voluteering and work abroad. There is a chapter on financing your journeys which offers information about scholarships and grants that I didn't even know existed! I highly recommend "The Global Citizen" for anyone serious about going abroad short-term or long-term.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory value, poor on details
If you are under 20, not sure what to do with your life and contemplating about how cool it is to travel to Europe and save the rain forests - this book is perfect for you (even better if you want to save rain forests in Europe). Then, if you are not from US, don't have kickass amount of money to spend or know exactly what you want - bypass this title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book!
This book is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone! The author writes on a personal level like she is talking to you and it is also written from a emotional level so it is easy to understand. This book gets you excited about all the possibilities and the author explains any fears you may have and how you can get over them and overall she gets the word across to never give up!She also gives e-mail adresses from other people who have experience travel. This is a great book, everyone can benefit from this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars magnifique!
Tres amusant. I enjoyed using this book to explore the most beautiful city in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great walks with amazing details`
I used this book for my recent trip to Paris.Out of all the walks we took my favorites were martmartre and le marais.I photocopied all the walks I wanted to take prior to the trip so I didn't have to carry the book everywhere and the map and words are in larger print this way.My boyfriend is a great navigator but I think combining the narrative with the map most people should have no problem following the route. We did have to retrace our steps a couple times but it really was pretty simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide!
Having been to Paris many, many times, I pretty much know my way around. I purchased this book for my last trip, to help my friend -a first time parisian- find her way around. Surprisingly, though, it was me who ended up enjoying the book the most. Very well-thought walks, easy to spot places and landmarks but thorough and interesting enough to take you off the beaten path and show you the real Paris, the charming, lively city beyond the tourist attractions. My favourite walks are Faubourg St-Germain and St-Germain-des-Pres and the ones through the Latin Quarter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars gorgeous illustrations, info. you won't find anywhere else
This has got to be the single best guide to Antarctica's unusual wildlife. Everything is covered here, from Gentoo Penguins to Crab-Eater Seals (which don't actually eat crabs). Beautiful illustrations make it easy to identify birds & other animals while your out on the ice. If you're going to the White Continent, you'll want to stash this little book in your daypack. This book was useful when my husband & I visited the Antarctic peninsula, which we chronicle in our DVD "T&T's Real Travels in Antarctica" (also available on amazon.com).

5-0 out of 5 stars A handbook essential for any Antarctica-bound traveler
The price tag may seem steep for the fourth edition of this 144-page paperback - but where else are you going to find details on the wildlife of Antarctica, tailored as a take-along tote for the Antarctica-bound traveler? Color drawings by Dafila Scott accompany nature history descriptions of each creature and discussions of identification specific to Antarctica, from contending with visibility factors to seasonal identification features. Antarctica: A Guide To The Wildlife is a unique and strongly recommended "take-along" handbook essential for any Antarctica-bound traveler.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, portable guide
I bought this book in preparation for a trip 'South' in December 1999/January 2000 and it was an extremely useful guide to wildlife in general but especially good for penguin information. The drawings by an ancestor of Robert F. Scott's are lifelike, and engaging art as well. The brief summaries of natural and exploration history are accessible and informative. If you are looking for a portable guide to peninsular wildlife get the book--you won't regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for getting you started in hiking California
I hiked 5 trails from this book so far, and all of them have been spectacular. The rating and description of the trails are very accurate. I'm currently in the process of planning more hikes from this book. My only complaint is that the map of all the hikes does not contain and road information, so it was a bit of a pain to try to place where exactly the hike is. We were in Yosemite this past weekend, and had to cross reference the trail map to our road map to determine if the trail was nearby yosemite or inside. Other than that, the hikes were great (in the bay area and the sierra nevada). I'm thinking about buying a couple of falcon guide specific to certain places. If you just getting into hiking, I would definitely recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Genuinely "all-family" must-have guidebook
The payoff for reading Cynthia Harriman's "Take Your Kids to Europe" carefully is tremendous. We have a five-week trip to Europe coming up and our copy if already getting dog-eared from overreading. This guidebook is different and better. Most "what to do with the kids overseas" books are filled with things you already instinctively knew - i.e. your kid will like Legoland and here is how to get there and the hours it's open. Harriman's guide acknowledges there is more to a successful family trip than just picking the right things to see, and she uses the reactions of her own actual kids to back up her suggestions. For example, she is a master of managing family dynamics on a trip. Here are a few of her suggestions:

Dan O'Neill drops his canoe into the Yukon River near Dawson City (Canada) and paddles downriver in search of the Alaskan homesteader and the subsistence lifestyle familiar to many from John McPhee's book, "Coming Into the Country."
5-0 out of 5 stars Like Coming Into the Country Part 2
It seems that ever since John McPhee's Coming into the Country came out in the seventies, all stories of living in the Alaskan wilderness are compared to it.This book in many ways revisits that book and lets you know what happened to the self sufficient trappers and homesteaders that McPhee met in the seventies. And apparently they are gone.

I still haven't had a chance to use the tips from this book, since our trip to Greece with our one-year-old is planned for a few months from now. very helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the LOCAL Idaho/Montana/Wyoming Regular
I live about 90 miles from Jackson and 100 from West Yellowstone, so I go to both parks a lot.As a teacher, I have my summers to go camp and hike from time to time, and I just got back from a trip today. While at Lake Hotel, I chanced on this book, and bought it.This was yesterday. The book has 45 different trails in it to hike in Yellowstone and the Tetons (though most are in Yellowstone).I went ahead and hiked one yesterday (Elephant Back) and got a great view of Yellowstone Lake. The directions were very clear and there were guide-points along the route in the book so I knew just where I was.The book even mentioned this is Grizzly habitat in the spring/early summer, and sure enough, when I got down from the hike, there was a bear. This kind of information could be a lifesaver to the inexperienced Yellowstone or Teton hiker.Today, I hiked two more hikes in the book, one short one at West Thumb and a longer one at Biscuit Basin up to a waterfall and overlook. This book is very easy to use, has great maps, grades the difficulty of each hike, and has a variety from hikes under a mile to hikes of over twenty that take several days.My goal, using this excellent book, is to hike them all in a year or so.Great photos, durable cover, great maps. This is the perfect book for locals or for tourists who come often or who are planning a two to three week stay.I would not think it would be good for someone visiting for a day or two, as you could not scratch the surface of this gold mine of information. Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yaoi!!!! Love it to pieces!!!!
This is one of the first mangas I ever read (I got it from my friend) and now I'm collecting the series myself because I couldn't get enough. The characters seem so real, and relationship fits together like puzzle pieces. If you are into yaoi, or even if you're not, this is an awesome book/series and I reccomend it to anyone who enjoys anime. The only thing I don't like about the books is that they needed to continue forever or at least until Dee proposed to Ryo and they got married and adopted a kid (which Ryo already has, practically). That is when I would agree that the series needed to come to a close.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Manga Series Out There!
This is my all time favorite series - even though it's only Shonen Ai it is the greatest Manga Series out there. The art is great and the story is funny and sweet in a lot of places, especially when it reveals how much the two main characters care for one another. It focuses on Dee Laytner and his persistence to get into the pants of his new partner Ryo Maclean, your average uke not knowing what to make of Dee's advances and Dee isn't the only one after Ryo, their new boss Berkley Rose is and Dee has his own admirers including one hyperactive jealous JJ, who hates Ryo. This is a must have series for any Yaoi or Shonen Ai Fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Manga review from the experienced
I couldn't help but grin while reading this volume. The story just keeps getting better as the series progresses. If you liked volumes 1 and 2, then you'll love this one. There are few comedy manga titles out there, even less that are the same humor wave-length as me. This one is right on target. I plan to get the rest of the series. Great manga!

1-0 out of 5 stars Some good info, but basically outdated
I'm in the process of planning a wedding in Jamaica and was hoping for some suggestions. The basics are covered in the book but it is from 1995.It suggests going to the library and travel agents for help and brouchures. It would have been nice if it mentioned the internet at all.It is geared toward inexperienced travelers. Overall I wouldn't recommend it only because the information can be found through any wedding site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Summary
I was very fortunate to see Michael Dweck's exhibition "The Surfers Life" here at the renown Blitz Gallery in Tokyo last week and I was very impressed. The show was an astonishingly beautiful collection of images by a very gifted photographer who presents his subject with great sensitivity and warmth. And, though many of these images have been seen before in his book The End:Montauk, NY", it was worth a trip to Blitz to see the show live.
1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money
The book's title is, "The End."Let's hope that it is just that...the last of a sorry attempt of portrayal to nowhere. We don't need anymore of this crap shoved on us via a misleading cover photo on a dust jacket solely designed to sell a bad product. Most amazon.com people probably did purchase this book because of the nude surfer chick on the front cover. This is as good as it gets.
1-0 out of 5 stars this book sucks
anyone who is from montauk or the hamptons will this this book is lame. number one the photography is bad. number 2 this guy knows nothing about the area. He rented a house at ditch for 1 summer? big friggin deal. The only bright spot in the book is his choice of models, who he photographed badly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Save Yourself Alot of Money
Here's a great way to feel better about getting older. You can save alot of money with the tips in this book. Some you may already know about but there's bound to be many you haven't heard of before.I am a legal aid attorney and owner of an online medical supply and equipment business and would recommend this book to my clients and customers.Of course, with any book like this, information can quickly become outdated so calling first is a good idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for road trippers too!
If you are going on an extended road trip, this book is a "must have" on your list.Whether you are traveling by auto or RV, staying in campgrounds or motels, eating in or eating out, this book has something for you.It would make a great companion to the ultimate road trip planning book, "Live Your Road Trip Dream".

3-0 out of 5 stars From a Californian: don't buy it
I'm a Californian, and know several cities reviewed by this guide very well. While I love Lonely Planet guides, I cannot recommend this book after spending an hour looking through it one day at a Borders. (We were headed so San Francisco and I needed a good CA guidebook.)
4-0 out of 5 stars A great guide, also for abroad tourists
This guide is a very well-written and inspiring guide to California - also for non-US tourists. It maintains a fine balance between background infomation and suggestions for sights, locations and places to stay and eat worth visisting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!
This is a fantastic book. I read it from cover to cover, even though I didn't go to every place in California. The information was relevant, and it was handy to have the book with me as I travelled about.
