5 for the Book, 3 for the Shipping
Like the other reviewer, my book was improperly shipped, this time in a box too large so it sloshed around on its journey, getting dinged in the process.
Beautiful book, inadequately packed
This is a magnificent book, with unique photgographs of sea creatures on white backgrounds. It would have made a splendid gift, except for the unfortunate fact that it was shipped in a box hardly bigger than itself and had obviously been dropped and crushed. Every page was dented, but it was too late to return it and get a new copy. One wonders why tiny objects are so often shipped in a box many times larger than themselves, but books like this one are tossed casually into the mail with no real protection at all.

Another exceptional collection of images and information
Such beautiful work is a treasure and an education all at once. It's a rare treat to be able to see in such intimate detail those creatures who have lived and may perish without our ever having known them except for the work done here.This book, and the entire body of the Liittschwager/Middleton collaboration is a must-have for every conservationist, every school. ... Lonely Planet- not with this many package tourists.
"Nobody touches the Lonely Planet for budget travel advice," states the back cover of this book.
Great to read but difficult to do so due toVERY SMALL print.
I really like the Lonely Planet guides, and this one is very good regarding the amount of information it contains. My main complaint is the size of the type. Not only is it very small and difficult to read even with glasses on, but the paper is very thin so the words from the reverse page show through. I'd rather pay a couple of extra dollars and have higher quality paper. I also agree with other reviewers who felt that the Indonesia chapter could easily be eliminated, partly because it is difficult to due justice to that widespread country in a chapter.

typical shoestring guide
This guide is really good value, although you notice easily that it covers a lot of countries. South East Asia is big, the book is limited in size and therefore detail is missing. I bought seperate guides for Laos and Cambodia and this benifited my trip greatly.

Excellent Book, Beautiful Photos
This book should be on everyone's coffee table and in every school library. The many beautiful full-color photos will inspire even the most reclusive to pack that suitcase and go! Very inspiring photographs.

1001 Natural Wonders : You must see before you die
We found the facinating, with places we never knew existed. An atlas of we you would love to go. Presentaion and place descriptions are first class.

The coffee table book for armchair travellers
I love to travel and thus peruse lots of books to explore and plan my future trips. I liked "1000 places to see before you die" as it did decent job in describing places worth visiting in all countries and continents. This book is a very weak copycat.

Binding Fell Apart
I noticed the review that said this book was worthy of "permanent display on your coffee table."Well, I don't think that will be possible with my book, as the binding fell apart after 6 months.The book has gotten a fair amount of use, but nothing out of the ordinary.I've since seen a similar problem with a couple of the display copies at bookstores (which is why they've been demoted to display copies).So I don't think this is an isolated problem.It seems like the book is so big that they didn't make a strong enough binding for it.So just a warning for this thinking of buying this book.The good news is that, on the advice of one of the reviews, I bought Colorado: Yesterday & Today to replace my copy of Colorado: 1870-2000.I agree that it is the better book and now it will be on permanent display on my coffe-table.

Worthy of permanent display on a coffee table
This book is excellent in look, feel, and quality.It is intriguing to see how much landscape has changed in 130 years.Many times for the better and many times for the worse.In every case it is very interesting to see two pictures side by side and compare 1870 with 2000.The photographer was very meticulous to capture every shot as closely as possible to the original perspective and frame, which really enhances the "then and now" feel of the book.

Clearing Up the Confusion and Getting the Photo Details
There appears to be some confusion as all of the reviews of the original "Colorado 1870-2000" big book are credited to this, the paperback "Colorado 1870-2000 Revisited: The History Behind the Images".This book is a companion book to the original.It takes each photo set from the big book and goes into detail about the location, changes, and how Fielder acquired each photo. These are the things that, being left out of the original, made several people give the big book negative reviews.While it would have been nice (and certainly less expensive) to have everything in one volume, we now have the information for which those disappointed with the big book were looking.While the big book is a piece of coffee table art, the Revisited book fits neatly on your bookshelf, ready to be taken down to answer those questions posed by your friends perusing the big book.I take a bit of offense at having to have paid for two different books, but they belong together and I feel were money well spent; the big book for the beautiful photos and the revisited book for its entertaining and educational material. ... Make that 3 1/2 stars
Actually, I would have given "Making Your Move" 4 stars had I found the descriptions of the individual towns more interesting.But, what I did find was a witty style of writing, some laugh-out-loud moments, and some very down-to-earth advice on the pearls and perils of small-town life.One might apply Norm's smart and insightful guidelines to just about any sparsely populated area in the quest for new habitation.So even though his selections failed to fire me up, they did make me realize that I may not be cut out for small-town living after all.And that, in itself, is worth far more than the price of a book.Thanks, Norm, and make that four stars.
Part of the story
This book is a good place to start if you're thinking of moving to a town of 15,000 or less. It will point you to many interesting communities. However, having used his previous book to guide my last move, and as a resident of one of the towns highlighted in this book (Grinnell), I can honestly say that data only carries you so far. Crampton could provide readers with a great benefit by lengthening the amount of description and flavor for each town. In particular, one key element missing is the 'dynamic' of a town: is it progressive? conservative? excited about education? quick to vote down taxes and bonds? These elements form the 'culture' of a small town, and believe me, the culture of a small town will be *very* important to you!

Engaging Style
This book shows people solving ecological problems as a community.Weisman engages the reader by showing the people involved, not only the ones with training in certain disciplines, but also natives with practical solutions for living in a Columbian village. Even the children got involved in problem solving in Gaviotos.
Not DIY
The vision described in the book is inspiring and very hopeful.The idea is to use our ingenuity in ways directly adapted to our environment so that small towns can be self-sufficient.Along the way, very clever uses of wind and water are discovered and described.If the reader is looking for great general ideas or approaches, this book would be hard to beat.On the other hand, if you are a garage-tinkerer and would delight in building the clever devices described, this book is close but no cigar.The drawings offered in the book purposely omit the most important details required to fabricate the devices in a proper working form.If you are a tinkerer and want to build these "goodies," you have three options.In the U.S., you can e-mail with the "Sustainable Village" web site and get the plans (eventually---they are not quick in responding).You can contact the Gaviotas offices in Bogota, Colombia.You can, of course, also take the basic idea and think through the details for yourself.That could take longer and be a little more expensive---perhaps. If you primarily want the ideas and the inspiration, then buy the book, by all means.If you primarily want to tinker and build, go straight for the plans.

In 1998, journalist Alan Weisman collected and presented information about a little known, yet quite monumental, village known as Gaviotas. To get there, one must travel 16 hours by car from the nearest major Columbian city, Bogot�. Even then the path there is not a smooth one; rough, muddy roads and severe political unrest serve as some major barriers in getting to Gaviotas. So why then is such an arduous trip worth it; in essence, Gaviotas is yet another tiny village located in a generally uninhabitable region and possesses none of the modern modes of transportation or communication that we are accustomed to. While in a sense these aspects may be true of Gaviotas, it is also undeniable that this community holds as one of the most efficient, supportive, and thoughtful communities on the planet.

Great for cross state travel
While the book does not cover every trail in every area, it is a good resource for traveling around the state to many different areas. There are more detailed books for a certain area, but if you need a book that covers the state, this is a great resource. We traveled all over N Cal. with kids in the summer with some unexpected changes in route. We seemed to always find a nice hike in this book and a good campground in its companion book (Campgrounds of California?).

The ONE BOOK you need to hike, backpack, or walk California (at any skill level)
Even in the age of the Internet, these is no other resource as comprehensive and user-friendly as the Foghorn Outdoors California Hiking guide. In fact, this resource transcends the paper-and-ink category by incorporating indexes and cross-references that beat hyper-links any day. The book is prefaced with a California state map broken out into grids. Chapters of the book correspond to grid locations, and each chapter opens with an expanded map of the grid at hand. If, for example, you were looking at the Lancaster/Palmdale area in Chapter/Grid, and you noted that your area of interest was just north of this particular map, you follow the North arrow out of the map, which points the reader to page 596. If you want general areas for perusal, you can turn to the sections that comprise Northern California, Central California, or Southern California areas. If you know your geographic region of interest, it is a snap to locate it on the main state map and find the corresponding chapter. For those following the Pacific Crest Trail, a special index and symbol tracks the hikes which make up the overall trail, and guidance is provided about the general direction (south to north) that the trail is hiked.
Own it, Own others. Don' t buy it. Here's why.
I ordered this book, used it, and I had to return it. Imagine you work for big guidebook company (Foghorn Outdoors) and your boss gives you, say 3 months, to write an 800 page book with a stupid gimmick like it has "1000 Hikes of California"

Brilliant Set of Photographs
A photographer with the eye of an artist, Tim Palmer has spent a lifetime photographing rivers. He has gone to extremes to get just the right view, at the right time of day, the right time of the year. He has combines these photographs with prose that is almost poetic to add in our understanding of what he sees, what he feels.

Colorado
This item was purchased as a gift for another family member.We already own a copy, purchased from a source other than Amazon.

A lovely companion volume
For those who enjoyed the first volume, Volume II is a lovely companion book. In an interview, John Fielder explained that he could only put so many photos in the first volume, but going back through the hundreds of pictures that didn't make it in, he realized there were many more that were just as deserving to be published. I'm thrilled to include this book in my collection and highly recommend it for Colorado history lovers.

Ignore the Media Hype
As a Colorado history buff, I'm a little annoyed at all the hype the media has given the Fielder-Jackson project.The fact of the matter is Fielder's project is in no way original or ground-breaking.Several other photographers have quietly done similar projects over the years.The first that I know of to publish a then-and-now book on Colorado was Robert L. Brown, who published a series of such books in the 1960s.The first person to start work on a then-and-now book in modern times was Grant Collier, who reshot the images of his great-great grandfather, Joseph Collier.Joshua Dinar has also done a book called "Denver: Then & Now" and there have been a number of other regional Colorado books with a similar theme done over the years.Of these books, "Colorado: Yesterday & Today" by Grant Collier is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the best.It is significantly more interesting because he reshot the images of his great-great grandfather.Collier also did the best job of finding the exact spots where the historic photos were taken and he provided a lot more historical text and insight than any of the other modern books.The next best modern book is probably Fielder's "Colorado 1870-2000," in part because of the impressive size of the book.After this, I would put "Denver: Then & Now," followed by "Colorado: 1870-2000 II".I rank this book last because it consists only of the rejects from his first book.So while the book was released in 2005, the modern photos in it were taken back in 1998.The photos in this book were rejected from the first book for a reason.They are not as historically interesting as those in the first book and Fielder didn't do a great job of precisely re-shooting the images.So unless you own all of the other books listed above, I don't see any reason to buy this book.I do also recommend Robert L. Brown's books, but since the "modern" photos in his books were taken in the 1960s, they are obviously a little outdated.But the books provide interesting insight into two past time-periods, and they also provide a lot of historical text on each of the towns in the book.

Spectacular Houses in a Spectacular Setting
Go north of San Francisco along the coast for a hundred miles or so. Buy 4,000 acres of timber and grazing land. You'll find that you have quite a setting for a housing development. Add rules that say how the house must fit into the land and the scenery and you have quite a housing development in quite a setting. Beginning in 1963 this is just what happened. And over the resulting 40 years quite a stunning set of houses has been built there.
Fine house-by-house considerations of design
Essays by Donald Canty and Lawrence Halprin accompany beautiful black and white and color shots of California's architectural wonders of the coast which comprise the exclusive Sea Ranch community of homes. Ecologically inspired planning and innovative architectural dreams and designs went into the formation of the California's Sea Ranch community, which sprawls across several thousand acres of land. This could easily have been a picture presentation alone, but the fine house-by-house considerations of design, plan, and history makes it much more, and The Sea Ranch will be revered by architectural reference collections in art libraries. ... As important as Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring"
This book has been a walk in the park. Almost literally.Needing nothing more technological than sunlight and, for some of us, a pair of spectacles, reading "Return to Wild America" is the closest thing to "being there."Mr. Weidensaul's prose carries us over the rivers and through the woods.His descriptions allow us to see, hear, feel and occasionally smell the magnificence of nature. It is a wonderful and elating trip.For birders, I am sure that there is the added bonus of familiarity with the beautiful birds that I have just met.
A Reprise of a Famous Naturalists' Journey
I read Peterson's and Fisher's "Wild America" in 1955 when it first was published.My father belonged to a book club and this book was the primary selection one month. It was an enchanting read and it strengthened my interest in all of the biota of North America, although I eventually became a professional biologist specializing in invertebrates.
You Just Have to Know Where to Look
Scott Weidensaul deserves recognition as one of the best naturalist writers working today. Here, Weidensaul follows in the cross-continental footsteps of Roger Peterson (the bird guide guy) and James Fisher, who in the early 1950s wrote about their bird watching journey across North America and created the environmentalist classic "Wild America." Weidensaul is also a bird fanatic, reporting on the astonishing variety of avifauna he encountered while tracing the footsteps of Peterson and Fisher, but he also imparts great amounts of knowledge on all other forms of wildlife as well as larger issues of ecosystem health. Weidensaul certainly finds that many of the natural areas visited by Peterson and Fisher fifty years previously are in worse shape nowadays, with encroaching development and pollution, and great decreases in plant and animal populations. The most distressing example here is the continuing ecological disaster taking place in the Florida Everglades, while the state of nature in several of the other areas covered is barely heartening.

It Makes You Want to Go
Alex Hall has translated his knowledge of and love for Canada's Thelon River in this excellent book.It is not a "how to" book, as the adventures he takes are not of that sort.On their own very few people could cobble together the support and equipment, and then find a survivable route given the scant mapping available.Alex's years in the North have given him the skills and connections to pull off successful trips.Alex writes an account of how he puts it all together and travels the river with groups of visitors.His love for the Barrens, the Thelon, and the North shine through and make the reader appreciate his adventures.It also makes you want to go on one with him.

Florida's gems
This book is a must for every Flordian and Florda visitor who wants to explore the "inside" of a fascinating state. The authors provide a short, but very interesting summary of the geography and geology of the state as well as of the biology of plants and animals and their habitat. Read more
