Here's a great way to feel better about getting older. You can save alot of money with the tips in this book. Some you may already know about but there's bound to be many you haven't heard of before.I am a legal aid attorney and owner of an online medical supply and equipment business and would recommend this book to my clients and customers.Of course, with any book like this, information can quickly become outdated so calling first is a good idea.

Editorial Review

When the joints start to ache, the salary dwindles, and freedom is yours at last, it's time to reflect upon where you'd like to spend your retirement years. Your obligations are few and the world is your oyster. If you're approaching those golden years, John Howell's guide to retirement living is a boon. It's not about retirement communities, it's about the towns and cities of the United States--what they offer the senior citizen in terms of recreation, culture, health care, and lifestyle; what to expect from their weather; and how much it costs to live in them. Howells investigates the relative tax burdens of each state, looking at property taxes, sales taxes, and whether each taxes pensions and Social Security. He also ranks the cost of living for housing, groceries, and utilities; provides the daily high and low temperatures; and lists the amounts of rain and snowfall across the seasons. From Georgia's Valdosta (population 40,000 and nicknamed "Azalea City") to Washington's Bellingham (18 miles from Canada, views of the San Juan Islands to the west and Mount Baker to the east), Howells paints portraits of more than 150 communities and their surroundings. Doubling as a guide for exploratory vacations and a pointer for anyone looking for a better place to live, Howells's research answers all the relevant questions. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid primer - sorting out the best places
I took `Where to Retire' with me (along with several good State guides - like Fodor's) when I went on a sixteen day journey through three Southwestern States(Nevada, Arizona & New Mexico) where I was looking for "the place"to relocate and semi-retire.Howells' guide gave me a `leg up' onthe destinations that were `definite maybes'.The guide was extremely valuable in leading me to destinations I would not have considered without the guide.(Las Cruces and Ruidoso in New Mexico and Bisbee and Ajo in Arizona).3-0 out of 5 stars Good for those starting out
If basing a review on the 3rd or 4th editions is a disqualifier, perhaps I should recuse myself. Let me just say that I read Mr. Howells' 3rd edition when I just began looking for places, and I found it immensely helpful: worth five stars. The short, easy readings are enjoyable and make this volume a nice addition to the bedside table. The 4th edition contained a few updates. However, for the reader who has already narrowed the options, Where to Retire does not offer the detailed, substantive material one might wish for in order to refine those options.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with information presented
I have read several retirement books dealing with various subjects about what to consider when retiring.Although I am about 1/2 way through this book, I am a little surprised and quite happy with the information so far.I liked the author's "at a glance" tax breakdown tables, and in several cases he asked questions and stated perspectives that I had not thought about before (and as I said, I have read other retirement books).Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Good Deals & Great Adventures Over 50
My book club had this book on special so I decided to see if I could get it from Amazon cheaper. BOY, am I glad I did! I certainly would not recommend it. I was highly disappointed because there wasn't much for any one under 60 (62 is more like it).Every "deal" she listed is common knowledge. I gave it two stars only because some of the organizations listed...is worth checking out.But now you have the number so save your money for a really good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique perspectives for "agility challenged" travelers to Southwestern Ireland
The second title in the unique 'Creaky Traveler' series, "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland, Clare, Kerry, and West Cork: A Journey for the Mobile but Not Agile" by Warren Rovetch provides unique perspectives for "agility challenged" travelers to Southwestern Ireland. "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" provides so much more than just another guide to the local sights to see and the Bed and Breakfast places to stay in while traveling through The Irish counties of Clare, Kerry and West Cork. Warren has an exciting eclectic personal background that he draws upon as a rather gifted writer. For example, he has been an economist, a textbook publisher, a creator of an environmental education and conference center on the Columbia River, and a Fullbright Scholar. He has created many projects focused on new approaches to learning and education. He was widely traveled even in his pre-creaky days, so his recent series is an expanding of his experience that is especially appealing to mature adult travelers. You might say he has "been there and done it and got the T-shirt" at least twice. So it is no surprise that "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" includes wonderful quotations from appropriate Irish literature (translated to English), intimate epiphanies, anecdotes, and other accounts of travel experiences, and humourous musings on the plight of the modern adult traveler and the world traveled, in addition to valuable tips and suggestions about sights to see, walks to take, and places to seek out. "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" is a treasure trove of information that can be of great worth to both the novice traveler and the Irish locals themselves. The text is further enhanced by a series of handy descriptive maps and a center selection of beautiful color photographs of sites and sights of interest. "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" is sure to be another success in this on-going series from Sentient Publications, piquing the reader's curiosity, tantalizing same to wonder where the "Creaky Traveler" will voyage to next. Also very highly recommended reading is the first book in this outstanding series by Warren Rovetch: "The Creaky Traveler In The North West Highlands Of Scotland".
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for planning
While we're not planning on a trip to Ireland in the near future, I enjoyed the Creaky Traveler in Scotland so was pleased to see the author has done a second book, this one on Ireland. The portion covering their trip to Ireland is very good armchair travel reading. My favorite portion of both books, though, is the author's explanation of his and his wife's, G, travel philosophies and travel tips.Even though we are a bit creaky, you certainly don't need to be to make excellent use of these chapters at the beginning and end of the book. Recommended for both enjoyable reading and planning.

I am reading books to my 89-year-old mother. We enjoyed "The Unsavvy Traveler," subtitled women's COMIC tales of adventure. But despite the promising title, the "Hot Flashes" stories generally aren't funny. 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let the Title Turn You Off
This book is not about "old people" - it is instead an extremely well written and informative book for people who just happen to be over 50, who want to go on a cruise, and have a LOT of fun. To quote the author ... "For this book, mature travelers refers to adults who know what they want, both from a vacation and from life. Some overworked forty-year-olds want to prop up their feet and unwind for seven full days while the active retirees water-ski." You want to dance up a storm all night? He'll tell you the ships that offer that kind of nightlife. You don't want to be around children? He'll tell you that, too. The author walks you through the entire process of identifying the right type of cruise for your personality, which ships give special attention to the older person who is traveling with a spouse or alone; how to book one, how to prepare for one, what to do once on board, and finally an overview of the various cruise lines and ship profiles. I have purchased 5 books about cruising this past month from Amazon. Some I found a little bland; some were too hysterical and overwhelming in their detail. This one and the Berlitz book by Douglas Ward were the best for me. I felt Mr. Smith gave me all of the necessary details but in a writing style that was far more personal and interesting. Please don't let the title turn you off - I was worried about it too - this book is terrific! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Way to Save Money while Traveling the World
"According to a recent New York Times article, a quarter of a million home exchanges take place annually."
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Concept To Save Travel Money
HOME EXCHANGE GUIDE: HOW TO FIND YOUR FREE HOME AWAY FROM HOME!by M.T. Simon and T.T. Baker. The authors have compiled an extensive guidebook, the first of its kind, telling readers all they need to know about how to find a wonderful, free place to stay almost anywhere in the world, by offering their own home in a holiday exchange. The book details how to go about finding the homes in the place you desire to go, what questions to ask, how to make all the arrangements and set up your own home for the safe exchange. You'll learn about perks you can offer or expect, such as car exchange, etc.Authors also cover how to handle disappointments, what to do in emergencies, and how to leave the home as you hope they will leave yours.Such a home exchange frees up your money to be spent on nice extras instead of lodging, for a super vacation almost anywhere you dream of.Although the book does not list the homes for exchange, you will find a great listing of websites and places to find the homes listed and to list your own.For travelers who find the idea of a home exchange appealing, this book is an indispensable guide which covers almost any aspect you could think of

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mediocre Book on Home Exchange
This is a mediocre book on Home Exchange. The authors are well informed and experienced on most aspects of the subject but not on all.For example, they have little to say about the distinctive aspects of home exchanges with children. They often express wishy-washy opinions when a strong suggestion is required. They over emphasize the economic benefits of home exchange while not saying enough about its other advantages. They make a few suggestions that are generally wrong.Examples are their recommendation to subscribe to more than one home exchange service and write scores of potential exchange partners at one time. They also suggest you can have a home exchange anywhere you want which is untrue. One's ability to find a home exchange in a particular place is dependent upon supply and demand and the quality of your offer. They have useful ideas on computer security but little to say on using the Internet for detailed research. The book is boring with only one or two amusing comments. Our family has exchanged six times in five different countries and has had many interesting and wonderful adventures. This book fails to illustrate and discuss the adventurous, exciting, and humorous aspects of home exchange. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent stories about a world
I would recommend this book to anyone who wonders if there is "life" after 60 (or even 40). The authors' passion for life and adventure is heard in the book's stories. There is a clear and united voice even though the book's chapters are alternately written by differing points-of-views, one from the artist (Catharine) and the other from the scientist (Patrick). Gives young people a perspective on life beyond a career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments on "At Sea At Sixty: Reflections ...
This is a thought provoking and insightful book by a well educated professional couple. Yet one feels to be traveling with them. Gracefully blending vivid descriptions of their daily experiences on an educational cruise around the world with comments relating to human nature, culture and religion, this is a most delightful book to read and think about. With intolerance (or worse) so much in the news, reading this book is a refreshing reminder that "we are all one" to The Other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Around the World with Ying and Yang
This is a highly readable book which will make you laugh, make youthink, challenge your assumptions about the world, and reflect about thevalue of travelling to other cultures. Pat and Catharine, the engineer andthe artist, have done something most unusual. They wisely have writtenchapters alternately using their own voices...describing then reflectingupon the meaning of the people ,places and cultures they encounter on their"Semester at Sea" journey with hundreds of undergraduates. Theyand about 50 other "older" students join the journey and provideseasoning for the whole trip.P and C complement each other superbly, a yingand a yang completing the circle. This is one of the most interesting, thoughtful, provocative, insightful and fun books I have read in decades.Ifyou are worried about aging, this book is the perfect antidote.
