5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!I am not alone!!
I am the quintessential third-culture kid.I was on a plane taking me to Singapore before I could walk. This began my life traveling from country to country following my father's career in an oil service company.Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Netherlands, and all points in between. This was my life until in was time for university, and I moved back to the States. When I read this book, I feel like I am reading the diary of my life. For the longest time I often wondered what was "wrong" with me.Why could I not fit in, why did I not feel at home?
5-0 out of 5 stars An explanation of why we are the way we are
To me personally it was like reading my own psychological profile, complete with explanations of every weird quirk and odd personality trait, good or bad, that I've ever displayed.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read
This book is a well-written, clear and systematic treatment of what is surely a difficult theme, because everything pertaining to TCKs is so personal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely out of date
Time Out does a good job of detailing many options for what to do with yourself during your time off, but it is so woefully out of date that it mentions a few countries that are no longer in existence. It has very detailed information that must have been useful at the time it was written, but it can serve only as a stepping off point now. One would be better off going with something newer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
"The Global Citizen" is a MUST READ for anyone seeking to establish an international lifestyle. I especially liked the sections that allowed real people who've moved abroad the opportunity to write about their experiences. These "journal entries" gave me a lot of inspiration. The book is loaded with program information for study, voluteering and work abroad. There is a chapter on financing your journeys which offers information about scholarships and grants that I didn't even know existed! I highly recommend "The Global Citizen" for anyone serious about going abroad short-term or long-term.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory value, poor on details
If you are under 20, not sure what to do with your life and contemplating about how cool it is to travel to Europe and save the rain forests - this book is perfect for you (even better if you want to save rain forests in Europe). Then, if you are not from US, don't have kickass amount of money to spend or know exactly what you want - bypass this title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Book!
This book is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone! The author writes on a personal level like she is talking to you and it is also written from a emotional level so it is easy to understand. This book gets you excited about all the possibilities and the author explains any fears you may have and how you can get over them and overall she gets the word across to never give up!She also gives e-mail adresses from other people who have experience travel. This is a great book, everyone can benefit from this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Recommendation for the Bowers Book on Guanajuato
As someone who has visited Mexico several times as I struggle with my study of Spanish, and who is thinking of moving there, I found this book to be far superior to the general run of guides on the expatriate life or retiring in Mexico. Some of the others of this genre just lack the ring of authenticity, or seemed to be aimed at people with a lot of bucks who are headed for a gated community or an expensive house in Cabo San Lucas. But the Bowers' book has that ring of authenticity and is squarely aimed at the (for lack of a better cliche) "average Joe" who is looking for a life that is different and/or better and needs down-to-earth practical advice on how an American can make this transition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Considering a move to Mexico? Here's a must-read.
If you're seriously considering a move to Mexico, the author offers the most realistic look at the real Mexico that I've ever found. Having traveled to Guanajuato many times as my family and I prepare for a move there, this book paints a vivid picture of the city's many charms, and also at its few "warts."

5-0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING & INFORMATIVE
I came to this book hoping to receive insight into the mindset of those responsible for 9/11.In a way, it was billed that way to me.But the closest UNDERSTANDING ARABS comes to answering the question Why? is that many Arabs feel the US backing of Israeli boarders is in direct conflict with US reasoning behind going into Iraq in 1991 to enforce the boarders of Kuwait.According to UA, a 2001 poll of various Middle Eastern countries indicate 90% of residents feel the Palestinian issue is among their top three concerns.Unfortunately, this issue is not looked at in depth, no doubt because the author is not qualified to comment.2-0 out of 5 stars Good on Arabic customs, poor on geopolitics
This book is two books into one.The first book is essentially how to get along in Arabic countries. The second book is on geopolitics.5-0 out of 5 stars It Changed My Life.
I first learned to fall in love with the Arab people through this book. As I delved into Islamic and Arabic culture studies, I came across Understanding Arabs, and was fascinated by what I found. A culture that put the group over the individual, that valued honor so highly, that had no word or concept for privacy (not as it is defined in American culture) . . . The more I read, the more God put them on my heart, and the more my heart became one with the Arab people, for here I found a culture so like my own. Over the years, in further reading and further experience, I've learned a lot more beyond Nydell's terse etic generalization of Arabic culture, but most of what she shares is accurate, and limited enough to be a very easy read, while making you pant for more. She writes with a Semitic style, sharing stories which illuminates the people far more than dry text. Come and read this book, and see for yourself the beginnings of a love affair with the Arab people. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything A Women Needs in Japan
For western women resident in Japan, this is the bible, the encyclopedia, and the Hold Grail all rolled in one. In spite of a somewhat flippant-but nevertheless clever-title, Being A Broad in Japan covers all the details women will have when living in Japan. It is comprehensive on, among other topics, survival (emergencies, finance, hair, etc.), home, health, relationships, becoming a mother, jobs and the workplace, Japanese language, and leaving Japan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't move to Japan without it!
This is the only book I have seen addressing women's issues in Japan. It specifically deals with the challenges Western women face when they live in Japan. It is quite thorough and well-written.The author and her work are very accessible and I would highly recommend this reference to any female planning a relocation. The book is not written for casual vacationers, but can provide useful insights into daily living, if you are curious. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging, practical, invaluable planning resource for studying abroad
Study Abroad: Travel Vacation In College by Stephanie M. Oxford suggests an innovative approach to an active and fun pursuit of foreign study for college students. Introducing reader to a quite comprehensive but thoroughly "user friendly" guide for overseas studies preparation, determining study objectives while traveling, learning how to vacation overseas while earning a college degree, the diverse research opportunities of the varying programs for studying abroad, establishment of a budget and expenses, as well as "knowhow" for the needed money, detailed preparation of checklist for packing needs, insight from the personal experiences of former travel students, and an exclusive companion for aide in achieving set goals, Study Abroad is an engaging, practical, invaluable planning resource for studying abroad.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ever wonder what it would be like to learn a second language while sunbathing on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea?
"Study Abroad, Travel & Vacation in College" gave me the information that I needed to travel overseas and get credit for the adventure. There are thousands of study abroad opportunities in countries all over the world that the author shows you how to research and access. This book features many different tools for guiding students through an overseas educational experience. The first chapter discusses how to define objectives and establish goals for studying outside the country. The seven other chapters involve resources from researching international programs, facts on program costs, trip preparation tools, tips on how to spend time in a foreign country and a discussion on how to adjust to the return home. The book was simple and showed me what to do every step of the way, so I didn't feel overwhelmed at the prospect of participating in an overseas learning adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars International Student Volunteer Participant
The information in this book has definitely made me reconsider my once-forgotten dream of studying abroad. I have always been an enthusiastic traveler, and the examples of the great variety of study abroad options excited me even further. On top of that, I really had no idea that my financial aid could help cover tuition and expenses. Now the question is...where do I want to go? ... Read more

Editorial Review

This may be one of those books that came into being because its title sprang to the editor's mind one day. In any case, it is a minor gem, a collection of new and reprinted writings by women over 50 on the themes of travel, athleticism, and adventure. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK but excessively earnest
I am reading books to my 89-year-old mother. We enjoyed "The Unsavvy Traveler," subtitled women's COMIC tales of adventure. But despite the promising title, the "Hot Flashes" stories generally aren't funny. Many authors seems to be struggling to find something profound to say.All in all, a disappointing read. ... Read more
