1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Looking At
Poor reproduction quality.Actually no quality. Not approved by the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust.

1-0 out of 5 stars Adams wouldn't have approved
While some photos are reasonable, most are seriously flawed. Some are flat, some are excessively contrasty, others seem murky and indistinct. Some of the photos need cleaning to remove dust spots, etc. Even the title is wrong , as the book includes photos of dams and sheep. There are many other excellent books, which have been prepared from Adams prints and produced with much more care. Buy one of those.

2-0 out of 5 stars Are we looking at the same book?
Many of Ansel Adams' exquisite photographs call out for large reproductions, and this book displays them in a decent size format. But what a waste. The reproductions are nearly all flat and murky, with little detail in the shadow. If I had read far enough down into the customer reviews, I would have been warned; but the reviews at the top of the stack were quite favorable. Which leads me to wonder: Are we looking at the same book? I advise readers to purchase Adams books published by Little, Brown, and Company (aka "Bulfinch"). Even at smaller sizes their books display much more detail and clarity than does this disappointing edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Arctic Study
This is a really good book.I think the author's ability to describe the Arctic environment and its inhabitants in glorious detail. Each chapter is devoted entirely to an Arctic creature or an environmental characteristic or to some historical context. My favorite chapter by far is "Ice and Light".In this chapter we get, I think, the most detailed description to be found on the colors of icebergs, flora, fauna, sea, and general landscape of the Arctic. In addition to that, we get an added bonus (especially for you astro-geeks out there).Lopez delves into the atmospheric phenomena that occur in and around the Arctic.I found this section to be truly amazing. The occurrence of these atmospheric effects resulted in some unique sightings by early explorers only to be later attributed to these phenomena. All in all, this is a really good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites...
My favorite book, since I was in high school, has been Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire. I never thought any book I ever read could trump the drama and emotion of that book, but Arctic Dreams is its equal, if not its superior. I do admit I am biased. This book is like a life story of a person I have been in love with for my entire life.I've read a ton of books on the Arctic, and this is one of the best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive account on wildlife too....
I especially liked his account of polar bears, harp seals and whales and their intermingling relationships. His description of how he perceived his surroundings made me feel as if I was there! In fact, it made me book a 10-day trip to Alaska in order to escape the stresses of city-living for a while! I was somewhat surprised by the chapter on Eskimos and a thorough discussion of their origin since I had expected this book to be a travelogue at best. Of course, it is much more. The chapter on Ice and Light, for instance, is outstanding and has probably the best description I have read on the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis)!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Origin of The Origin of Species
Voyage of the Beagle: A Naturalist's Journey Around the World
5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT AND NOBLE WORK
An unexpected pleasure awaits the reader who comes to this book after reading THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES (1859), for it exhibits not only the same seriousness of purpose, the same comprehensive view of nature and the same precision in describing the natural world as the later, revolutionary work, but it also unfolds a captivating narrative of scientific exploration. Whether begun as a study, a cultural duty or an escape from everyday blather, THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE, first published with a rambling Victorian title in 1839, is certain to uplift your mind and your spirit.

I really enjoyed this book, an amazing 5 years adventure of Charles Darwin and Captain FitzRoy. Specially, when they travelled through Chile, and Valparaiso my home city.

This book is amazing!!! The photos are spectacular, and the author is very descriptive -- he makes you feel like you are actually there. Recommend highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars what it is like to work and wonder way way down under
This is a clearly written, funny, moving and fascinating account of what it was like for the author to work in Antarctica over a number of years. While he has told it like a one-year trip, in fact it is a distillation of 14 years experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars First Person Text And Beautiful Photographs

Editorial Review

Most Westerners, thanks to television documentaries and numerous books, have some inkling of the appalling destruction of Africa's many ecosystems and the animal species that live in them. Fewer are aware of the work being done in several African nations to preserve these ecosystems. The noted travel photographer Frans Lanting takes us into one protected area, the Okavango River, which begins in the mountains of Angola and ends a thousand miles later in the very heart of Botswana's Kalahari Desert, "the great thirstland." Lanting's photographs are stunning, capturing lionesses in mid hunt, ibises on the wing, and elephants preparing to charge. A trained ecologist, he also takes care to describe how the river interacts with the dry lands that surround it. Lanting's book belongs in the libraries of both Africa buffs and river aficionados. 5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest pictorial work on Okavango!
Frans Lanting had created marvelous book. His pictures portray the unique beauty of the region, convey the wildness of a place, and force a viewer to visit the place immediately. The photographs and text also urge the people to save this unique ecosystem. We realize the impact of water on the unique environment of the delta that supports the greatest variety of the flora and fauna in the world. At the same time these photographs make us realize what will be lost if the water will be gone. This book has inspired me even more after I visited the Okavango delta. It made me to relive my own experiences once again. After more than 5 years of its publication, this book is still the best pictorial work on Okavango delta. Simply, the greatest!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning photography and wonderful narrative
This is a terrific book to learn more about this region.I can't recommend the book enough. The photography is stunning and the narrative is just right.I only wish it didn't end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frans Lanting sees Botswana with a keen eye.
Mr. Lanting is a unique and wonderful photographer who is a great help to all of us.His photos capture the wildlife of the Okavango as they are -- not postcard photos. He has a respect and reverence of this fragileecosystem (unlike none other in the world) and all that lives and diesthere that is captured in this book.Botswana is a special country with aunique ecosystem in the Delta that you should travel to.I've had the goodfortune to experience Africa eight times, Botswana twice.I will returnmany times to the Delta as there is so much there to experience and eachtime its fresh.Let Mr. Lantings photos pursuade you to go. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Reliable guide for pet-friendly lodging
Just put this newly purchased guide to the test during a trip through parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas with our 60-pound dog.The hotel and motel listings are very accurate and up-to-date, so we had few surprises when calling to book rooms or arriving at properties. The only improvements I would suggest are more recommendations for outdoor dog play places (especially those that are leash-free) and for restaurants with outdoor dining areas that permit dogs.We had fairly good success improvising leash-free play zones in national forest areas off the highways and were able to find some eating places with patios or decks that permitted dogs...

5-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage for pet friendly places
We are on our 3rd annual Traveling With Your Pet (8th ED.). We do quite a bit of traveling with our Miniature Austrailian Shepherd. This book is the best resource we have found for traveling with pets. The book has the usual AAA ratings for places, along with details of pet policies for each place. We have tested our book against several online sites, and although you may occasionally find a different place online which is not in this book, overall the book is the most thorough of all resources we have seen.
2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but limited selection
Over the past several years, I've use the AAA guide, but found that since it only lists AAA motels, I miss a lot of good places to stay.I now prefer The Pet Travel and Fun Authority, since it has twice as many listings and also entire chapters on things to do with your pet when traveling. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars gorgeous illustrations, info. you won't find anywhere else
This has got to be the single best guide to Antarctica's unusual wildlife. Everything is covered here, from Gentoo Penguins to Crab-Eater Seals (which don't actually eat crabs). Beautiful illustrations make it easy to identify birds & other animals while your out on the ice. If you're going to the White Continent, you'll want to stash this little book in your daypack. This book was useful when my husband & I visited the Antarctic peninsula, which we chronicle in our DVD "T&T's Real Travels in Antarctica" (also available on amazon.com).

5-0 out of 5 stars A handbook essential for any Antarctica-bound traveler
The price tag may seem steep for the fourth edition of this 144-page paperback - but where else are you going to find details on the wildlife of Antarctica, tailored as a take-along tote for the Antarctica-bound traveler? Color drawings by Dafila Scott accompany nature history descriptions of each creature and discussions of identification specific to Antarctica, from contending with visibility factors to seasonal identification features. Antarctica: A Guide To The Wildlife is a unique and strongly recommended "take-along" handbook essential for any Antarctica-bound traveler.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, portable guide
I bought this book in preparation for a trip 'South' in December 1999/January 2000 and it was an extremely useful guide to wildlife in general but especially good for penguin information. The drawings by an ancestor of Robert F. Scott's are lifelike, and engaging art as well. The brief summaries of natural and exploration history are accessible and informative. If you are looking for a portable guide to peninsular wildlife get the book--you won't regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Only Travel Book!
My dog comes with me everywhere--all vacations, road trips etc...This book has been a life-saver, I can't imagine traveling without it! It not only gives a very thorough list of dog friendly accomodations, but it also lists dog friendly activities--though honestly, it's mostly about accomodations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not such a headache any more!
This book has been very helpful with our cross country jounts.I would make a suggestion though. Not all businesses stay openor carry the same inventory. Before I drive to a place out of the way or a special trip, I call in advance to see if they are open. For the hotels/motels I make sure the rules have not changed and the prices are reasonable. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for those of us with dogs who love to travel.
This is a great book, we have dogs and love to travel. This book gives us a wonderful list of places to stay and other information.
3-0 out of 5 stars I expected more
I expected more places that you can let dogs off-leash.There are many "dog parks" in CT that were not even mentioned in this book. All in all it, it gave me a couple of places to go.I am more interested in places that dogs can socialized and run.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Must-Have!
I've purchased a few pet travel books, but this one is by far the best one I've seen. My husband, dog and I just came back from a vacation in Portland, ME and this book was indispensable. Not only did it list some great pet shops to visit, but also provided us with a wonderful place to leave the puppy at Doggie Day Camp while we went shopping for the day. The other pet travel guides I have usually just list lodging accomodations, but this book lists not only canine-friendly places to stay, but also recreational areas, restaurants, boarding and grooming services and even vets in the area in case of a puppy emergency! All entries have addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and websites if available. In addition, the front section of the book has some great travel tips. Each region of each state is given a "biscuit rating" as to its level of canine-friendliness and each has a handy map. If you love to travel in New England and don't want to leave Fido at home, then you need this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good to superficial guide, depending on your interests
Having visited the Galpagos and planning my return, I can say this introductory booklet (140 pages) is a reliable for people who want an overall idea of the ecology and want to identify some of the most prominent wildlife they are likely to encounter - it is easy to understand, has good information, decent photos of the main players and illustations of the commonest landing sites. For you, this booklet rates three stars for clarity, comprehension level and lightness in your backpack, but it fails next to Andy Swash and Rob Still's more comprehensive and better illustrated "Birds, Mammals and Reptiles of the Galpagos Island". 5-0 out of 5 stars Galapagos Wildlife
I just came back from the Galapagos and found David Horwell's book indispensable. It is a very readable and concise introduction to the flora and fauna of the Galapagos islands. Beautiful photographs. Very informative. Easy to carry around and refer to. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the Galapagos islands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Travel size Galapagos
This relatively small book on the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands is packed with information and pictures. The author has gone to a great deal of trouble to condense a vast amount of data into a handbook for thetraveller, without sacrificing essential information, clarity or accuracy. Not only does it cover the wildlife that the visitor is most likely toencounter, it also gives a succinct history of the islands. Working in theGalapagos Travel Industry, and having considered many similar books forpre-trip briefing and ready reference while in the islands, this is thebook I would recommend. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Conceit
It's a nice conceit.A great outdoor photographer sets for himself the task to taking one, but only one, photograph each and every day for an entire season.
5-0 out of 5 stars Challenge Achieved with Grace
I gave this book to my parents several years ago and still leaf slowly through its pages whenever visiting their home in northern Minnesota. For amateurs and professionals alike, his is a fascinating photographic concept: your own property? a favorite park? your family?or pet? a holiday?

5-0 out of 5 stars I normally hesitate to use this word, but...profound.
I'm a verbal type; I'd rather read a beautifully written description of a frozen lake than stare at a picture of it anytime.Even knowing that, my mother gave me this book several years ago, and I fell in love.I sat with it for hours, seeing, dreaming, and I still take it down often to do the same again. The photographer, Jim Brandenburg, set himself the challenge of taking only one photograph each day for three months, in the boreal forest where he makes his home. The result is a portrait of life as many of us can never experience it: not just "calendar shots," but pictures that show the cruelty of man, the certainty of death, the very simple beauty of a single bright leaf burning on the dark, still waters of an evening pond. Some photos are amazing in themselves and some seem ordinary in the extreme, but it is important to take them as a whole, and see what you learn from the journey. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not enough photos of Gary Ladd...but the photosof Lake Powell are GREAT.
For many people, the name Lake Powell conjures up images of a blue lake among red rock--of boating over a sprawling, azure sheen of unbroken water, beneath high, vermilion sandstone walls. It calls to mind shorelines lined with tamarisks and cottonwoods, bays mottled with preening mergansers and watchful egrets, water caves full of reflected light, and sunsets mirrored by a shining, landlocked ocean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dog-Friendly Hiking
I had been looking forward to this book's publication since a New Hampshire bookseller told me this summer it was coming soon.I live in Vermont 7 months of the year, and New Hampshire the remaining 5. I own a 4-year-old shepherd/black lab mix, Diamond, who loves to go hiking with me. So this book is perfect for us to plan new adventures.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm sure it used to be great.
Swell book but WAY out of date. This is the 5th printing but I've been unable to verify that there is any new information since 1993. We used it on a trip last week and most of the places we checked out had changed their policy or had gone out of business.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dog Lover's Companion To California
The book is wonderful.I really like how the author speaks about the best of the best places to take your dog.She did a wonderful job letting the readers know in advance the prices to bring the dog, as well as, discounts the vendor may offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars she really loves and respects dogs
Who else would write such a dog-centered travel guide! And on far flung counties too.Guide is good for residents and travelers alike. My only gripe is the indexing and the titles and subtitles: I find the book hard to navigate because of the minimal graphic design.Once you put post it notes on the sections that are important to you, then it's fine. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars my review
The book Last Wild Places is an inspiration to the mind. When my grandma sent me the book I started to look through it. The wonderful pictures are even more wonderful the caption of animals in their habitat made me want to read on. The untouched and undisturbed wildlife tell about the wild that the way it's supposed to be. The moving through the different wild places like the frozen polar region to the hot savanna of Africa to Australia and to the tropical forest of Africa takes you all most everywhere, where nature still rules. This book made me think about how wonderful nature can be and can be for you.I thought this book was marvelous and creative. I recommend it to everyone who likes nature and animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars An emotional experience...
It began by my casually flipping through the book at a friend's party, but soon I was hooked.I spent over an hour reading the fascinating articles and admiring the incredible National Geographic photos. If you doubted theexistence of pure, untouched and untainted nature, then this book willrenew your faith in the beauty of the natural world. For me, reading thisbook not only made my day, it also renewed my desire to travel and to seeall of the stunningly beautiful parts of the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars True story and entertaining
I liked this book so much and it stuck with me so when I first read it - the many comments of his "wee bitch" and naming her Gael that my Gael was named from this book. Border collie enthusiasts who see just names on the papers of their dogs may well see some of those names in here. Wonderful people and dogs in real life and an enjoyable read of working dogs, both trials and every day dogs, in Scotland. Loved the book...as someone else mentioned if you're not a fan of border collies you might not find it quite as engaging. Recommended reading for border collie owners!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully enjoyable and marvelously insightful!
A Border Collie owner, I could hardly wait to read this book, and the author's other books, Nop's Trials and Nop's Hope.A one-time visitor to Scotland who can't wait to go back, I eagerly looked forward to this book. And, I was not in the least bit disappointed on either count! The author's style is easy-going and readable, with a subtle humor throughout. His images are brilliant and I just felt like I was present for each scene that he wrote and a part of the action.Someone who has no interest in the working Border Collie might find the book dull.So also might someone who is not particularly interested in the very different lifestyle of the shepherd of Scotland. But for us who love the working Border Collie and find the life of the Scottish shepherd and his/her dog intriguing, this is an absolutely must-read book, over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
