4-0 out of 5 stars Camping with the Army Corps of Engineers
A unique feature of this small book is its tight list of Army Corps of Engineer Campsites that are not found in many other directories or guidebooks. This guide will tell you if the campsite is located near a big city like Atlanta or in a rural area. Organized by state, maps of your destination area are a helpful adjunct. As the name implies, most facilities are located near a body of water. Some tend to be more family oriented, others are described as hideaways--peaceful locations where you can commune with nature. The book provides good directions from major highways and clear information about the campsites. (Most list amenities, such as electric, water and dump stations.) This is a useful tool to have with you on any trip. Coming upon one of these sites can be a wonderful diversion. D. Brandley

3-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and mostly fair, but far from insightful
I really enjoy reading studies of America by foreigners, spending so much time abroad has really reinforced my ideas about what it means to be an American.I picked up "American Vertigo" because I was genuinely interested in what this man had to say about America, its people, its culture and its role in the world.
4-0 out of 5 stars Who Are We?
A French philosopher with liberal leanings tours America to parallel Tocqueville's journey.Basically there are two sections: the tour and his philosophical conclusions. The tour is interesting.Yes, he discloses his political leanings and mentions Clinton and our obsession with a puritanical sexual view (in a European opinion). There is much discussion of Kerry as the tour starts a week after his loss. But the journey touches many varied subjects with excellent thought and particular emphasis on subjects Tocqueville covered in his early 1800's tour, none bigger that our barbaric prison system including Gitmo.Opinions are varied as he moves through the country and varied subjects with in my opinion, no particular leanings but just observations.
2-0 out of 5 stars The oddest characterization Mr. Levy makes in this book: Senator "Norm Coleman, Jewish," has "the smile of a wolf."
"Travelling America in the footsteps of Tocqueville" is the subtitle of this book by fellow Frenchman Bernard-Henry Levy. But Mr. Levy had nothing to do with proposing this trip and little to do with the itnerary of it.Rather, The Atlantic Monthy magazine proposed and set it up for Mr. Levy; although the author does say of the stops proposed that "it was glanced at before leaving."So where did the Atlantic send him to look for America?Mr. Levy's first destination is New York's Rikers Island jail (just the first of 5 prisons he ultimately visits).Next he goes to Cooperstown.Cooperstown is the home of the baseball hall of fame of course, but also the "town of James Fenimore Cooper, and thus of the symbolic responsibility for the slaughter of the Indians," says Mr. Levy.Mr. Levy finds it hard to believe why "every year millions of men and women come, like me, to visit a town devoted entirely to the celebration of a myth."The myth he is referring to is the fact that baseball (as we have since learned) has origins older than Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown. So, presumably it's ridiculous to travel there anymore.Obviously, however, folks go there for the Baseball Hall of Fame, not to pay homage to Mr. Doubleday.Apparently Mr. Levy believes that a celebratory museum of America's pasttime has to be located in the actual place baseball was invented, otherwiseAmericans are saps for visiting it.(The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is a myth too then and, presumably, not at all worth visiting either, in Mr. Levy's view, presumably.)Likewise, he attacks Gutzon Borglum for proposing to carve Mount Rushmore in Indian territory.Borglum, however, had nothing to do with choosing the sight. And even less justfiable is his criticism that Mount Rushmore is far more grand than the monument for Wounded Knee (also in SW South Dakota), as if everything in America is proposed and commissioned out of Washington D.C.Mount Rushmore was NOT a federal government project. Its size (and the lack of size for the Wounded Knee marker) has nothing to do with decisions made in America's capital. It was a South Dakotan project pure and simple. Conclusion: Mount Rushmore is another huge American myth not worth visiting either.I suppose if Mount Rushmore was carved at Mt Vernon then it be be worthwhile.Such is the reasoning of this Frenchman; who, incidentailly, could have phoned in this book from his homeland as it is full of cliches: Americans "are armed like Nazis" (yes, Mr. Levy uses the term "like Nazis." He also calls America's "obsession with the flag" to be "strange," because, apparenty, it only flies at government buildings in France.Care to know where else Mr. Levy was sent to by the Atlantic Monthy?Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, San Francisico, et al.But it is not just places he visits. He also meets with a number of representitives of America culture along the way.Any guesses who the Atlantic Monthy set up for him to meet to take the cultural pulse of America?Answer: Norman Mailer, Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, and Warren Beatty. This book's jacket describes Mr. Levy as a "brilliant and sympathetic foreign observer" who "has arrived to help us begin a new conversation about the meaning of America."That's the biggest myth, actually, of this book.(06Aug) Cheers! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for the casual off-roader
I've been using this book for close to a couple years now. While I don't consider myself a novice to off-roading, I definitely don't fall into the rock-crawling group, preferring to use my 4x4 to simply get me to new and out-of-the-way places when time permits. Thus far it has proven to be an excellent resource for quick weekend off-roading getaways and for reading up on new trails to explore. In fact, I've enjoyed this book so much I wound up buying two others as gifts for family and friends. The photos and overviews of each trail definitely help give a good feel for what to expect. If you're a techno-geek like me, being able to plot a computer-generated map using the detailed GPS coordinates will prove highly invaluable (though I have discovered a few critical--though easily identifiable and correctable--errors in the coordinates), and with a handheld GPS I don't need to worry about the often-unusual orientation of the printed maps. For those of us who love exploring, this book will make a fantastic resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The best book for beginners.Gives ratings and some pictures for all the trails, so you know what to expect.Probably not a whole lot for more advanced off-roaders, but then they probably won't be reading this book anyway.I recommend this book for anybody with an SUV who wants to use it off-highway.The only downside of this book is the detail maps of the trails. For some reason, they couldn't agree on which way to point North(usually north is up in all other maps) so sometimes you have to turn the book sideways to the right or left to get your bearings. Also, not much detail on the maps themselves, so sometimes you really dont' know where you are in relation to the surrounding area. But they give plenty of detail in the driving directions, so you almost don't need the map.Best book I've ever bought, anyone who likes to adventure outdoors should buy this. You don't even need an SUV on the easier trails.

5-0 out of 5 stars The quintessential So Cal book for dirt road exploring.
First thing that hits you is the heft of this book.It is large and heavy, but that just tantalizes you of what lies beyond the cover. It is full of so much information about southern California's backcountry you could spend hours and hours reading. But this book is to be used as a guide for exploring. And guide you it does. The maps, descriptions and details are excellent for each trail. The history section is great and my family and I even used this book to identify plants from its full color photos on our last outing. For anyone wanting to explore dirt trails in So Cal, from mild ones not really needing 4 wheel drive to more difficult ones, this book is for you. Rock crawlers need not apply, but for the other 99% of us with 4x SUV's this book is perfect! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I actually give this book 10 stars...**********
This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone planning a trip to Walt Disney World. It is jam-packed full of all the important information you need to plan your trip. The book has an extensive list of all the WDW resorts including maps of the resort, ratings, cost, a blueprint of the room layout, and a million other little details. The book also has a wonderful list of all the WDW restaurants; including those in the parks and at each resort. The restaurant guide is extremely comprehenisve and helpful when making any advanced dinner reservations.Of course there is also a TON of information on each of the four parks; including comprehensive, easy to read and helpful maps, touring guides, time tables, etc.You name it - this book has it.
5-0 out of 5 stars WDW Novices Rejoice!
As a novice in the realm of WDW visitors, I have been planning a trip to visit WDW for Halloween.I found this book to be a terrific guide. This edition of the book is spiral bound and has fold-out maps of each of the 4 parks and a review of each ride. Also invaluable are the guides to the restaurants (sit-down as well as counter service) as well as tips to help you get through the trip without killing your traveling companion out of frustration. The book is well written and lovingly researched by Disney vacationers. The spiral binding makes it easier to open and the packing list is invaluable.Anyone who wants to visit the Kingdom of the Mouse, this book will be quite helpful in getting the most enjoyment out of your travel budget.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide book

4-0 out of 5 stars History is fun!
A look at the history of U.S. presidential assassinations.Part history, part comic commentary, Ms. Vowell extensively documents her visits to sites (official or not) associated with these events. The history of the assassinations alone is interesting and details are often overlooked (or not looked at at all - e.g., Garfield, McKinley) when these events are presented / captured in popular forums. It is a quick read that will shed light on and insight into these assassinations that you never considered before.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will buy this book from you if you don't like it
I read this book aloud to 5 pre- and teenagers on a grueling road trip down south over Easter. Not only did it hold their attention the entire time it was an incredible coincidence to pass an important site in the book at the EXACT time we were reading about the capture of John Wilkes Boothe. Because of the author's exacting description we were able to arrive at the exact site she describes in such detail and VOILA, nearly living history. (Of course, being uncouth Northerners we allowed our dog to pee on the shrine in question and one child left eggs from his Easter basket on the marker). This book compelled me to read three or four more books about Lincoln, Booth and assorted others Vowell writes about. She captures history in such a remarkably approachable manner, I've since bought copies for every history teacher in our school district. Every American should read this book and even if you think you know about our first assassinations, you will learn something, and laugh while learning it. Spectacular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move over Bill Bryson, there's stiff competition
Assassination Vacation is one of the best books I've read this Summer. Ms Vowell should take up teaching American history. Her brilliant and expert knowledge of her subjects (normally written about in stententious and serious tones given the subject matter) is quite impressive. But, it is the wit and humor and unusual angle of expression and personal observations that is the most captivating. I was amazed to learn so much more about the Lincoln assassination and conspirators (despite more than 35 years of reading and research on the subject) and view it from a different and less reverent angle. But even more, I was entranced by the Garfield and McKinley coverage - which added huge amounts of information to my very limited knowledge of either of these presidents or their assassins and the events surrounding them. Garfield came off so much better than I ever knew - which was very little. And his hilarious "disappointed office seeker" far more ambitious (Ambassador to France?) and political (Stalwart for Grant) than I ever knew. Don't know how one can make an account of assassinations hilariously funny? Read this book - and don't assume that it isn't historically accurate, because it is. This one is a real keeper and I am thinking of buying it on tape - just so I can listen to it while stuck in traffic, so that fellow travellers can see someone who is having fun while in the midst of DC rush hours.Have fun with this book and share it with everyone you know who loves history and has a good sense of humor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As if Straight From Your Dreams!
This book is amazing. It includes the most gorgeous photographs, information on every place, the price, and the length of each activity. The author experienced it all himself. 5-0 out of 5 stars You must experience this book
Fodor's Travel Publications commissioned photojournalist Peter Guttman to document some 28 different escapist experiences in North America, and the result is truly delightful. Guttman's photography is brilliant, his essays crisply capture the essence of each adventure, and the appendix lists the names of specific organizations that one can contact (and contract) to engage in each of the documented experiences.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Never To Be Forgotten
There have been numerous books published which present exhaustive overviews of New York City and environs, but "Forgotten New York" is the first to focus exclusively on the vanishing details which once defined the metropolitan area. So much of the larger urban picture is made up of small but significant specifics -- street furniture, architectural subtleties, physical or geographical characteristics of particular neighborhoods -- that when they begin to disappear, the entire fabric of the neighborhood, and the larger urban area, are affected. Kevin Walsh has spent a lifetime defining, finding, and chronicling these elements, and "Forgotten New York" is devoted to remembering them, in the interest of understanding the continuum of the larger picture via its changing landscape.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Bird's Eye View Of Forgotten Places
I agree with the comment "Whirlwind Tours." The book covers tons of neighborhoods throughout all of NYC but simplistically. It's a wonderful book if viewed merely as a sampling of forgotten places. Perhaps Kevin can follow this book up with more detailed books on each borough: Forgotten Manhattan; Forgotten Queens, etc. After being introduced to in-depth coverage of forgotten places throughout the city on Kevin's website, I was a little disappointed with this cursory exploration.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Guide to New York for the Native New Yorker
Most NYC guidebooks out there are heavy on Manhattan, light on Brooklyn, and ignore the other three boroughs of this city completely.Kevin Walsh has managed to write a guide that includes the entire city, is entertaining, and will appeal to people who were born and raised in New York as well as those who are just visiting. It will open your eyes to the past of the city around you - and things that are often ignored, neglected or taken for granted.A definite must have book for the NYC native! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this guide only as a complement to the "Top 10 New York" guide, or other small guide like that...
I recently visited NYC for the first time. I took only three books about that city with me: this guide, the "Top 10 New York" guide, and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". I must say that the "Lonely planet NYC Guide" was not my favourite, though.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I liked the combination of facts and opinions.Interesting suggestions.Good walking tours.Good color maps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide, BAD index
What makes this a great guide is the fact that the listings for attractions/ shops / etc all have map numbers, which makes them very easy to find on the book's maps. Also, the maps have their own little mini tables of attractions. So, it's easy find where to go (if you are looking for something in particular) or what's around you (if you're already there).Unfortunately, the index is sorely lacking.Suppose you want to go for a horse-drawn carriage ride in Central Park, and you want to know where to find the carriages. You will not find out through the index. There is no mention of them under "Central Park."There is no listing for "carriages" nor "carriage rides" and the listing for "horse-drawn carriages" is about the ones in Philadelphia.Luckily, there actually is an extensive paragraph telling you all you need to know about this, and it is in the book's description of Central Park (which makes sense). But you wouldn't know by looking at the index. So, if you're planning a trip to N.Y., and you don't see a particular attraction in the index, do some research on the web, find out where it's supposed to be, and then turn to the section on that particular neighborhood in the book.Maybe you'll find it there.Use a highlighter to mark the page. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gold mine
This book really is awesome. Sure it doesn't list every campground out there, but the book is already the size of a major city's phone book, so it lists the best ones. I love the rating system because it gives each campground separate 1-5 star ratings whether camping with a tent or in an RV. Extraordinary detail and excellent tips, but so far I haven't seen any altitudes given, which would have been useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kauai on a shoestring
If you're curious about what Kauai is like and what there is to do there, Kauai Trailblazer is your guide. Practical info is as good as you can get and their style is lively and positive. We counted on it day by day to get us to the highs. The locals even gave it the two thumbs up. We stayed in the plantation cottages they recommended and never looked back. Our getaway turned out to be not that expensive. We're going back for more at Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prime guide
HIGHLY recommended. We designed our own itinerary weeks ahead looking at all the photos in the book.A virtual Kauai. Another good feature is their layout. The hikes and snorkeling spots are grouped according to place. As we circled around we knew exactly what there was to do in each town. In the front of the book, before the list of hikes is the authors "Best" list.Start there. If this is your first visit, this is the book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Puuokila Hiking
If you are lucky enough to vacation on Kauai you should take the hike on page 170.It follows the highest rim along the top of the Kalalau Valley. The view down is an everchanging dreamscape. We followed the trail all the way to the Alakai Swamp, an all dayer, and when we returned around five the valley view took on a whole other personality with swirling clouds that were pink and orange. We made a poster of the photo we took at sunset. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide book on Oahu!
We just returned from our first trip to Oahu, and I have to say that because of this book I felt like I'd already been there as soon as our plane touched down. The island seemed so familiar because of the thoroughness and detailed research the authors put into the book.We also loved the candid and humorous writing of the authors. The up-to-date and easily accessible information on the Revealed website scored points with us too.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide book I have ever owned.
As you can see from all of other comments this book is outstanding. This is a true guide book that does not have to be read cover to cover, but if you do you should find something interesting on just about every page. This book talks about many hidden gems on the island that only locals know about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Daily Guide Book
Just returned from a first trip to Oahu and used this book exclusively as a guide. Best parts - Maps, Directions, Advice to rent a car (get the Jeep Wrangler) and explore, hiking trail recommendations (Maunawili Trail was fantastic). Only draw back - encouragement to check out the beaches on the west side. Sorry, I couldn't honestly recommend anyone to go west past KO'Olina. The Windward and North Shore were great as well as Waikiki. Really worth having if you're heading to Oahu. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TOOL FOR HILLERMAN LOVERS
If you enjoy having as many details as possible when you read Tony H's wonderful Leaphorn/Chee sagas, this map will help you have a much better sense of the stories. I now keep it with whichever book I am reading, so I may recall where the various settings are in relation to one another. WORTH THE SMALL EXPENSE!

4-0 out of 5 stars Tony Hillerman's Time Traveler Map
Tony Hillerman's stories take place over a wide-spread area. This map helps the reader locate important points in his various novels and see their visual relationship to each other.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful companion to Hillerman's mystery books
Too bad for me, this came out after I'd read most of Hillerman's mystery books. Lucky you if you haven't read most of the mysteries yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars American Casino Guide -- Yes
It's a win win book.Use just a coupon or two and you've paid for the book. There is much good information in there too. Can't afford not to have one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Las Vegas bound
If you are going to Las Vegas, you get your money back and then some with the coupons in the back of the book.It helps if you are renting a car or driving, as many of the 2 for 1 offers are outside of the strip area. I have used this book for 3 years and told others about it - everyone likes it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
I wasn't too into this one. I'm a big fan of Steinbeck's fiction, but this memoir is rather dull. I was looking to hear what he had to say about the zeitgeist of America at the time he wrote it. But as an older man (as he even admits) he isn't as inspired to talk to or rub shoulders with people whom he crosses paths. The ones that he does writeabout come across as a bit uninspired. Nothing much happens on his journey and it almost seems like he doesn't have too much to say.
5-0 out of 5 stars Travels With Charlie, by John Steinbeck
Favorite memories of this book come from years ago when I could not put the book down as I read of Steinbecks travels with his poodle. For those whose minds wander and wonder about the roads, towns and people of the U.S., I highly recommend this book.I am purchasing it to read again.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great travel book, for awhile....
Great travel book. Imagery was good and the descriptions were more than adequate. I more than once thought I was right there and that's a good thing. However it sort of lost steam at the end and I truly believe Steinbeck got homesick during the travels, and tired of writing near the end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ride of a lifetime
This is a good resource. It points out many good sights to see.I used it for a trip between Bloomington, IL to Edmond, OK.The directions going West are much easier to understand that the ones going East, but not written in a way you can easily follow them backwards. It was deffinately a help in finding the road, although we did get off track a few times. We copied the pages we needed and put it in a plastic ziplock bag with a map. That helped a lot.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Good Women of China
This was good read which will leave most people with a lot to think about.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Repeat Offender" Comments:
I agree with Bill Oakes, I too must have received a different copy of Kirk's book than Bob Ward.Kirk's book IS a time saver--if I have time available for research, I have time to be out on Route 66.As a "repeat offender" I have used Kirk's M/C guide several times (I wish it had been been available for the "Inaugural Run!) both Eastbound and Westbound and found it easy to use, as accurate as most sources available, stores in my tank bag (I wish Kirk would reduce the size--tank bags are not created equal!) and was especially helpful in identifying "must see" icons of the Road.No single website (IMHO) has as much comprehensive, organized motorcycle specific touring information as Kirk has in this book.In retrospect, if I had Kirk's book and the map series he provides to all "Mother Road Rally" participants, I would have made fewer u-turns my first trip.Although Kirk's book is motorcycle oriented (it lists dealers, campgrounds and state specific laws) it can be used by all manner of travelers. So if you're considering "doin' Route 66" Kirk's book is a "primer!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just in time to set the mood for Halloween...
If Halloween is one of your favorite 'holidays' and you like being spooked and scared, then this book would be a great find for you. It's a compilation of eerie stories, just enough to give you goosebumps.Remember to keep the lights on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary Enough to Keep You Awake at Night...
And that's the truth. When I bought this book at Barnes and Noble last Friday (along with Conan: The Ultimate Guide to the World's Most Savage Barbarian), I got spooked when I first read it by myself. There is a wealth of information regarding the ghosts that haunt us from beyond, plus a vampire legend and serial killer legends. This is a great book, and it now sits on my closet shelf, along with all my other frequently-read books. I recommend it for anyone who has an interests in hauntings or spirits of the dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Beauty!A must read.
Such a beautiful book, recommended by our architect and builder for obtaining ideas on building a real Spanish Colonial or Revival house. The landscape designs were fantastic as well.Another reader wanted to see "beach shacks" and was disappointed by this book.I lived in Santa Barbara for 6 years and I can tell you have never traveled there. No beach shacks in Santa Barbara.Try along the eastern seaboard coastline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Santa Barbara Style is a must have...
