This book helped us to plan our trip. It details lodging inside the park as well as those hotels outside the park. It has maps of each of the Disney Resorts with tips on which rooms to ask for. We hadn't been to Disney World in 15 years and weren't sure what was there. This book told us all that and more. It gave us tips on what park attractions to see during different times of the day and numerous tips for dining, lodging and getting around the parks. It gives details of each and every attraction at Disney World and Universal. It rates the rides for various age groups. It rates the restaurants and food courts in various categories. We carried it in a backpack everywhere we went and referred to it often during our stay. I would recommend this book to anyone going to Disney World for the first time or the fifty fifth time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny and More!
Bought this book in anticipation of a trip to WDW in 2007, but got to use it on a spontaneous trip to WDW a couple of weeks ago. We had just one day to make our travel arrangements. Found a great package deal through Priceline for air, hotel (Dolphin) and car. Had one day at Magic Kingdom, and followed the books tips and touring plan. Saw almost all of the Kingdom in 12 hours, including all the top attractions. For a quick trip through the Magic Kingdom, this book was the only way we could have seen and done everything we did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
My family and I just returned from our first trip to Disney World. (It was as blast!) Because it was our first time and we were essentially clueless to the Disney experience, we bought several guides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Driven
If you're going to Boston and don't know you're way around, you will need this book. You will need to sit down and really look at it, and then keep it with you.If you get lost, don't try and use logic or common sense to unravel your path.Just pull over and get your map out, and make a plan before you try and inch your way back into traffic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I purchased this book for my son who is moving to Salem, Mass., from Michigan in August 2006. He took it with him when he went apartment hunting and said it was "a great help." He also used it to explore Boston. He found it to be very detailed. He liked the fact that it is spiral bound, staying open easily on the needed page. For myself, I found the print just a tad too small, but being 52, my eyesight is not what it was... My son did not find this a problem. In fact, he felt that with bigger print, the book would be increased in size unfavorably. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pittsburgh Then and Now, Revisited
Note well: this book is NOT the popular coffee table book of the same name: PITTSBURGH THEN AND NOW by Professor Arthur Smith (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1990). I was confused when I bought my copy. The original book is larger in format and offers more content (350 pages to 144). But while the 1990 book offers black-and-white images, this new version places the black-and-white vintage photos on the left side of the spread, and brilliant full-color contempary photos on the right side. Very nice. Author Walter C. Kidney is the historian for nonprofit Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. He does an excellent job of photo selection. I also like his captions, which are longer and more informative than the 1990 book. Finally, this is a great price for a quality picture book, but my heart sinks to see that it was printed in China, not Pittsburgh, or anywhere USA. ... Read more

Armchair movie aficionados beware! Leave your remote control behind and visit hundreds of famous movie locations in person! This one-of-a-kind travel guide (very few authors can claim that) is the result of exhaustive research covering hundreds of film shooting sites and is a must have for anyone who loves movies and the great outdoors. 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I give this book 3 stars because the pictures are beautiful and they made me go and visit the places pictured in the book. But, as another reviewer wrote, you can't cover all the Hawaiian islands in 150-200 pages. Way to little info about the islands and the sights. Ok if you want a quick overview, but not ok if you want details. I usually like the DK guide books, but this one was disappointing. The Ultimate Guide and the Rough Guide are much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love the photos at least
This book leaped out at me when I was in a bookstore the other day looking for books for our upcoming honeymoon to Hawaii. The pictures sold me. They're beautiful and most of the other Hawaii guides weren't so visually appealing. But the iinformation contained in the book was dissapointing. It was as skimpy as some of the bathing suits worn there! I'm going to buy or order another book or two to supplement this one. This will be the one I dream over, and the others will be for good solid practical info and advise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Travel Guide
I am a fan of the DK travel guides, and particularly like the color photography that allows readers to visualize the area more than most other travel guides. In reality I would like to give this guide 3.5 stars, but will have to settle for four. The photography is generally good, and the information is generally correct in my experience. This book features some excellent pointers that are especially good for those new to Hawaii. The book has a brief background section on the islands as a whole, and has decent island by island coverage of all the major Hawaiian Islands (certainly all the ones a tourist would visit.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative
Mongello is a long time Disney World fan who has written a trivia book that will give the reader a lot of information that the typical guidebook will not. Of particualr interest to me was info on the age of some of the attractions as well as some history on popular attractions that are no longer a part of Disney World(such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Mr. Toad;s Wild Ride, etc).

4-0 out of 5 stars Still your best bet for a DC travel guide
I rated the 2004 edition of this book at 5 stars, but this edition has slipped just a bit for containing outdated information and omissions of a few other things, so I would say it deserves a 4-and-a-half star rating.

I'd get my money back on this one, if I could. As a first-time traveler to NYC, I found this book absolutely less than worthless. It's probably better-suited to use by people who are experienced NY visitors, and are looking for new and different things to do, but even then I can't see how it would be worth spending the money for the hardcover. We made an honest try to use it, but found it essentially no help at all, and it spent the entirety of our trip sitting in a pile on the hotel dresser. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good but this is not really a funny book.
Underneath the mask of humor, light-heartedness and enthusiasm, the author is just plain frustrated and let's face it, not a major fan of the US. As an European (Eastern) who has been living here for 8 years (not just one, as the author did) I found most of his observations painfully accurate. Unlike him though, who could maybe notice those things and poke light-hearted fun at them knowing that he'll be back in his gorgeous, deeply human Italy very soon, to me those things are no longer funny. They are downright depressing. I really don't see how some people thought that he was "not laughing at Americans but with Americans". Na-ha. He actually WAS laughing at Americans. The myriad absurdities, idyosincrasies and almost non-human aspects of US life are unique to this part of the world. Quite a few "new arrivals" love the lifestyle, typically if they used to be very simple, materially and socially disadvantaged people in the place where they came from. Then of course they're bound to believe that all the junk that they now can afford to buy at the cheezy mall is the equivalent of "Heaven Found At Last". If you're born here - well, you've never known anything else, case closed. But if you landed in this place thinking that along with that promissing education program or work opportunity you'll also enjoy an actual LIFE - as in "the life of a more evolved, sophisticated human" - then you are in for major trouble: nostalgia for the World Old and constant longing for esthetics, good conversation, decent food, non-superficial individuals, etc. But then again, I finally understood that I am one of those that have NOTHING to do with the "American Dream". And obviously, so is the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read!
As an American who has lived in Italy since 2001 and has read countless pieces of writing on Italy by Brits and Americans -- I thoroughly enjoyed Severgnini's book! Many of the criticisms of it are correct, but, in all, it is insightful and plain funny. My husband and I (and many of our American friends in Italy) can certainly relate to his experience -- or his lack of experience with real estate advertisements and car sales and such.I recommend it to all of my American friends in Italy -- and we all get a great chuckle from his stories.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice cover.
Beppe Severgnini certainly seems to have mastered the English language, at least the British version. As for American, one has to wonder how much he comprehends of the idioms of everyday life in this vast country. (Many Europeans do not seem able to grasp the ramifications of living in a unified democracy the size of their entire continent.) The best part of his book is the cover, an amusing "Americanization" of the famous painting of Federico da Montefeltro by Piero della Francesca. It's easy to understand Severgnini's bemusement over "the sky is falling" tone of the endless weather forecasts on TV, or the sheer number of channels whose numbers don't match. It's widely known that Italians don't especially like air conditioning, but he himself experienced its blessed relief in the D.C. summer. His attitude toward the way Americans treat their children, which admittedly can be wildly overindulgent, is puzzling, however, in view of the way Italian mammas dote on their own offspring (especially sons). And I'll pit my own ability to spell against his any day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating picto-history timeline perspective of Cleveland!
I've been in Cleveland now for about 10 years, having moved here permanently to be with my wife.I'm always learning new things about this interesting and often vexing area.Even though I don't especially like living in the Cleveland/NE Ohio area today (this area has been hit hard economically, and it shows), this book has enabled me to learn much more about the glory, grit, and history of this interesting American city, in words and pictures.Cleveland proper was once the 5th largest American city, and the grandiosity and urban landscape and feel has been captured perfectly with the many turn of the century black & white classic photos of the downtown area, or 'Millionaires Row', just to name 2 geographical areas cited in this book! The 'side by side' juxtaposition of many of the classic 'then' pictures to the 'now' pictures, with many structures and/or buildings still standing, is eerily fascinating to say the least. If you live in NE Ohio, or go there often, this book is a MUST.You won't be able to put it down, and you will be mesmerized by Cleveland's humble industrial beginnings that helped mold NE Ohio into what it has become today! Also, looking at all the photos of people that existed 100 years ago makes you feel your own mortality as well. What is considered 'modern' today will be 'classic' or 'retro' tomorrow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really opened my eyes!
After seeing this book sitting on a coffee table at the local Crate&Barrel in Cleveland, I was absolutely drawn into the pictures of what Cleveland, my hometown, used to look like. I never realized the transformation the "Comeback City" had made over the years. Seeing the early construction of Terminal Tower and pictures including Millionaire's Row, Public Square, The Gateway, The Mall and the Lakefront changed my opinion of what our downtown actually contains. Seeing the age of what some remaining buildings in downtown showed how historic Cleveland is, and made me want to go downtown and explore. After doing that, I saw so many new things that I never knew were in Cleveland. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who loves Cleveland or would like to find out more about the history of the "Comeback City." One of the best coffee table books you will ever find! The other six books in the series (New York, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, St. Louis and Los Angeles) are just as amazing and I strongly encourage everyone to read them all!

4-0 out of 5 stars My How Things Change........
I have been a Cleveland history buff for years and have taken plenty of "Then and Now" pictures on my own. I have been waiting for a book like this to come out for a long time. I have other then-and-now books for other cities and I'm glad one had finally come out for cleveland.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I live here, she knows my name.
I live here. Heather knows my name. I know hers. I'm even rated a quick mention in her book. But there are many people in town she doesn't know. Heather doesn't get to the trailer courts and the local convenience store all that often. And in all fairness, the publishers were the ones who slapped the title on this book. Heather's Haines is just that Heather's Haines. It is Haines as seen through 'A Prairie Home Companion' liberal vision of life. On the surface it is all embracingly fair, painting a picture of wonderful quirky resilient people all moving, even if unconsciously, towards a politically correct utopia. Yet the reality is of course quite different.
5-0 out of 5 stars I can relate
I live in rural Colorado and first moved here from New York City just after graduate school.Heather's accounts and comparisons of living in a small town in Alaska I can relate to. Opportunities are limited but adventure is bountiful. Her stories and feelings sound so familiar to me it is like looking in the mirror. The sections in between the chapters "Duly Noted" bring the characters and flavor of the community to life.Somehow I never quite thought of a cemetary as a multi-residential district but I guess it is.The residents just don't move.If you are thinking Alaska is for you read this book first.I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.By the way I picked this book up because I am going to Alaska next year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pearls of neighborly wisdom
Heather Lende's neck of the woods--Haines, Alaska-- is a place where the name of the game is subsistence, and the surroundings are both breathtakingly beautiful and frequently downright dangerous.

5-0 out of 5 stars roadfood-tested
I tested the roadfood book by Jane Stern on my last trip to Oregon and I was not disapointed! The razor clams (for breakfast)as recommended at Camp 18 in Elsie were delicious, and the cinnamon roll that we got to go was humungous. The little seafood restaurant Dan and Louies tucked away in the heart of Portland is not to be missed! Roadfood will not lead you down the wrong road, Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for those who hate chain restaurants!
Whenever we travel, we consult Jane and Michael Stern's excellent "Road Food" a guide to some great eats. They have steered us to some wonderful barbecue in the South, incredible lobster rolls in Maine, outstanding burgers in the Midwest, and some of the best desserts we have ever had.Over the years their tips and insights have helped keep many small, mom-and-pop operations alive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Always in the car!
When planning a road trip .. First use the Atlas .. Then pick up this Roadfood book and hit all the places along the way. Have a suggestion? Submit it to the Roadfood Web Site and chances are, they will visit it and include your suggestion in Volume 3.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't do Route 66 without it!
An invaluable tool for travelling Route 66 from beginning to end, as important as your vehicle. This book will keep you on track, informed, and make things "EZ" for you.I just used this book on a two-week trip (Sept 2006), and couldn't imagine doing it without this guide.(Although Illinois is very well signed and easy to follow on it's own.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and User-Friendly
This book has all that I want to undertake a 2-3 week drive along the entire length of Route 66. The maps are comprehensive without overburdening the traveller with too much detail. There are alternative routes suggested and the major roads are clearly indicated if you have to catch up time or move around an accident site or similar long-delay issue. There are restaurant reviews and accommodations suggestions. Must-see locales are clearly indicated and there are many common-sense points made as well. I like the book-size format rather than the large fold-out map. We are really lookinfg forward to doing Route 66 and expect that EZ66 will be the bible on the seat for our vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY A GREAT GUIDE
In many places Route 66 is not marked or easy to find, so if you're going to take a Route 66 trip, you'll want the best guide. The EZ66 Guide is it.I've seen most of the maps and guides for Route 66 and this is by far, the best!!It is easy to use going west or east, it has spiral binding which makes it easy to keep open to any page while you're driving along and it shows you some of the older stretches of the route too.We don't have young kids, but the games look fun... O.K. we played a few!!The author's wonderful artwork is an added plus!! ... Read more
