5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
This is the top dog for off road books.I've driven several of these courses in my stock Chevrolet truck with zero problems.Beautiful lay-out, great descriptions and GPS coordinates.Get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Lot
I have read several other map books for off road trails, etc. and this one is by far the most comprehensive and accurate. My wife and I have used this book on a couple of trips now and the accuracy of the directions is uncanny.I also apprciate the GPS coordinates and the maps in the book itself. The fact that this book is all color is awesome too.I would definitely buy this book if you're in the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for off road adventures!
This is the most thorough resource for off road travel I have seen.I found some beautiful and fun roads near my home town that I was completely unaware of.This book is perfect for those who have stock vehicles and want to enjoy the backroads. You will know in advance whether your vehicle can handle the route without getting damaged or stuck.(Yes, there are also some more difficult roads in the book for those who are equipped and need a challenge.)

4-0 out of 5 stars PALM BEACH
To almost anyone, Tiffany and Co. and Palm Beach would go hand and hand, analagous like Lalique and Monte Carlo. The concept for this book is very interesting and the author fully realizes how to exploit the two to their most advantagious. The text is highly informative and the images are crisp and beautifully presented.I agree with one of the reviews that this is an expensive coffee table book, but frankly im sure those interested in this sort of thing, will not think twice about the price of admission.Really a wonderful book on a very interesting subject, well done indeed.

4-0 out of 5 stars FANTASY LAND
This book shows that given enough money there is no limit to how young, thin and attractive your wife can be.And apparently there is no limit to the hubris of the rich--designer wine cellars on a hurricane prone barrier island.

Editorial Review

"On any person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow thegift of loneliness and the gift of privacy." So begins E.B. White's classic meditation on that noisiest, most public of American cities. Written during the summer of 1948, well after the author and editor had taken up permanent residence in Maine, Read more

HERE IS NEW YORK is a truly spectacular 1948 essay that originally appeared in Holiday magazine.Written by E.B. White and named one of the ten best books ever written about New York, this is a quick read that will leave you years later savoring White's timeless observations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our July in Hawaii
We just returned after spending one solid month on the Big Island. It wasn't until we got there that we realized a guidebook was absolutely essential and we picked this one up at a bookshop in Hilo. After that essential was out of the way, our exploration of the island really began. This book scored big points for accuracy and wealth of outdoor information. The only trail we found closed was to Alakahi Falls so scratch that one off your list. There's a whole section on biking and another on camping and we had time to do both.We would recommend this guide to anyone seeking a supercharged Hawaiian experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hikers dream
This is the only travel book going with me when I go to the big island. The details in the book are great, and I look forward to seeing how accurate the directions are. If you want to get off the beaten track, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book
We were impressed with the huge scope of information and activities they fit into 256 pages. The trek into Waipio Valley filled up the whole day and was one of the most memorable days of all our vacations. Most tourists descend in vans and are zipped out in an hour. What a beautiful untouched place! It was tempting to swim at the beach but the advice in the book changed our minds. If you go, be sure to take this hike. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Relocation Resource
As just one component of your relocation research this is a great tool. While it is hard to question the underlying research presented in the book you have to look for nuances in the recommendations the authors make to gain a better understanding of a particular area. These carefully worded nuances are a critical part of gaining a true picture of the "Best Place" being rated.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK.
There is a lot of information here.We especially liked the 100 `family' places around the country, but isn't that what any suburb is anyway?Still, the selections are interesting.
5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening research
I can't begin to imagine the work that went into putting this book together.I'm on my second time reading it through and I've already learned about the ins and outs of 20 or 30 neighborhoods that weren't even on my radar before.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will make good use of this anchorage guide!!!
The graphic images will surely help our crew find appropriate and safe anchorages in the British Virgin Islands in our upcomming bareboat catamaran cruise.I hope the authors will keep up the good work and produce other works like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful when sailing in the Virgin Islands
We first saw this book in the nav station on a Moorings boat that we chartered in the British Virgin Islands. We looked it over and thought "These pictures are gorgeous. Why do they include it? Maybe they want to sell it to us." The Moorings doesn't sell it and, as of Summer 2004, they are not including new copies on boats because too many people took them home. It is a gorgeous picture book of anchorages in the Virgin Islands. It is not just a pretty picture book though.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price
We just finished a bareboat charter trip to BVI and found that we were frequently referring to this book.It was extremely usefull in locating moorings and anchorages.I would recommend it highly. The only negative is that there were some areas missing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the Gazetteer
I would not want to be without this map when referring to locations throughout the state of Maine. The gazetteer is an invaluable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definite MUST HAVE for any Maine traveler

5-0 out of 5 stars Maine Bible
The Maine Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme should also be known as "The Maine Bible."Every Mainer should own one.All too often I've tried those web sites that are supposed to give you driving directions, and inevitably they give me an error message saying "that location was not found" when I try to get directions to places in rural Maine. You'll never have to worry about that with the Gazetteer.Every Maine city, town, village or plantation is listed in this book, no matter how obscure it is. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Memories
If you're an aging Baby Boomer, as I, and lived in the Chicago area sometime during your childhood, chances are this little book with touch your heart and bring back the fondest of memories. It's a sweet compilation of everything that's reminiscent of a journey to "downtown" Chicago during the Christmas season. Whether it be parades, shopping, choosing a new toy for under the tree, or perhaps lunching at the Walnut Room at Marshall Fields, this book hits all the high points. Touching photo's also round out the successful tale of Christmas on State Street. Sit back with a cup of cocoa and savor the memories!

4-0 out of 5 stars Christmas in Chicago
Generally very good nostalgia. More variety in stores would be appreciated. However, I realize information is limited by historically available photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Chicago Christmas!
This is a beautifully arranged book detailing the opulence and grandeur of Christmas in Chicago.Amazing black and white photos capture the charm of the holidays in the Windy City.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but a couple complaints
This highly detailed map is an invaluable reference but its size and layout make it cumbersome to refer to on the go.Also there's no overlap from one page to the next.If your route is in the middle of the page, you're in luck! But going from Asheville to neighboring Black Mountain requires flipping among 4 different pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars A compromised but required series of maps
For years I refused to buy this road atlas because it got the name and length of the 1970's era street I live on wrong. In fact, I noted several errors within the vicinity that I'm most familiar with. That said, it's still the only serious contender for a reasonably decent compendium of local maps. I finally broke down and bought a copy because so many birding and canoeing resources reference the "Delorme" as it's usually called locally. It's no real alternative to having very detailed USGS topo maps of any area of intense interest, but I'll give it credit for being a reasonably compact, (by large, bulky, car use standards), version of a state map. It's position is between that of the free Dept of Transportation maps and the highly detailed local maps that can be purchased from convience stores for road use, and from the better outdoor provision and recreational companies for topographical and lake and shore details. For what it is, it's definitely worth the price. Just don't expect it to be the last local map you'll buy. It's a compromise all the way around. But, sometimes a compromise is the best solution. That said, I went ahead and got the one for SC, and will probably get the one for VA as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars delorme gazetteer series
the delorme gazeteer series is perfect for people who want to wander off of the main roads.my wife and i like to point the car as whim sees fit.the map has backroads with enought detail to let us find our wish and our way back.essential for indirect travel.also has marked 4wd trails to unknown wonders, as well as a smattering of known wonders (waterfalls, museums, fishing, camping...).not a replacement for usgs quads, but will make the travel to your hike more fun.if you are interested in exploring a state, or some portion thereof, the gazetteer series is an invaluable tool. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What responsibility does an outsider have when confronted with others' evil?
While Californian Becky Royer is visiting relatives in Virginia, war breaks out between Virginia and Ohio. Ohio has armed the local African Americans and launched a designer virus, but with the virus, travel is shut down and Becky is stuck in a tiny town in western Virginia (what is West Virginia in our reality). Also trapped in the same town is Justin Monroe. Justin claims to be from Virginia, but he is from an alternate time-line--a time line where travel across the time-lines was discovered. The Time Traders travel across the time lines to collect resources for their resource-dependent civilization, to sabotage any efforts by others to discover the secret of time-line travel, and occasionally to do good. Right now, though teens Justin and Becky have to deal with the attraction--and with Becky's (correct) certainty that Justin is hiding something important about himself.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Great Alternatives From Turtledove
Here is the fourth of Harry Turtledove's exciting Crosstime Traffic series. Its alternative history with a twist:Crosstime Traffic is a giant corporation in the late 21st century US which controls the secret of traveling to parallel worlds through transposition chambers. The science is a bit woolly and largely goes unexplained by Turtledove, but it doesn't really matter.
4-0 out of 5 stars superb alternate history science fiction tale
Time Traders laterally travel from our realm to other timelines to sell slightly better products than the locals make. Each Time Trader knows that when one is a Crosstime Traffic trader they must never display too much technological superiority as blending in with the more backwoods natives is the key to success.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Offbeat Wonders of Maryland! }8#>(Goatman Smile)
This brought back many memories of my childhood when I grew up with some of the many urbans legends looked at in this entertaining volume! Inexplicably enduring figures as the Goat Man, the Bunny Man, and the Snallygaster are shown with such real life characters as Moll Dyer, persecuted as a witch and the notorious crime mistress Patty Cannon. One of the nice touches is the inclusion of current colorful characters in the state, such as horror show host Count Gore Devol and eccentric art entrepreneur Joe of Ocean Gallery in Ocean City. I won't go into any more detail because the sheer volume of surprises is worth many times the price! Initially, I was disappointed that precise locations of many of these wonders were not included but there are understandable reasons given for the omissions, but it can also be said that being easy to find would cheapen them. These wonderful secrets make me appreciate living in the Old Line State even more! There was so much more that could have been added that I could not give it a full five stars...but that is what future editions are for! I can't wait for the next one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting peek into small-town life, but don't read it while you're eating
You know that small, faded town you pass through on your way to Somewhere Else? These are the folks who live there. Having grown up in New Auburn, Wisconsin, but moving away to make his way in the world, writer Michael Perry returns home some years later and joins the local fire department as a way of reconnecting with his community. In the book he alternates between relating his experiences as a small-town volunteer firefighter and first-responder and giving fleeting glimpses into the lives and personalities of some of his teammates and fellow residents. The detailed emergency calls were fun to read about, but more than once I made the mistake of reading while having lunch! I generally don't pick up many non-fiction books, but I read this as part of the "Eden Prairie Reads" community program (www.epreads.org).

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous book I have given to friends
I have passed this book along to many and recommended it to even more- it is well written, interesting and touching. The author is an EMT in his small town of New Auburn WI- pop 485 and the town's folk - his neighbors and friends -are portrayed with true warmth and humor. There are passages in this book that are so evocative of the human experience I cried - and so did my husband who read it upon my recommendation. It was passed to me a friend and I have given a number of copies and have to keep buying one "for myself."Well worth the time and money- a little gem of a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perry = an approachable volunteer and wordsmith
This was an excellent read, by all accounts. The author's ability to articulately convey time, imagery, flavor, and life was superb.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Effort
I've had this book for several years and I've found it to be a very useful resource. The hatch charts are extremely helpful, especially for trout anglers. While the author made a better than average attempt to cover the warmwater opportunities in the Keystone State, for the most part only the most well known sites were covered. While Pennsylvania has some world famous trout streams, the variety and quality of our warmwater fisheries is truly extraordinary. Some of the streams that were covered specifically for the trout they hold probably offer better bass fishing over most of their length.Trout centered thinking is far too common in the fly fishing community and as a result this sort of overemphasis on trout is typical of many fly fishing guides.Indeed, the Pennsylvania Fish Commission is guilty of killing thousands of trout annually by stocking them in waters so warm they are sure to die by Memorial Day.I know that Mr. Wolf is a skilled and avid warmwater fly fisher.I hope in the future he will update this guide and give our warmwater fisheries the coverage they deserve.

3-0 out of 5 stars flyfisher's Guide to Pennsylvania by Dave Wolf
If you are looking for a book to give you general knowledge on better known trout fishing streams in Pennsylvania, then this book will meet your needs.Unfortunately, the author does not do a good job of covering remote streams in many parts of the state that are excellent producing streams and beautiful places to fish.I was especially disappointed in his lack of coverage of streams in McKean and Warren County.I would not recommend this book to an avid Pennsylvania fisherman. The book is adequate for an out-of-state fisherman who is looking to fish some of the more popular streams in PA.
