5-0 out of 5 stars The first and best guide to grab
If you're wondering about a restaurant in NYC, the first (and only) guide to grab is Zagat's.More efficient than the internet, if not as detailed.Very easy to read up on a place before you go.It's the one guide locals and tourists can both agree on.The only challenge is keeping current, as the restaurant scene changes so quickly.Get the 2005 version, and you're already out of date!

5-0 out of 5 stars There is no other ---
..and there is no substitute for an updated Zagat for NYC where restaurants open and close faster than in other cities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Zagat Restaurant Survey slipping
The Zagat Survey of NYC Restaurants is becoming less and less useful. Rather than serving as a valuable means of "tracking" the progress of restaurant quality, as some have alleged, the Survey increasingly takes on the role of "cheerleader," as evidenced by the steadily increasing trend of ratings (e.g. a 20 Food rating in place of an 18 several years ago for comparable quality) and by the growing predominance of "upbeat" quotes in the reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood Then and Now
I had been so impressed with the quality and accuracy of Rosemary Lord's book LOS ANGELES THEN AND NOW that I was delighted to find this new book HOLLYWOOD THEN AND NOW. It is brilliant and fascinating. This is an impressive, informative history of Hollywood. I worked in the Hollywood Motion Picture Industry during much of this time and Lord has captured the world I remember so well. I was pleased to see this book on the L.A. Times Bestseller List in January when it first came out and have bought several copies as they make great gifts. I look forward to her next book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed
I was given this book by a friend because he knows I was raised in Hollywood and love the history of the area. The archival photographs are quite nicely reproduced, however, the current photographs are very poor. I enjoy digital photography and was in Hollywood a few weeks ago and visited the same historic scenes from this book. I quite easily found the angle of the original shots found in this book.. why this book showed those same shots but taken from different angles than the original photos is beyond me. The modern photos in this book are also very unflattering, out of focus and even amateur in appearance... not much more than snapshots.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars woodalls north american campground directory 2005
This is the first book we bought about anything related to camping and we brought it with us on our second trip. It was a life saver. We wanted to stop somewhere else on our way home and were able to find all the information we needed. The size of our space is important to us along with privacy and distance to local attractions. We found a lot of that information at each areas listing, along with a map of each state. Every camper needs a directory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Woodalls
Excellent book, sometimes the woodalls ratings are quite my opinion but otherwise a great source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woodall's NA Campground Directory has got it all
The directory is great. You can find all the campgrounds in the area by looking up the city name.It tells you all the facilities available at the campground. You can find the phone number, web site information...anything that you need in order to make reservations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overall climbing guide
If you don't know where in JTree you would like to climb or if you plan on doing a little bit of all kinds of climbing, this is the book to have.It provides an overview for the whole area with great maps and photographs to easily locate all rocks (and there is a lot of them so the book is thick). Some of the maps and info are out of date and need to be replaced (the Hidden Valley campground/Intersection Rock map and information about showers).I also found myself constantly writing on the map page references for the different rocks. It may also be nice to include a guide on all major toprope, bouldering, and sport climbing sections, although these exist on the web.Overall, I had an amazing trip and knew where to go every day, I just wish I had more than 5 days to climb there.Ooooh, also the book doesn't tell you that you will have no finger tips left or that the ratings are really hard and you shouldn't use them :-)A 5.10c in JTree is apparently not a 5.10c anywhere else, but this is a one of a kind place!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the book.
There are others out there, but Vogel's Rock Climbing Joshua Tree is the definitive overall guide that both new and experienced climbers rely upon. However, for more detailed information on routes in specific areas of Joshua Tree (Lost Horse, Indian Cove, Hidden Valley, etc.), don't leave home without Alan Bartlett's excellent guides.
4-0 out of 5 stars Missing details, but great guide
This is a very comprehensive guide to Joshua Tree for climbers. It is the book that we always take with us as the defintive reference. Generally, the information is accurate and the maps detailing which rock is which in various formations is quite good.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, would be more interesting if I lived in Eastern PA
Weird Pennsylvania could have been more appropriately named "Weird Eastern Pennsylvania" as I'd say upwards of 80% of the info in it is centered toward the Philly side of the state. It was stil a fun and interesting read, but I'd have loved to have learned about more weirdness on the Western half of PA.Come on, I live here, I know there's all kinds of weirdness to be found! :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Would have been better titled "Ghostbusters - Pennsylvania Edition"
I ordered this book after reading a brief review of it in my local newspaper. From the review, I understood the book to contain odd Pennsylvania history, traditions, and locations--interesing and humorous items. I ordered it blindly, which was my own mistake. Upon receving the book, I was disappointed to see that much of the content focuses on the supernatural--something that I have no interest in. Unfortunately, the newspaper review made no mention of that.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate adventure guide to Pennsylvania.
Being the avid ghost hunter that I am, I absolutely love this book. There are so many interesting places in Pennsylvania I had no idea about! And not all are haunted, many are just interesting natural phenomena. This book not only gives you the history of weird places in PA, but personal accounts, and even some directions. I recommend this for any adventuresome person that likes to explore Pennsylvania. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for me Lonely Planet USA
so fast shipping and good information to travel USA

5-0 out of 5 stars The best suggestions for the best prices
If you are going to travel to/across USA Lonely Planet USA is a suitable and practical guide, in spite of its size. The suggestions about hotels, restaurants, sightseeing, sports and routes include both traditional touristic places and alternatives points too. The "author's choices" are great and help you a lot to choose the best options for small budgets. It works as a trustful friend telling you about the best things to do in your next travel. More maps showing cities and roads would be very useful in the next editions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enough for my 7-state road trip
The book definitely proved useful in my first experience with LP guides: if it didn't already have the information, it would at least point you in the right direction as to where to get it. Though the information for big cities like NY, San Fran and Chicago are limited, it's extremely easy to pick up free guides in those cities anyways, so it doesn't matter too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp, interesting photos
This volume bests many other photographic books about Brooklyn because the book format is large and "landscape" shape (the photos measuring 10 x 6.75" inches), the individual photos are sharp (where other books too often have muddy reproduction), the subject matter is interesting, and the captions accurate.I think I know my Brooklyn, as I have explored it for sixty years.I have not yet found an error in the text. Because the author usually positions the camera in the "now" scene close to where it was in the "then" scene, the photos are exceptionally interesting. For instance, page 86 shows the Hanover Club, Bedford and Rodney Street, in 1893.The "now" photo shows it as a yeshiva, with the details of the pedestrian, the "Don't walk" signs, and yellow school bus.A "circa 1908" photo of Times Plaza shows the same Interborough head building (then a fare collection area) that I walked past last month. The author earns extra stars for including people in most photos. This book is far more than a book of Brooklyn buildings. The streets are alive!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Picture Book of Brooklyn Then and Now--Yes!
I was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and so enjoyed looking at pictures of places I knew as a child-- a nice contrast of way back when and today. My family lived in North & South Williamsburg from the 1820s to 1920s before heading to Sunset Park, Bay Ridge and Glendale. I really enjoyed seeing the photos along with an explanation of how the neighborhoods have changed.I bought an extra book to give to a friend who grew up in Sheepshead Bay/Marine Park/Coney Island. A nice compendium. :>)

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeping change captured beautifully
The greatest borough of the greatest city on Earth deserves its own special history, and Marcia Reiss has provided it. BROOKLYN THEN AND NOW is a reminder that Manhattan is not the only place that underwent enormous changes over the last century and a half. Capturing Brooklyn in recent photos and juxtaposing them with shots of the same area 50, 75, 100 or 125 earlier, dramatizes the growth that Brooklyn (the fourth largest city in America before the 1898 consolidation) experienced. It's too bad that you can't "take a look inside" this book on this website, but take my word for it, it's jammed with great photos! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
I heard the author on NPR and thought the book sounded promising. I expected to discover a wonderful family experience of four people locked for days in a car; I really wanted to know these people. I expected an enjoyable trip. Instead, Mr. Sullivan gave me a synopsis of every book he'd read about Lewis and Clark, and more trivia than I wanted to know. This author even turned a brother/sister backseat conversation about Barbie into a mindboggling trivia fact sheet. Mr. Sullivan, I wanted to know you and your family; instead, I'm afraid I learned only about you. Frankly, on a road trip, you're a bore.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cross Country
I wanted to like this book---I really did. In fact, I wanted to like it so much that I kept plodding all the way to the end despite the fact that I found it boring most of the time. I love books about cross-country travel, but this one had so much of what I considered just "padding" to fill pages. There were a few gems in the book, but not enough for me to recommend it to someone. It's as if he felt a compulsion to record all of his thoughts regardless of how inane they were or how meaningless they would be to the reader. The book represents a great concept poorly executed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I picked up this book because I was considering a road trip and was looking for inspiration: the 15 yrs and 90 000 miles part of the title led me to believe the author would have a lot to share. Instead I found myself wading through details too personal to empathise with (why should I care that Multnomah Falls is special to you because you once met a woman in an New York elevator wearing a Multnomah Falls belt?), underwritten by endless references to Lewis & Clark (if I'm as interested in them as you assume, wouldn't The Journals of Lewis & Clark be a better purchase?).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any Ohio fisherman
I like to scout out small lakes off the beaten path, and this Atlas has proven invaluable to me.Picture this:If you cut out all the pages and re-assembled them into a one-piece map it would be as roughly as big as the average front yard!Hardly anything is left out, including many small farm pond sized bodies of water. My best discovery to date was a tiny 'lake' South of Columbus, Ohio, with a picture of a fish on it.I made the short trip and proceeded to catch a 6 pound Bass out of it- unheard of in the more heavily populated lakes around Columbus.

This book is a spectacular visual text to some of the American National Parks. The size of the photos, and their photographic quality, are just excellent. The photos are right up there with National Geographic-type quality. In addition, the accompaning text gives ecological insights to where and why this part of the United States was designated and saved as a National Park. The book gives short but insightful accompanying text for each of the Parks that are presented to the reader. The only problem is, unfortunately, the organization of the chapters, and a very skimpy table of contents, and the reader can get easily annoyed with these two problems. It is hard to understand why the publisher made such errors, as the problems are very obvious, and the whole book suffers as a result. It is a beautiful book covering many of the National Parks, with super photos and very good college level text, and if you can put up with the problems of a missing table of contents, this book is a great collection of art, ecology, and the National Parks of the USA.A 5-star for the photos and accompanying text, and a 3 for a useless table of contents.Sorry, but the publisher made major mistakes in putting this otherwise spectacular book together. But I will still give the book a 5-star anyway. The photos and text are just too good to give this book anything less than a 5-star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
This is a beautifully presented, simply and elegantly written book of Wolf Kahn's work, of which it is hard not to be a great fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This book is beautifully presented, with a large number of colour plates of his oil and pastel paintings.I really enjoyed the sensitive, well written and interesting story by Wolf about his travels across America and his findings along the way.He shows its not necessarily the subject that makes the painting but how you treat it and Wolf is a master of atmosphere and luminous colur to the max.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Colors

5-0 out of 5 stars I have lazy eye
Even with lack of proper stereoscopic vision, due to serious lazy eye, the figures appear vivid and dimensional. The book includes a set of postcards that may be sent to taunt the less fortunate who haven't witnessed the wonders herein.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Novelty Worth Having
As a California historian and author of the book: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this California pop-up to be a charmingly fun novelty book to share when company comes over.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real California - in Three Dimensions
The book looks like it might just be a decorative coffee table item, but the content belies that impression. The pop-ups are fun and attractive, but the real story is in the choice of objects and the writing. The selections speak to the myth of California that was consciously created by early explorers, developers, and movie moguls but became its own reality as people migrated to the state ready to play the roles the myth-makers created for them. In exposing the history through objects and some remarkable writing by such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn See, Graham Nash, Alice Waters, Terry Gilliam, and Richard Rodriguez, the pre-mythic history and the development of a true California culture emerges...one in which the tinsel is a little tarnished around the edges, but glows as brightly as ever with its own special light. ...
