5-0 out of 5 stars A must for pilots too
Even though pilots use detailed maps called sectionals, they just don't give you much detail about the mountains and landmarks you pass. Benchmark does a great job of labeling all the mountains, passes, and other major landmarks a pilot can use to navigate.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wait for 4th edition
While I love this map to pieces (literally my 2nd edition; 100+ road trip later, dirt, duct tape & all), I have art issues with the 3rd edition. While it is a well layed out atlas style book, the mountain ranges have too much contrast, which makes the smallest of dirt roads hard to read, esp. at 11pm -- with a dome light (or flashlight). Finding a good camp spot can be easier with the newest edition, which they may have corrected the landscape problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for off highway adventures
Just got into dirt biking around SoCal, and this atlas has good detail for forest service roads, jeep trails, railroad and utility rights of way, etc. A bit large to carry on the bike, but worth th effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only guidebook you need (just add a detailed Muni bus route map and you are set for weeks of fun)
I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to guidebooks.I don't believe that there is one-size-fits all guidebook, and when I travel, I get an arsenal of books and select the top three to use on the road.Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I needed no other guidebook to San Francisco! As a general rule, Lonely Planet guides are the most compact and info-packed books on the market, and this guide is unparalleled. It fits neatly in any purse or backpack and the only add-on I would recommend for your trip is a detailed Muni bus route map. 4-0 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet is the way to go!
I travel a lot and a Lonely Planet book of my destination is always in my carry-on. This SF book was very helpful for my sister and I who recently went on a 'girls shopping weekend' up there (from the L.A. area). We did manage to find all the great shops (thanks to the 'Shopping' section) and then have time for some sightseeing on the side. All the directions, maps, addresses, opening times, admission costs, etc. were accurate and precise. The transportation maps are especially helpful in a city like San Francisco where a rental car is not only not necessary but can definitely be a burden (not much parking!). The book also provided interesting facts about historical sites such as Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. I recommend this book to anyone who is traveling to San Francisco whether it be for a weekend or a month or anywhere in between. There is enough stuff in this book to keep you busy, I promise! And it's very easy to use and has a nice Index in the back where everything is possible to find =)

5-0 out of 5 stars grain of salt
I used this guidebook for my first visit to San Francisco and liked where it took me.I just moved here and needed to acclimate. I think it's geared more for younger tourists that are less set in their ways.I wanted to see more than just San Francisco and used the Golden Gate Trailblazer to fill in places to hike around. They were a nice duo to carry around. After two weeks, I'm finally getting the hang of it and less dependent on the maps. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Chicago
I used to live in Chicago, and I can tell you that had I had this book back then, I would have visited lots of places I never knew existed or didn't fully appreciate at the time. As in most DK Travel Guides, there's lots of information, photos, maps and graphs.4-0 out of 5 stars Chicago
Great book, but not as great as other books from that series.

4-0 out of 5 stars good, but missing some
The ethnic neighborhoods, which Chicago is quite famous for, is barely mentioned and offers no instructions on how to visit them. This book is much thinner than the other Eyewitness city Guides. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Georgia oh Georgia
Well it seems Sherman could not burn all of Georgia. This is a wonderful book on a very deserving subject, Gleasons books are always well done and the photography just pops off the page.Georgia is graced with many grand plantation homes and this books does a credible job of capturing the most beautiful. If you are someone the least bit interested in Georgia or the Old South, then I believe you will be pleased with this book, it is an excellent companion to Gleasons books on the plantations of Louisiana, Virginia, and the Antebellum homes of Natchez. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
We bought an early edition of this book, and have found it wanting. Yes, there were some good shopping recommendations. But the ratings for restaurants and many other points of interest are just not that good.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible for every trip to NYC
The 'List by Item' at the front of the store and restaurant chapters is invaluable. The boxed tidbits make this guide book easier and more enjoyable to read. With the changing of NYC the author's suggestion of calling a business before a visit sure makes sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars gerry frank's new york

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Atlas I have ever saw on Alaska
Complete, detailed, with all information you may need. A must and in a large format. If you plan to travel to Alaska by any means, do not miss this!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point for Planning
The sheer size of Alaska tends to defeat what would otherwise be an unbeatable map collection for most states in the lower 48.A second challenge is the very thin transportation infrastructure in Alaska; huge areas of the state are not on the limited road network and can be reached in a timely manner only by air.Enormous swaths of wilderness have no transportation network at all.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-buy for those driving in Alaska
This atlas is a tremendous fount of information for those travelling Alaska or even just interested. It even has GPS coordinates! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!Great Book!
This book is actually the "textbook" for the pen and ink drawing class that I am taking.I bought it ahead of time and read it in 2 days!I had a hard time putting it down and now that I am finished I keep going back to it to discover the clever ways Mr. Gregory depicts life in the big city and abroad. What he has to say ranges from being dramatic to funny and interesting. He takes the every day things we take for granted and makes them into something worth taking a second look at.I am thinking of buying all of the books he writes.....This is good stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars From the heart
Wow! I really got a surprise when I started reading this book - it's very honest. When I received the book (along with 2 others on subject of keeping a journal) I was rather dismayed by the cover - thinking it was just another "cute" book - but, I was very pleasantly surprised. This small book is the most inspiring tome I've read yet on journaling. The author, Danny Gregory spreds his emotions and thoughts on the page - just like peanut butter on bread. Try it, you'll want more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Life-Changing Stuff
Combine this book with Danny's other gift to all of us, Creative License, and you might just change your life. You used to draw, of course you did. To paraphrase Danny's kid: "Did you forget?" Live in the moment, see the beauty in all things, slow down, and draw. (Or pick up some other art, even if it's gardening. All things creative are life-affirming.) Go for it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ehh, I took it, I used it, I found the errors
The errors in this guidebook, let me count them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary to have before going to DC
I looked at a number of books dedicated to providing advice for travel to Washington DC. I purchased this one after reading the reviews and reading the sample pages. And I was not disappointed. I found the information here to be very accurate and readable. It provided the basicfacts needed to plan a good trip. We spent a total of 5 days in DC, and though I've been there twice before, I relied on the advice from these authors. Never once was I disappointed. If I ever spend as much time in another city that the authors have researched, I will not hesitate to purchase that book as well. Too many first-time tourists whom we met during our time in DC did not have a good idea of what they were doing, and I believe they probably ended up wasting a lot of valuable time in a city that is chock-full of things to do. Several times I was able to make a quick decision in just a couple of minutes by looking the information up by using the handy index.
5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to improve your visit to D.C.
Like the other Unofficial Guides we've used, this book paid for itself with the first piece of advice we looked up!After that, I scanned cover-to-cover, and by the end of the book we had a great sense of which attractions we wanted to visit and how to go about arranging our days.A gold-mine of tips for touring the places that are hard to get into in the post-9/11 era. It's also packed with information on neat things to see and do off the beaten path. You can't go wrong with this one! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Insight into Place and Community.
Bill McKibben describes a walk through place and community. The community is bound by a geographic region but the displaced reader is imperceptiblydrawn into the mind-set of McKibben and his guests. You are introduced to a group who love the land on the Vermont/New York border and recognise it as one of the few "wild" places left in America. It is their passion to preserve and conserve that comes through and it is infectious. The book inspires the reader to analyse their relationship to place and modes of behaviour driven by place. The antithesis of economic consumption exists in all of us, however repressed. Bill brings it to the fore. The effect on the distant reader is such that you will join the community despite being so far way. Bravo Bill !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Bill McKibben's "Wandering Home"
Bill McKibben walks for sixteen days through the Adirondack Mountains to share his love of the land with his readers but what makes the book so special are the people Bill introduces, walks with, and talks with (and about...) along his journey. I was a Travel Agent for five years and was lucky enough to be sent to some of the best, first class places in America and this journey that Bill McKibben takes us on with his words is more meaningful than many of those places I went to which include the Grand Canyon & Scottsdale, AZ; the San Francisco Bay Area; Paradise Island & Nassau, Bahamas; Manhattan; the Sierra-Nevada Mountains (by train); and New Orleans & Mississippi River Cruise!
4-0 out of 5 stars Thin but worth reading
This book is thin.I mean literally. It is really just a somewhat longish essay.I was disappointed that there was not more depth, more history, more "more." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite- my husband's as well as mine!
My husband and I both like to cook. We have quite a varied collection of cookbooks, and this is still the best all around source for reliable, tasty meals. We make notes on the pages, recording dates we tried things, and ways we may have tweaked something. Now when I give a copy to anyone (I think I am on #10), I add my own notes of favorites. Recipes are not complicated, but sure to impress. From appetizers to desserts, you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars POCKET SIZE FUN
68 Fun Things to Do-- from Jones Beach to NBC Studio Tour, with the usual destinations as well. New York is so extraordinary that a lot of guidebooks try to be all too thorough. But really a short and sweet book can do the trick. If your young visitors are age seven and up, give them Melanie in Manhattan too, a novel about a New York girl. (Warning Melanie and her brother Matt the Brat have a favorite museum game called Point Out the Naked People. Their art teacher mom has no idea....)

Thanks to this book, we were able to figure out just the right bites of the big apple to take. We also were prepared for when we'd have to wait in line, and we saved big bucks through the author's tips on Broadway on a Budget. We used the author's fun facts to impress our kids. For example, if you were to look at every piece of art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it would take more than four years to see it all! We used several guidebooks. Editorial Review

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Taking this back to the library
I could barely read any of this book. The type is so tiny and hard to read, and the maps are all grey and difficult to read as well. Everything is just scrunched in there and you have to pore over that map to figure out what the heck you're looking at. They're way too busy. They cram too much detail into one map.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Lonely Planet Guide
I can very much reccomend this book to everyone planning to go to Hawaii. It has a section about every Hawaian Island open to travellers. You find general background information about the islands as well as very detailed information about things to do and see, lodging, dining and activities. It also picks out places that are usually less crowed than the major tourist accumulations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hawaii - know more than the guides!
I bought this for my parents. My mother read it before she went on her trip and ended up becoming an unofficial guide on some of their trips. She also had long informative conversations with the actual guides because of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good historical review.
This book has beautifull photographs. The book is much deeper than other Chicago architecture books because it has a well thought out historical review of the progression of Chicago architecture. Interesting even for the lay person like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars elegant and informative
This book provides an excellent introduction to Chicago's numerous schools of architecture over the years. It also provides a photographic tour of the city's important buildings, from the late 1800s to the present day.The photography is great!Highly recommended for fans of Chicago or architecture buffs in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better then the first edition!!!
I wrote this about the 1st edition : This is really a top notch book for the guys that like to get in a car and drive down the state highways - avoiding the interstates. "Eccentric" = don't be scared off buy that - this is not a book of weird stuff - just FUN stuff. This is one of those landmark travel books that comes out every now and then. The author really did the homework to get it all down in print. ==== Now all that has changed is that it is BETTER.We sell this book in our gift shop - it is the best seller. What I like about it is that the author does not make fun of her subjects like other wacky travel guides. Also the amount of details is really handy to the traveler who likes details.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Adventures
Eccentric America leapt off the book shelf and into my hand. Many uncontrollable chuckles and a few tears of laughter later, I exited the book shop with two copies. Within five merry, laughter-filled minutes the eleven year old son of a friend said, "Thanks, Tom," took a copy, and commenced planning his family's upcoming road trip to LA. We're all going adventuring together, thank you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift!
Whether you're traveling across America or just enjoy reading about the strange festivals and peoples across the US, this book would make a great coffee table/bathroom reading book! The map to eccentricity is fantastic, showing the spread of eccentricity isn't what you would necessarily stereotype (we're not all in California!)Anyone who wants to discover unusual facts about Americans and their odd celebrations will love this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cop Book Ever
I will keep this short: I have been a city cop for almost eighteen years and I defy anyone to find a better book about policework than this one. This is the closest you can come to knowing what being a cop is all about short of actually wearing a badge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the show... love thebook
My husband is a BIG fan of the TV show.We have every episode on DVD.This book was a great addition to his collection. He loved the book and could see how the award winning TV was based on it. It is different enough that he throughly enjoyed it.I am now reading it and am enjoying it too! It is not the same as the show, and is a great book on it's own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Paradise Found on a Grand canyon Tour
The Grand Canyon Handbook: an Insider's Guide to the Park, was quite helpful.I searched all over the internet for grand canyon tour information, and i must say paradisefoundtours.com was by far the best.I signed up for a grand canyon tour and a hoover dam tour with them. The book and the website went hand in hand.We had a great time!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just a big hole in the ground
The way the books of this series work is that they took a guide for new rangers in Yosemite with the 100 or so most frequently asked questions, and wrote their own answers for each park.So in each book the questions are very similar but the answers might be very different.5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just a big hole in the ground
