4-0 out of 5 stars Gave me the creeps..in a good way!
I was riveted to this book from the first page.Very visually appealing and written in a light-hearted way, it is a great guide for "ghost-chasers" and those who just love to see weird places.I also love how the authors never judge someone based on their personal testimony about places and events in the book and believe me, there are some wacked-out stories that you think just can't be true!I have only owned the book for a week and already have visited about 1/2 dozen of the places mentioned.I have even planned future weekend trips around some of the creepier areas in the book.Great fun!It is hard to tell where some of the things mentioned are at...specific directions are few and far between and that would be my only problem with the book. You won't be sorry you bought this book...it has something for everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sedona Overview
A quick and easy to follow introduction to everything Sedona. The quality of Sedona guidebooks is poor in general. This one stands out. Well worth the money.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sedona Book Review
Fine job, a comprehensive run down of the area highlights. The author did not make it clear that a Golden Eagle National Parks Pass can be used in place of a Red Rocks Pass.I unnecessarily purchased both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drive I-95 exit by exit
Book is excellent for driving I-95. Gives you excellent maps. Also shows you hotels for every exit on 95, where the police sit, and what radio stations come in for every state. we used it on the way to Disney World. I just wished it had Florida in it. Florida is not in the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Essential Guide to I-95
"We have spent the past eighteen months entrenched in this road: researching about it charting it, driving on it and then getting off 420 exits in 11 States - twice - once South and then again going North. The pleasure of meeting so many friendly helpful folk in all those towns has made this project a joy, and we discovered the delight of local regions and many layers of the country's history on I-95." ~Stan & Sandra

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite a ride!
This is more a "travel writing" book than an RV book, and very interesting reading. My only problem with it is that her writing style was rather jumpy - there might be several subjects and locations in one paragraph, and I often got lost as to where we were and what we were doing...Then it didn't seem to matter, I just enjoyed the ride.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Kick in the Pants!
I bought this book thinking "one day, when we retire, maybe we'll go." The author, "Charlie" as you'll get to know her, makes the trip real. All the details are given, with explanations of what to take, when to go, what to watch out for, and what to see while you're there. More importantly for us, however, was the underlying theme of the book...GO AND DO IT! "Charlie" points out repeatedly, "I did it, so can you." Use some common sense, but GO!

2-0 out of 5 stars No substance
It was like reading a Disney brochure- no real info. There were tidbits about each park, but nothing that would help us out. The Unofficial Guide to Disney World was much, much, much better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
If you are going to Walt Disney World Resort for the first time and want to keep some mystery until you actually ride the attractions, then this book may not be for you. Some of the descriptions for the various attractions go step-by-step through them, including plot points in 3D movies and so on. The book also leaves a lot out in other areas, such as dining (little coverage), getting around Walt Disney World, and off-site hotels and dining.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Primer On Disney World
My husband, son, and I just got back from Disney World a few weeks ago. We planned the trip in just a month's time, and WDW guides were very helpful!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, horrible book.
As someone very interested in urban exploration (especially in the subways) I wanted to check this book out upon hearing of it. After reading many of these Amazon reviews though, I opted out of a purchase, and took it out of my Bronx library instead. Thank goodness as I only wasted valuable time, and not any money.
2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
If the writing and adventures could match the inflated perceptions that the authors have of themselves, this would be a great read. Unfortunately, the writing is downright pedestrian and the urban adventures are either lackluster and/or poorly described. Also, the flow of each chapter is interruptedwith uninteresting asides and juvenile commentaries on a scattershot laundry list of topics.
1-0 out of 5 stars Well, there's four hours of my life I'll never get back.
This book was a tremendous disappointment. Many of the "missions" are laughably boring and/or carried out in a stunningly inept fashion, much of the writing is markedly narcissistic in its tone and yet inconsistent in content, and perhaps most disappointing the descriptions of the places where the authors go are remarkably poor.

5-0 out of 5 stars gripping, realistic, really Maine
Being wicked close to having been a Mainer all my life, I remember how murders back in the 1950s and 1960s held everyone's attention because we were a small state, way off in the northeast corner and relatively unpopulated. Mainers just didn't do each other in; get hammered on Saturday night and whack the heck out of each other, yes, but murder someone? Well, that was rare. 2-0 out of 5 stars A Boring Read - Could Barely Finish
I am a avid reader of true stories and have read many books in this genre over the years. This one was slow-moving and basically you knew who did it from the very eaerly pages. There was no mystery, just lots of dragging boring details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Amy
I just finished Finding Amy and I have to tell you - it was a great piece!I was reading two other books (about mobster Whitey Bulger) but had to put them down completely when I started Finding Amy.This book captured my attention and kept it right until the last page.It was pretty unique to read about colleagues in your profession - many who you know and have worked with - and to read about their dedication and tenacity to bring this killer to justice. The book was well written, informative, and told from a cop's point of view - all the while reliving the story as it happened.Congratulations on your endeavor - your hard work certainly paid off!Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Testamonial to Colorado, Moments in Time
After purchasing a recent copy of Colorado, Moments in Time, I feel compelled to give credit where credit is surely due.I was taken back by photograher Grant Collier's 'eye'.Grant takes photographs like I wish I could.Every photo is exquisite in it's own way.I am not a writer, so I do not feel that I can do justice to Grant Collier's work in text.I will not compare this work to other famous Colorado photographers because it would not be fair to them.In my oppinion, Grant Collier is simply the best.I have purchased other works of Grant Collier and am equally impressed with them.I strongly feel that Grant Collier is a name to watch as a rising star.Buy the books.Catch him while you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly showcases the photography skills of Grant Collier
Colorado: Moments In Time superbly showcases the photography skills of Grant Collier in the form of more than 160 full-color images of Colorado's visually impressive wilderness areas. A very small amount of descriptive text embellishes these captivating snapshots of the Colorado wilderness' unfettered splendor, from a close-up of the state flower in full blossom to the rugged falls along the Elk River. Colorado: Moments In Time is a treasure for anyone who appreciates and cherishes natural beauty, and highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Binding Fell Apart
I noticed the review that said this book was worthy of "permanent display on your coffee table."Well, I don't think that will be possible with my book, as the binding fell apart after 6 months. The book has gotten a fair amount of use, but nothing out of the ordinary.I've since seen a similar problem with a couple of the display copies at bookstores (which is why they've been demoted to display copies). So I don't think this is an isolated problem. It seems like the book is so big that they didn't make a strong enough binding for it.So just a warning for this thinking of buying this book. The good news is that, on the advice of one of the reviews, I bought Colorado: Yesterday & Today to replace my copy of Colorado: 1870-2000.I agree that it is the better book and now it will be on permanent display on my coffe-table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of permanent display on a coffee table
This book is excellent in look, feel, and quality. It is intriguing to see how much landscape has changed in 130 years. Many times for the better and many times for the worse. In every case it is very interesting to see two pictures side by side and compare 1870 with 2000.The photographer was very meticulous to capture every shot as closely as possible to the original perspective and frame, which really enhances the "then and now" feel of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearing Up the Confusion and Getting the Photo Details
There appears to be some confusion as all of the reviews of the original "Colorado 1870-2000" big book are credited to this, the paperback "Colorado 1870-2000 Revisited: The History Behind the Images".This book is a companion book to the original. It takes each photo set from the big book and goes into detail about the location, changes, and how Fielder acquired each photo. These are the things that, being left out of the original, made several people give the big book negative reviews. While it would have been nice (and certainly less expensive) to have everything in one volume, we now have the information for which those disappointed with the big book were looking. While the big book is a piece of coffee table art, the Revisited book fits neatly on your bookshelf, ready to be taken down to answer those questions posed by your friends perusing the big book.I take a bit of offense at having to have paid for two different books, but they belong together and I feel were money well spent; the big book for the beautiful photos and the revisited book for its entertaining and educational material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Only the best will do
This is a replacement purchase.Since my first purchase in 1993, I have used this publication extensively. It is accurate and complete.Nothing else needs to be said.Pay attention to the place names on each page.Quite a few aren't listed in the index because they are the historical names and are no longer populated. These are Texas 'ghost towns' and most have no buildings but most do have cemeteries/graves.
2-0 out of 5 stars Roads of Texas--the Mapsco edition

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and important contribution to American architectural, city planning, and urban studies
The oversized, oblong shape of this lovely title will challenge library shelves but lends to display: perfect for the panoramic scenes of American skylines which is the focus of Skylines: American Cities Yesterday And Today. The world's first skyscraper in Chicago was finished in 1885, but skyscrapers have graced almost every large American city since. This celebration provides modern photos of almost fifty such skyscrapers, adding more from around the world and providing historical photos and maps for each city. Personal travel and research combined with these original shots makes Skylines a unique and important contribution to American architectural, city planning, and urban studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dazzling Skylines
Finally a quality photography book on the skylines.I have been waiting on a book like this for some time. This book is very well done, most of the photographs are vivid and just jump off the page. The photographs of Atlanta and Honolulu are especially well done, it seems like you can see forever. The only real qualm I have with this book is that the pictures of the skylines are not consistant, some are up close, some are more current, and some are taken at night. The two skylines I am most familiar with, Houston and Dallas, are represented with daylight photos, that I am appreciative of, but the photo's are too close, both cities have great skylines that stretch out from the city center and give a breathtaking vista, which unfortunitely was not represented. If they had been photographed in the same way as Atlanta I would have been thrilled.I would have liked the creators of this book to have taken all the pictures the same way, in the daylight, high above, and on clear, crisp days. This is a nice book, but it could have been great, I would have been so pleased if all the pictures where as well done and aweinspiring as the pics of Honolulu and Atlanta, now that would have been a five star book and then some.Having said all of this, I do recommend this book to anyone with an interest in architecture and arial photography, you won't be totally disappointed, you'll just be left like me, a bit sad, thinking it could have been better. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great alongside travel guides
Used this map on our last two trips and found it to be a useful tool alongside our travel guides. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the map can be somewhat "busy." You probably could tour the island alone with the map, but a good guide like 'Maui - Mile by Mile' is perfect with this map.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great writing!
This book was a good choice to read after recently finishing "Crazy in the Cockpit." I confess I skipped/skimmed through the more technical aviation-related sections, concentrating on the travel narrative aspect. Makes for good bedside reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a way to go!
I loved William Least Heat Moon's "Blue Highways" describing his travels on the back roads of America. Now Mariana Gosnell has done an aerial version of it and has done it equally well.I had two childhood dreams.I'll never be a cowboy but, even at my advanced age, I can be a pilot.Until then, please take me with you on your next odyssey Mariana

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful yarn about flying across the United States
The Luscombe isn't my favorite lightplane, but it is Gosnell's, and she writes about it with such affection that I'd like to fly one. The trip evidently takes place in the late 1970s, because Jimmy Carter is president. (She visits Plains GA and the largest peanut-butter factory in the world.) Gosnell is a journalist, so she goes out of her way to visit unlikely places and meet interesting people. (Among them is the crew of the man-powered Gossamer Condor, whose record-breaking flight she is on hand to document.) I feel sorry for the lad who quit reading on page 10. He missed a wonderful yarn, and one that deserves a place on the bookshelf of any lightplane pilot. -- Dan Ford ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
We try to visit DC every couple of years, and next time we were thinking of paying for one of those guided city tours. We don't need the sites pointed out to us, but those tour guides always seem to have good information and anecdotes about the sites that you don't hear anywhere else. I thought that maybe we could save a couple hundred dollars if we could find a book that has that type of information.I bought the Unofficial Guide to Washington, D.C., and I also checked out the Frommer's Guide. They were very informative, but they didn't get me excited about any of the sites. They were pretty much just reference books (with very limited photos). However, when I opened up the Eyewitness Travel book, I was blown away. The color photos and color floor plans/cutaways of the buildings are outstanding. It really got me interested in places that I wouldn't have thought twice about if I had read just a text description.
2-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but very PC
I am planning a trip to Washington, DC, in September 2006.In order to prepare for my trip and gain insight on the many attractions in the nation's capital, I purchased the "Eyewitness Travel: Washington, DC" guide from Amazon.com in the month prior to my trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great places and finds
We used the 2006 book to find our way around Phoenix, and it was very helpful. I didn't use the maps (pretty good one from Hertz), but the listing of things to do, places to eat, and shopping really helped. Their "finds" came through like a charm with the Blue Adobe Grill in Mesa- a must try!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide to AZ
Being a winter visitor in AZ for over 5 years now, we have found the 2001 Frommer's to be a great guide for celebrations, day trips, and travelling in general.Explanations are great for each landmark, with phone #'s to make reservations and check open times. I always do that because businesses do change their hours seasonally, and from year to year.I an ordering a 2006 Frommer's AZ soon.pmd ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BIG BIG BIG BIG fan of the movies :)
I love Disney world and I love love The Pirates Of The Carribbean! Great if you like both!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read for Disneyland fans
I really enjoed the first chapter on how the concept translated into the final product of a ride. Amazing how these things come together. The second chapter comparing the ride throughs between the four parks I found a bit frustrating - hard to really picture it unless you're there (for me). I was more interested in the ride portion than the movie chapter myself. Worth the buy (though I bought it used).

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous read
I greatly enjoyed this book. It gives a comprehensive history of the attraction at all the Disney parks, starting, of course, with Disneyland. From the early idea of a walk-through wax museum to the full-blown attraction we know today, the book gives an interesting historical look at the process of Imagineering and how it came about for this particular attraction. The info on the development of the first movie is the icing on the cake. (Note that this book pre-dates the "Dead Man's Chest" movie and the 2006 updates to the attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, so it does not discuss those things.) ... Read more
